It didn't say that they had to remain in existence. ;) (This winking smily looks like he's got something in his eye, but it's all I have.)

Depends a bit on how loose your definition of "band" is, and if there is wiggle room in the timing.

    Peter Gabriel
    Jesse Cook
    California Guitar Trio
Talking Heads (wiggle room time - they did overlap with PJ in 1991!)

They did overlap, slightly, but they started in 1975. That's a hell of a lot of wiggle! ;)

Here's a top 10. I'll classify them as rock/pop, bands/solo musicians who have sprung up since 1984. I mostly like older music and other genres so it's hard for me. Some of these I still follow, some I left behind though they made a big impact. All but two are still active. Born in '77, for reference.
    Beck
    Pixies
    Jack White/White Stripes
    Phish
    Jane's Addiction
    Nirvana
    Morphine
    Modest Mouse
    My Morning Jacket
    Built to Spill

I just watched REM's 2 hour Bio on Palladia. What a great band they have been. In my top 5 of all time.

If Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds counts, they're way at the top for me.
