I don't feel like you have to like every PJ song out the but this song is incredible. I remember the first time I listened to it and hearing Mike go into the solo. For some reason I was so caught off gaurd by it. It was one of the most beautiful surprises I have ever heard.
Boring, generic, lame, unimaginative...the worst song on Pearl Jam's worst album. It's not even worthy of being a Bon Jovi song.
They should have included another Matt Cameron song instead...to give the album some merit, and to piss off Message Pit members with bad taste in music.

I agree with every word of this. though I don't think the latest album is their worst. I think it's better than Riot Act. but everything else you said: generic, lame, bon jovi, etc, are my exact sentiments about Come Back. an adult contemporary song that I never listen to.

Wait, I was going to be really sarcastic for a moment there, but I guess I won't... hehe... he.
Ahh, so much of this is so silly. On one hand, I kind of enjoy the debate... it's interesting to hear different opinions, even if they're one-sided and ignorant, maybe the important thing is to listen to what someone else has to offer (even if it's essentially a pointless discussion that cannot be "won or lost", like so many other discussions...). I think what people forget with many aspects of life is that of subjectivity. I mean, I agree, Matt Cameron tunes in particular are more complex, with unique and creative chord changes and everything else. And it just so happens that I really love his writing style (Soundgarden songs like Applebite and pretty well everything he did or co-wrote with McBain for Wellwater Conspiracy). But saying that a song is shitty simply because it's lacking some of those [although i'd have to say, GOD-LIKE] characteristics, I think is a stupid argument. Sometimes in music less is more... not really because of anything you can pinpoint (well, YOU can, but it's going to affect the next person differently is my point). I'm sure we can all relate to liking a song, or a band, who's music is very simple but effective. Simple, repetitive garbage generally doesn't do it for me, but the likes of Pixies or Nirvana, I do appreciate. I guess what I'm saying, is, IT'S ALL FUCKING SUBJECTIVE. Don't insult someone else's intelligence because they think Come Back is a great tune... everyone's brains are wired slightly differently, innately. And on top of that, your prior experience or knowledge of music will have effected the development or certain portions of the brain, and thus how one hears music is affected. Sorry, just babbling on. However, having said that, I will pretty much side with hippiemom with what she said... actually on a regular basis, I find myself judging or measuring people based what kind of art/music they are interested in (if any), or whether they have developed any sort of appreciation for pets and/or animals in general.
So what I am saying? If I said that I'd really really liked Come Back (which I don't so much), there's no way anyone could prove me wrong, 'cause guess what? They're not me! But yeah, it's not a pile of turd, but it is sort of an oddball... if I had my say, I would have made damn sure it wound up as a b-side. However, having not had any say [frick the english language is weird...] in anything the band has done, i'd say things have progressed fairly fuckin' nicely overall. For every questionable tune, there's several that I quite enjoy (ahh the positive side).

I really like it when people here get angry at others for not liking a song or an album. I personally love the song and disagree with you but i'm not mad that you hate it and i'm not about to call you stupid.

That's where I'm at too. I think it's funny that the OP doesn't like it and has strong feelings about not liking it, but it's no different to my hatred of Last Kiss. I don't think people are dumb for liking it or not liking it, just exercising their right to choose and express their individuality. Thank goodness we're all different! What a bland old world if we weren't?

Are you joking? Seriously, is this just a troll? Yeah, it's a simple song, and I can see how some people could almost interpret it as cheesy, but come on....it's a classic PJ ballad. Perfectly crafted. Ed sounds great. The mood is totally achieved.
Gone or Army Reserve...now those could be in the running for worst in the catalog for my money.

When I read the original post I sort of thought the person was joking. To each his own but let me just say Come Back is the song I skip TO, not past. I also consider it a highlight of any of the boots that it's featured on. As songs go, I most love those that build and build to a really powerful finale and this one is a GREAT example of that.
I personally like come back a lot, also because I can def. relate to the words and the general state of emotion that is being expressed. However, I can also see how others think it is rather cheesy.... nothing wrong with that.

Sleight of Hand??? Sleight of Hand?!?!?!?!?!? Man oh man. It may be a bathroom song when you are listening to it on the album, but live it kills.
Comeback isnt amazing or highly original, but its far from the worst song, and anybody who denies Riot Act is their worst album may be delusional
I guess Im in the minority when it comes to sleight of hand. I just never liked it and have seen it live many times, including storytellers where I was kinda bummed they picked that one to play.
Not one of my favorites- and my least favorite song on Avocado. I did enjoy it live in Albany, but I just find the album version boring (and very unlike Black).
But to each his own. Its funny how passionate fans of the same band can feel so differently about their song catalog. Sleight of Hand is one of my favorites and I can't imagine that being someones bathroom break, but so what if it is I guess.

Seriously now, I go to the loo before the show starts AND I don't move from my seat once PJ takes the stage! So even if they play LAST KISS, which I simply cannot stand, I still stay there until the boys have left the building!
And if I gotta go to the loo I just hold it! (wish I could learn to pee in a cup like a bloke! ) I don't get why anyone would leave the auditorium short of a fire. But yeah, if you don't like something, perfect time for the dunny!

Just like my other two fav. bands ('cept for Pink Floyd who obviously are no longer/no longer touring), Radiohead and Tool, Pearl Jam take their songs to a whole other level when played live. Everyone here must know that they play each song a bit differently each night - some songs especially. A song like Animal can be a bit more, or a bit less rockin' or tight. To me, Nothing As It Seems, thanks to Mike (but also Matt), is/was always given unique flavour each time they play(ed) it. I've heard from a lot of people who didn't like Tool's new album nearly as much who appreciated the new songs much much more after having seem them peformed live. To take a piss during songs like Sleight of Hand (so fawkin' awesome), I think you're missing out... sorta jumping to conlusions. If you're taking a piss often, that means you're drinking too much booze. If that's what it takes to make a musical performance better for you, then so be it. In reality, the more you drink, the less of the music your brain is actually able to perceive or process. It's good to be in a relaxed state, but I so often seen people blasted out of their skulls at shows who spend more time screaming "Eddie!" or "Maynard!" like a total fucking fool, missing out on the music or what they're saying between songs... mostly just overwhelmed by the fact that they're there ("it's fucking PEARL JAM man!"), and not really making the most out of the MOMENT. I'm blathering on again; to each their own, and all that stuff.
I find that most of my favourite songs or albums were not my favourite the first even several listens. I mean, if something simply doesn't move you, than that's that. But I guess what I'm advocating here is, try to have a greater attention span, and being pissed drunk can sometimes be a deterrent.
