I can see the argument for Helton over the astounding hitting numbers, but I dunno, playing in Colorado and all. I mean I'd put him for the ridiculous BB/K ratio alone. The man walked more than he struck out.

I do not want Rolen going in as a Phillie, he shouldn't. BUT I think he played more seasons/games as a Phillie? But, yeah, fuck that guy. He basically wanted out of here from the minute he came up from the minors. THEN when the Phillies were good he started dropping quotes in papers and trying to angle a way to come back after being with the Blue Jays. Fuck him big time.

I think a lot of people forget that the '01 team was fun and won 86 games. Easily their best since '93. Right after that was when he said he wanted out. There seems to be a narrative now that he wanted out because the Phils had no hope at that point....not the case at all.

He wanted no business of being a leader. He was a grass-is-always-greener dipshit from Indiana that had some weird fondness for a dumb place and their dumb fans like St. Louis because he couldn't take the abrasive asshole nature of people in actual cities.

They were even mediocre in '02 when he was traded. I was living down the shore and remember as the trade deadline was approaching every sports writer coming out and saying basically "he won't stop bitching to get out of here, he said 'you better trade me, you better fucking trade me'." But the thing was - just like Schilling - no trade would be good enough for the return. Polanco was a decent player, but they got basically fleeced in both of those trades.

Phils were about to present plans of a new ballpark (he bitched about his knees on turf), then they sign Thome, then move into the new ballpark. I'd say if he stuck around their whole timeline would've moved up by two years. Again, fuck him.

Actually, probably moved the timeline up like 3 years.

In 2004 the lineup would've looked like this:

    1. Rollins - SS
    2. Abreu - RF
    3. Rolen - 3B
    4. Thome - 1B
    5. Burrell - LF
    6. Utley - 2B
    7. Byrd/Glanville - CF
    8. Lieberthal - C

    That's pretty good!

lol I hear you. Thing is (probably should move this to the Birds thread) does anyone feel weird about this game? Like I don't feel like 2018 - playing with house money, underdog/fuck it mentality, etc etc. Being the favorite is less fun. Like if they don't win the Super Bowl at this point the season will feel like a disappointment. But at the same time, I don't feel any anxiety or nervousness for this game exactly because of 2017/2018. That Super Bowl win took all of that away.

I'm still in shock the fucking Phillies were in the fucking World Series. Very weird - but awesome - sports year.

Yeah those teams always won somewhere around 86 games and just barely missed the playoffs...with fucking David Bell at third.

The other thing about the Rolen trade is it pushed Utley's career back a little bit too. Those two platooned for a year or so before Utley took it over.

Yeah I remember the morning after the 7-0 Game 3 win and I was making World Series Parade plans in my head (oops). In 2008 I really wasn't believing that shit until like 3 hours after Lidge struck out Hinske. Nothing upends your life as a fan than a baseball playoff run. Football is just one game a week (if that). Basketball I still have trouble watching the whole game. Hockey is close but the games are every 2 or 3 days so not quite the same.

2005 and 2006 they missed the playoffs in that last week. Fucking Biggio. Fucking Billy Wagner.

You mean Polanco and Utley? Yes, 2005 had Placido hang around here too long until we traded him for Ugie "I machete chop my farm workers into pieces and burn them with gasoline" Urbina.

Semi-related to this HOF talk - I think you could argue that time also took away from Utley turning in a definitive HOF career.

So, yeah, Big Fuck You to Scott Rolen. Don't let anyone change the narrative nor tell you otherwise.

    Absolutely.

It did allow me to witness his first home run in person though. So...there's that

Ed Wade traded away Polanco and kept David Bell - disastrous decision.

IDK but on their face those numbers are really not making the grade for a "Hall of Famer" especially at a hitting position like 3B. Ridiculous.

I doubt either of these are right, but I’ll throw out Johnny Damon or Nomar Garciaparra as guesses.

I saw you say that the top was Rolen. I threw out Nomar and Damon as the possible player 2.

I got it though. I took a look at the 2003-2005 all-star rosters to refresh my memory of guys from that era and our boy Bobby Abreu jumped off the screen. Clicked his Wikipedia to check his stats and It’s definitely him.

Helton had better numbers than both players. Bottom player have no clue. Only players I can think that came up around that time had better numbers than that (Jeter and Guerrero). Maybe Magglio Ordonez??
