In any case, Callen, I'm not sure what you were implying in your sentence: can't control others as in physically incapable of doing so, or shouldn't?
Romeo Dallaire suggested it was our moral responsibility to assist in such travesties because- simply put- we could. We have been fortunate to have been born on a place on the earth where we enjoy an outstanding life. It would be callous and cold-hearted to ignore the pleas of those in need.
Look at some rich and/or militarily strong neighbours in IS's predominant playground: Turkey, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Iran, UAE not too far away.
The only common link I can think of between the Rwandan Genocide and the situation in the Middle East is that people are dying unnecessarily. Am I missing some other commonalities?
This is critical: having the means to solve a problem locally should factor into the decision for non-regional powers to provide assistance. That's why I'd agree with Romeo Dallaire in the case of the Rwandan Genocide, and would say that his statement does not hold true (not unequivocally, at least) with regards to the handling of IS.0 -

I don't know if this has been brought up but now the headline on CNN is that Isis is holding 262 Christians hostage. Why not just say 262 hostages? Are they trying to appeal to the christian nation that is the US to drum up support for military action? To me it is irrelevant that they are Christians. They are holding hostages. People. These ever loving religions are destroying this world.0

It's not a random selection of hostages. If it were all boyscouts or Jews or Christians or Metallica roadies, it makes sense to refer to that select group in a news report.Be Excellent To Each OtherParty On, Dudes!0

I'm glad he's coming to visit. Between public condemnation of settlement constructions, and a refusal to allow Israel to govern the conversation about Iran's nuclear capabilities, America has finally shown Israeli leadership that they do, in fact, answer to someone.mickeyrat said:isnt it just GREAT Bibi is coming to visit next week?
Netanyahu clearly was expecting the invitation to speak with Republicans would also get him into the White House doors to discuss with Obama, and the refusal from the White House was clearly a slap in the face. Netanyahu will look nothing but desperate and pathetic (at best) in this visit. Which is great. Worst case scenario, Israelis start to see Netanyahu as the destroyer of the bipartisan relationship between the US and Israel, and maybe speak with their votes this coming month. Maybe the next Prime Minister of the country won't be a monster.'05 - TO, '06 - TO 1, '08 - NYC 1 & 2, '09 - TO, Chi 1 & 2, '10 - Buffalo, NYC 1 & 2, '11 - TO 1 & 2, Hamilton, '13 - Buffalo, Brooklyn 1 & 2, '15 - Global Citizen, '16 - TO 1 & 2, Chi 2
