And Hedo - I wasn't accusing you specifically of attacking Hank. Just making a generalized, meaningless statement ;) If you've ever attacked someone personally on this board, I haven't noticed.

    Thank ya :)

    Hedonist,

Seems like a circle (triangle?) of respect - which is great (by this I mean I feel the same way about your posts)! Seems we always end up in great and fascinating discussions together.

First of all - the fact that we can afford computers (or computer access, as well as the time) to write on a rock band's message board defines us all as far more privileged than most in the world. As far as indoctrination goes - I think every single being capable of critical thought is indoctrinated in some way, shape, or form by those around us (parents, education systems, society, the media as a few examples). I should have been more clear and less rude about it, but I'm no less privileged or indoctrinated than you or anyone else here. As for the way I expressed myself - my sincerest apologies for my tone and blanket statement - it was pretentious and honestly, pretty douchey and insensitive of me.

As for your second statement about multiple issues - that's something I can get behind wholeheartedly, and as usual, I'm happy to be proven wrong in an opinion here. If you're causing no harm then you're alright with me (as Ben Harper says about my favourite illicit drug, but it applies here too). We do have the energy to support multiple causes, and I've openly suggested that pigeon-holing yourself in one cause doesn't happen here and how great that is, so it really was hypocritical of me to speak so heavy-handedly there.

So, my humble apologies, and I hope that we can keep this mutual respect going. Thanks for calling me out on this - it's always a good reminder that you just can't know everything.

And thank YOU. Class act, sir.

Hank... why are you deliberately antagonizing people?

Your posts are rude and insulting and have no place here.

If you want a political debate follow the forum rules and take it to the moving train board. This is not the right forum.

rude and insulting hardly, only if you allow yourself to be insulted, what are we 4 years old "sticks and stones will break my bones and names will never hurt me" apparently someone missed the memo, as free thinkers which I hope we all are, you should be able to rise above it because there is far more important stuff going on in life than worrying about someone's OPINION, yes it is just my opinion (which I am entitled to, thank you) on an internet message board, but thanks so much for your concern
But this place IS about words. They have value, as much as the people and thoughts that propel them to this medium. How else do you get your opinions across here? How have you reacted to those with a different perspective than you in the past? I've seen them dismissed by you and others as "being negative".

    Hmmm.

I'm not insulted, actually. I'm more flummoxed by the inability to re-think an approach to presenting a view.

Cheers again to the OP. Your intent and action are appreciated.
I love this new word I learned from hedonist- flummoxed! Smart one she is!

that's what i said. she was kinda surprised at my call. i told her i found out about the flags in a internets debate. told her the OP attended a straight up rock n roll show & stayed nearby your building, he was bothered by the torn/tattered flags. he wants them replaced. "nope", i said, "they have character," "leave the flags alone," i said. she was thoroughly impressed & truly amazed.

"Hi, Detroit Free Press? This is hedonist, another internet person! I found out about the flags on an internet debate. You received a call and may or may not receive future calls about this from a certain 'chadwick', also from the internet. Please send him the tattered flags on my behalf. Not that he needs more character - dude's got plenty - but I think he'd enjoy them immensely."

She was thoroughly impressed and truly amazed.

Certainly a lot of opinions on what I originally posted. A couple points I feel are worth noting is that my attempt to speak to someone in person at the Detroit Free Press and thus being escorted out, as well as the post here was done out of respect, nothing more and nothing less. My respect is for a symbol, a symbol of our country and all it's great people. I believe the American flag represents the people foremost, not political agendas, or corporations. It was created to empower and inspire it's citizens. The American citizen is a very special animal in this world, capable of doing amazing things. I have seen first hand what the best of us and worst and us can do in a single moment.

I'm from Massachusetts. I have lived in the Boston area my entire life. I'm a big sports fan and have always loved the city's big events. My birthday is April 19th and is always celebrated in the same week with the Boston Marathon. Usually I take Marathon Monday off and go party somewhere along the route with friends and family.

I will never forget what I saw on the 15th, 2013. What heroism shined brightly in the face of true evil! That's what that flag represents to me.

No, it's not okay with me to see a torn and tattered rag of a flag.

And the Detroit Free Press building was at the starting line to that city's weekend marathon.
