Is it safe to go to a rock concert when I'm pregnant?

Assuming you're talking only about the occasional concert, it's probably not too dangerous to the baby's hearing, but it's still not recommended for other reasons. By the time the baby is 22 weeks old, her cochlea, the inner ear mechanism that houses all components of hearing, is fully formed. So the baby can hear what you hear, but not at the level that you hear. (Sounds and voices are softer and more muffled.) Why? The baby's hearing is well protected by the muscles around the mother's belly, the placenta, and the amniotic fluid. But each baby is different and we don't know what level of noise may cause damage, so it's best not to risk it. What's more, loud music causes your body to produce stress hormones that can make your heart race, and that isn't good for the baby either. It's important to stay as healthy as possible when you're pregnant, and when you put this kind of stress on your body you're not providing the ideal environment for a developing baby.

Going to an occasional rock concert is fine, but I wouldn't recommend it every night. It's hard to measure exactly how much noise can affect a developing baby.

One study showed that women who work eight hours a day around very loud noise (at levels so loud that hearing protection is needed) run a higher risk of delivering babies with hearing loss. Another study looked at whether amniotic fluid buffered or amplified sound. It turns out that low-pitched sounds (like those from a bass guitar) are slightly amplified by amniotic fluid. As the pitch gets higher, though, the fluid dampens the sound. (This study also found that amniotic fluid amplifies a mother's voice by about 5 decibels, but dampens other voices.)

Yeah but its not like the girl works at the amphitheater and will be going to a concert every night for the next 3 months!

I was pregnant for all the shows I attended in 98 and all the shows I attended on 2000, and will be 2 months 1 week next week when I see Ed and 5 months pregnant when I see the band in FL....

All 3 of my children are fine and have 0 hearing loss...

I was at Lollapalooza at 7 months pregnant, despite ALL of the ignorant comments that I received here,

Don’t listen to these judgmental assholes, preggos! My doctor gave me the okay and so did every other “MOM” on this message pit. The only naysayers were a bunch of dudes that have never, and will never be pregnant!

HAVE FUN! (And bring water and antibacterial stuff.)

i don't get it... what's so creepy about my post? all pregnant women should just lay on their asses and do nothing the whole time? sorry, that's not for me. i worked until the day i gave birth and kept right on going to shows. and my daughter is a little ball of energy just like me... nothing poor about her. she's spoiled rotten and loved insanely.

What's crazy is not that you are laying on your ass.. What's wak is the fact you want a lead singer of a band to rub your pregnant belly!

Wow...you guys are a bit harsh.

When my mother was pregnant she went with my dad to see Levon Helm and they met him after the show and I was apparently kicking...he felt my mom's belly and said "feels like we've got a little rocker in there"...the man was a prophet!

Its really not all that creepy.

I don't think it's creepy that someone famous touches a pregnant womans stomach. I think everyone thinks it was rather strange that this gentleman was setting out to take his 8 month preggo with to get touched...

If you bump into a celeb or something and it comes up, sure. If you make plans months in advance to make it happen...eh...

nevertheless, the OP edited his post to stop the firestorm

you took a two-month old baby to a high-ass volume rock concert? I am worried about that kid's hearing now.

Read the post: her child was NEGATIVE two months old. That is, the baby was still in utero.

Ah, you've mistaken me for the one who originally posted this thread. i never said i wanted ed to touch my belly. i fucking hated it when ANYONE touched my pregnant belly. it's so weird that, as soon as you begin to show, everyone under the sun thinks it's ok to rub your belly. so many times i wanted to punch people.

well, i was just saying that there's a big difference between going to a concert when you're 7 months pregnant and going to a concert with a 2 month old baby.

and no, she's not one of my clients.
