Karen Mallard, Virginia congress candidate cuts down barrel of an “assault rifle”, inadvertently committing a felony in the process.  She illegally manufactured a SBR (short barreled rifle) live on Facebook, lol.  Last I checked, she has 23k comments on the video from people saying that they are reporting her to the ATF and now has a 1 star rating on her facebook page.  This whole thing is stupidly ironic!!!
    Here is her Facebook page:

oh sure, now you're for restrictions on guns?
This restriction has been in place for quite sometime.  I do feel we should enforce laws already on the books and Mrs. Mallard could be used as a great example...otherwise she is going to set president for others that try to do the same thing...
    existing restrictions = good
    new restrictions = bad

    is that it?

    also, *precedent*

Let’s see if the one she violated actually gets prosecution, then I’ll answer your question.  Do you think she should be prosecuted for manufacturing an illegal firearm or not?  And why?  I feel politicians should be held just as accountable for illegal actions as us lowly commoners.
Btw, the law she broke states nothing about intent...Go look for yourself!and why are you attacking me?  She is the one that broke the law and recorded it on Facebook...This is the idiot thread and she is an idiot.

    You're being disingenuous.

This is more "liberals don't understand guns so they shouldn't have any authority over gun laws" narrative.

Meanwhile you don't know the difference between president and precedent.

Well that particular liberal shouldn’t.  She is a prime example of why it is important to know what you are doing and talking about...And I’m being honest, do you think that she shouldn’t be held accountable for her felony the same way any other citizen would?  She committed a MAJOR gun crime and you don’t seem to care.  Your lack of acknowledgement also sets a precedent.
Here is an article on the story that cites the law: http://www.13newsnow.com/mobile/article/news/local/mycity/virginia-beach/atf-investigating-after-congressional-candidate-cut-apart-ar-15/291-526898428

President is Trump, Precedent is a model/example.  Here’s one you may look up- “Petty”...Does it really bother you that much that I made a typo?  Edit: nevermind...

I’m not sure that the two even compare, but I probably would have fired this guy instead of suspending...You tell me, which is worse, manufacturing an illegal firearm and recording yourself doing it on Facebook or a racist teacher?  Both are bad, one is a felony, one is blatant racism...
But the fact that you are using a “whataboutism” to defend the felon is telling of your hipocracy and partisanship...Or is it just that conservatives cannot use “whataboutisms”?  I get lost in the rules...

She definitely committed a federal offense, a la Randy Weaver, and I would hope at the very least the BATFE pays her a visit. I know she says she rendered the firearm inoperable and then turned it in to the police, so clearly she wasn't trying to manufacture a short barrel, but the law is the law.

I asked a question. I didn’t defend either. Nice projection on your part and painting with a broad brush. Care to answer the question? Be honest.

Exactly, funny thing is that she didn’t even render it inoperable in the video.  It would still fire, just single shot since she cut the gas block (easy $40 fix).  But you are right, and this is exactly the same law violated that caused the Ruby Ridge fiasco.  She should definitely be visited by the BATFE.  What kind of messages does it send out if she is not held accountable here.  Thousands of people have already reported her, so it will be interesting how this plays out.

Had she continued cutting the gun up to render it in operable, would she still be a felon? And why should she be charged when she turned the gun into the police and took it out of circulation? It’s not like she challenged ATF to come take it from her.

Because the law says nothing about intent and is very specific about how to properly destroy a firearm.  Regardless of her intent and what she did afterwards, she literally manufactured an illegal firearm...on video!!!  It would be similar to someone making meth and giving it to the police afterwards.  They would still get charged with manufacturing meth.
This is why it is important for our lawmakers and gun owners alike to know the laws.  What if others saw this video and thought this was an appropriate way of destroying an ar-15 and started doing the same thing?

I know she says she rendered the firearm inoperable and then turned it in to the police, so clearly she wasn't trying to manufacture a short barrel, but the law is the law.
Had she continued cutting the gun up to render it in operable, would she still be a felon? And why should she be charged when she turned the gun into the police and took it out of circulation? It’s not like she challenged ATF to come take it from her.
If you manufacture meth but decide afterward to turn it into the police have you still committed a crime? I'm not advocating for locking her up or anything, but people can't go around committing federal firearms offenses and expect no repercussions. I'd be fine with a slap on the hand and a warning. This woman in VA sawed off the barrel of a firearm. As soon as she did that, she committed a felony.

    Here is her Facebook page:
    https://www.facebook.com/KarenMallardForVA/
oh sure, now you're for restrictions on guns?
This restriction has been in place for quite sometime.  I do feel we should enforce laws already on the books and Mrs. Mallard could be used as a great example...otherwise she is going to set president for others that try to do the same thing...
I love when people set presidents.

    (sorry, dude, couldn't resist).

Team Trump Treason’s Justice Department is waiting for direction from the NRA.
Then she is fucked because I bet they would both support giving her the maximum penalty, sentencing her to 10 years behind bars.

Can you link to the law? Or let me know what google terminology to use to find the law you cite? I like going to source material.

Here is a good start:  Scroll down to the “ Short Barreled Rifle” section:

cop out, but Wikipedia covers and cites this pretty well:

Ha, don't lump me into that. I fucking hate the NRA. I was a member decades ago when it appeared that they were dedicated to protecting the 2nd Amendment and focused on firearms safety training. But at this point they only exist to lobby for the firearms industry. I have given neither money nor support to those assholes for years. I own a couple of shotguns, a couple of rifles and a handgun. I used to shoot regularly. I don't shoot anymore. The only reason I hold onto a few of my guns is that they were passed down to me. But I haven't purchased a firearm for a couple of decades, and have no plans to ever do so again. I'm guessing I support the same reforms you do to gun laws. I live in a state where we closed the gun-show loophole, and require FFL transfers even for private sales. I supported that. I want much more thorough background checks. I would like to see mandatory training prior to ownership. I'd be fine with registration.

there's a video that went viral of a guy who decided after Parkland to destroy his AR15. he cut it in half. was that illegal? or is it only illegal if the gun is still in workable condition?

I’ll try to post a link to the requirements for destroying them later, but you actually have to cut the receiver in half with a blowtorch, not just shorten the barrel like she did.

With you on all that plus adequate funding to adequately enforce existing laws. The straw purchasers and private sales are a big part of the problem.

She definitely committed a federal offense, a la Randy Weaver, and I would hope at the very least the BATFE pays her a visit. I know she says she rendered the firearm inoperable and then turned it in to the police, so clearly she wasn't trying to manufacture a short barrel, but the law is the law.
I find it interesting that the pro gun crowd constantly harps on “enforcing existing gun laws” but seemingly has no problem with the NRA and gun manufacturers actively lobbying against ATF budgets that help do just that.
You also seem to have no problems with a Democrat breaking firearm laws...interesting indeed.
there's a video that went viral of a guy who decided after Parkland to destroy his AR15. he cut it in half. was that illegal? or is it only illegal if the gun is still in workable condition?
I’ll try to post a link to the requirements for destroying them later, but you actually have to cut the receiver in half with a blowtorch, not just shorten the barrel like she did.
he cut it in half with a circular saw I think.

If he cut the actual upper and lower receiver in half, he is probably good and at least did not commit a felony.

Common sense is gone if anyone thinks this woman should be penalized for destroying that gun. Idiot thread indeed.

Well, maybe if she had destroyed it before turning it into an SBR.  All she did in the video was turn it into an illegal firearm, not destroy it.

"I knew exactly what I was doing. The gun was inoperable before I cut it. And we took it completely apart. And we didn't put all that on video because I wanted to get the message to the students that I was standing with them," said Mallard.

Virginia Beach Police confirmed Thursday afternoon the gun was in their possession and waiting to be picked up by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Seriously, common sense. This is a dumb story.

Well, I would agree in general and on the surface. But what you're saying is that it is OK to commit a crime as long as your intentions are good. That isn't how the rule of law works. She could have gone about this differently. She could have truly rendered the firearm inoperable to start with, and there would have been no issue. She could have ignorantly committed the federal offense privately, and taken the pieces to law enforcement, and it would be a non-issue. But she decided to publicly commit the crime and document it on video. If she'd simply cut the firearm in half this would be a non-issue. But she cut the barrel off. Anyone with a vague notion about gun laws knows that is a no-no. If she owned a firearm and was ignorant of one of the most basic laws, that is on her and she probably never should have possessed it. She may have cut the barrel off, and then proceeded to cut it into smaller pieces, but she still shortened the barrel of a functional firearm. Cut it in half first, and then cut those halves into smaller pieces. It may seem like a minor point, but again, publicly violating a well-known federal firearms law puts you in Trump-stupid territory.
