Police: Toddler fatally shot woman during work video call
Today
ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. (AP) — A toddler found an unsecured, loaded handgun inside an apartment and fatally shot a woman while she was on a work-related video call, police in central Florida said.
According to news outlets, the woman was the mother of the toddler who shot her in the head Wednesday.
Someone on the video call dialed 911 after seeing the toddler in the background and hearing a noise, Altamonte Springs police said in a news release Thursday. The woman, identified as 21-year-old Shamaya Lynn, fell backward and never returned to the video call, the person reported.
“Officers and paramedics did their best in rendering aid to Mrs. Lynn, but she was found with a fatal gunshot wound to the head,” police stated.
An adult in the apartment left the firearm unsecured, police said. Investigators were working with the Seminole County State Attorney’s Office to determine whether charges will be filed.
“To determine whether charges will be filed.” Responsibility at its finest.
That is a law in Florida too. It should be upheld.
Saw this today in my FB feed from one of the local yokels from my hometown. Donate to Toys for Kids, win an AR-15. Why not just give the guns to the kids?
Because the rifles aren’t going to kids. Looks like someone donated guns to a fund raiser to raise money for kids. Must be legally allowed to own a gun to buy a ticket. Ticket proceeds go to children. The kids have nothing to do with the guns. A little un-PC I agree, but a far stretch to say may as well just give the guns to the children.
Back the Blue, Tejas style. More guns is the answer. ‘Murica and it’s freedumbs. Woot!
The number of shootings in Texas, not including suicides, increased 14% this year with roughly 3,200 shootings compared to the same period in 2020, which recorded roughly 2,800 shootings, according to data compiled by the Gun Violence Archive (GVA). Gun violence incidents this year represent a 50% increase over the same period in 2019, which saw 2,100 shootings, the data shows.
Allowing anyone who is legally able to own a pistol to open carry it without any training? What could go wrong? Indiana tried passing this law earlier this year, but thankfully it was voted down in the State Senate.
Last night at midnight, a new law went into effect in Texas. House Bill 1927 permits people to carry handguns without a permit, unless they have been convicted of a felony or domestic violence. This measure was not popular in the state. Fifty-nine percent of Texans—including law enforcement officers—opposed it. But 56% of Republicans supported it. “I don’t know what it’s a solution to,” James McLaughlin, executive director of the Texas Police Chiefs Association, said to Heidi Pérez-Moreno of the Texas Tribune when Republican governor Greg Abbott signed the bill in mid-August. “I don’t know what the problem was to start with.”
Texas Gun Rights executive director Chris McNutt had a different view. He said in a statement: “Texas is finally a pro-gun state despite years of foot-dragging, roadblocks, and excuses from the spineless political class.”
The bill had failed in 2019 after McNutt showed up at the home of the Texas House Speaker, Republican Dennis Bonnen, to demand its passage. Bonnen said McNutt’s “overzealous” visit exhibited “insanity.” "Threats and intimidation will never advance your issue. Their issue is dead," he told McNutt. McNutt told the Dallas Morning News: "If politicians like Speaker Dennis Bonnen think they can show up at the doorsteps of Second Amendment supporters and make promises to earn votes in the election season, they shouldn't be surprised when we show up in their neighborhoods to insist they simply keep their promises in the legislative session.”
Just another school shooting. We are either becoming jaded and insensitive to the violence, or wearing of reading about it.
There is absolutely de-sensitivity. I don't believe I saw this one, but school shootings to me kinda register like a more routine story; like a January blizzard in Buffalo. It's sad, but it's human nature not to delve into each one. Remember Columbine? That was an enormous story. Now? We could not possibility give each one that kind of coverage.

And then there is Texas.
A friend of mine through out a theory that all of these things (constitutional carry, abortion banning) are being done right now to decrease the number of Democrats moving to/voting in TX. He may be right, ha I’ve seen some around here say that they will never set foot in TX, that means it’s working!
Just another school shooting. We are either becoming jaded and insensitive to the violence, or wearing of reading about it.
And then there is Texas.
This seems in poor taste since it basically mimics what actually happened in Afghanistan. Is that supposed to be funny?
No, it's not funny at all. The idea of women fleeing Texas because they are denied rights to their own bodies is criminal. Only problem is, it's in the wrong thread.

It's not surprising to see shootings continue in the USA. Haven't seen a lot of people throwing around their thoughts and prayers. When we don't tweet that enough...someone shoots people.
Thoughts and prayers. What we need is more guns. And none of them ever end up in Mexico, right? All "responsible."
Donald Trump Jr. helped sink Biden's nominee to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives over his support for gun regulations
Donald Trump Jr., former president Donald Trump's eldest son, lobbied aggressively against David Chipman, President Joe Biden's nominee to lead the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, whose nomination the White House is planning to withdraw amid pushback from moderate senators.
Republicans have condemned Chipman, a longtime former ATF special agent who leads ex-Rep. Gabrielle Giffords' gun safety group, for supporting certain gun regulations, including reformed background checks and cracking down on illegal firearm trafficking.
In the evenly divided Senate, Chipman's confirmation would have rested on several red state Democrats, including Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Jon Tester of Montana, who face strong pro-gun lobbies and pressure from the right.
Trump Jr. targeted those lawmakers, publishing op-eds in a variety of local news outlets in Montana and West Virginia in which he called Chipman "the greatest threat" to Americans' Second Amendment rights and warned gun-owners that Chipman would "shred" their constitutional rights.
The ATF, which is charged with enforcing the country's federal gun laws, has only had one Senate-confirmed leader since 2006, in part because of the intense lobbying by the NRA and other pro-gun groups. Even the Trump administration's nominee for the role was brought down by Republican activists and lawmakers.
Add baby shower to the list of places where you might become a victim. Maybe venues should just hand out firearms upon entry so everyone can feel safe and protect themselves? Credit card required for a deposit and turn it in when the event is over?
is it one dead plus the shooter, or is the shooter the only one that died?
I think it was one plus the shooter. And yeah, this is common enough that two dead isn't going to resonate with people the way it used to. Columbine was huge news. Something comparable today? Probably not.

Sure am glad we made buying and having a gun easier for all those "responsible" gun owners because remember, the only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is to have a "responsible" guy with a gun.
FBI: Killings soared nearly 30 percent in 2020, with more slayings caused by guns
Killings in the United States jumped nearly 30 percent last year, according to FBI data released Monday that indicate a growing number of gun-related slayings amid the pandemic.
The FBI said murder and manslaughter rose 29.4 percent — the largest one-year increase since such the federal government began compiling national figures in the 1960s. That historic increase has been known for some time, and has sparked concern from police officials and prosecutors. But the FBI release of data compiled from thousands of law enforcement agencies formally confirms the trend.
Overall, violent crime rose 5.6 percent in 2020, while property crimes fell 7.8 percent, the FBI said. Assaults increased 12 percent, according to the bureau.
Criminologists and police officials have been studying the possible explanations for the sudden sharp increase in killings — from societal changes due to coronavirus, to policing, to increased gun sales. So far this year, officials are seeing a further increase in homicides, but not as pronounced as last year.
The FBI data also shows how much killing in America is fueled by shootings. Gun homicides account for more than two out of every three such deaths, according to officials.
