I read the other day that those who use a gun for protection in their home are far more likely to have that gun used against them during a burglary (or whatever) than they are to successfully protect themselves.

I absolutely believe that. Think about domestic violence. My cousin a retired cop, told me one time he was thankful handguns were restricted heavily in Canada ... some of those domestic violence calls are scary.
