Cannot believe what I saw in Seattle today

I drove around the city today and must've seen 20-30 tents & cardboard boxes, maybe more, with homeless people underneath bridges, highways, viaducts, etc.
What type of country that creates mass industries, wealthy elitists and enough income to go around for all allows this to happen?
One major reason-
The complete and utter discrimination against ready & willing workers who have missed job opportunities because of any issue deemed a red flag in hiring process.
It's slowly becoming a imperialist state.

...Did they all have their resumes handy or something?

For some reason, I think drugs, addiction, mental disorders, and physical abuse might be stronger factors.

no they weren't homeless in the sense that they had nothing as in no tents, clothes, like people you see on the street corners begging or so warped out of their minds from addiction...
it was a growing group of people more so than I'd seen in the last few years re: homeless camps or "tent cities"

I understand - but I think the point made is a reasonable one.

That view doesn't reflect a lack of sympathy / empathy, just acknowledging that these elements are just as viable causes. And then it ripples out - what caused each element, could it have been prevented or alleviated, etc.

Poverty is everywhere in the world. Sad, yes, but unique to Seattle, certainly not. Also, I believe Seattle has the highest minimum wage in America, so prettymuch any job the homeless people you speak of may get would be a good start.

"A mile away live the rich folk and see how they are living it up,why the poor they eat from hand to mouth ,the rich drink it from a silver cup and it just makes me wonder , why so many lose and so few win ".???

Probably a crappy band but a line from a great song POISON-SOMETHING TO BELIEVE IN.

Give it a listen if you haven't to date.

One thing this life has taught is "everybody has a story".It's the same here in Australia ,a lot of homeless, some are there by choice and some circumstance, whatever reason,it's a heartbreaker,

I went to Seattle for the last show of the tour last year. First time there. I was freezing. On my way back to the hotel I thought I was in a bad part of town. Saw a bunch of people huddled near a building. I felt so bad because it was so cold out (I'm from Florida). Then I realized it was kids sleeping out for Nike shoes.

Your avatar and comments / insight conflict in a wonderful way.

pljam, sure there's a background to each of us. It's not necessarily (always) about rich or poor though, and I don't demonize either. ALL are people.

Yeah, I'm sure none of those people are drug addicts or boozers. Some people created those issues for themselves.

There are tons of homeless people in Seattle, Vancouver... and all.down the west coast. This is because of the mild winters. It's just too cold during the winter months everywhere else in North America outside of the southern states, so the homeless tend to migrate to these cities. The west coast cities should do a better job of acknowledging this fact and do more to help these people (the majority of whom are mentally ill - about 65% of them, supposedly).

I wish I could remember the statistic, but a large percentage of homeless people in the US are veterans.

I saw it in every city I went to last year on the West Coast tour. Portland stood out with the homeless people under the bridge next to the arena.

Seattle is very "transient/homeless" friendly city. They let them set up their shanties. Go to the town hall at 5am before the cops wake up the homeless. They are everywhere on the lawn.

Again, Seattle is very giving to the needy. That city does a lot for them.

Whether drugs, alchohol, or mental illness, I feel terrible for them. However, can we stop being wealthists. No group is hated more by its non members than the wealthy.

Gonna get worse and worse as more jobs are phased out by robots. How many jobs do ya think have been lost due to self-checkouts at grocery stores?

Wealthists? Is this a new term now?

Someone wants to "hate" me and mine because we've worked our asses off for what we've earned? (while looking out for others too, not that it even needs justification)

Ok then. Can't change their minds, and not inclined to give credence to that limited mindset.
