I don’t think that’s why nobody watches. It’s too long and boring. You can almost watch The Lord Of The Rings trilogy in that time. The hosts don’t bring their A-game, you think Chris has GI Jane references in his stand up? The majority of the show is filled with awards you didn’t know existed for a job you didn’t know people did going to names you never heard of. Do I really need to listen to some Foley artist I never heard of and never will again give a speech about how despite no one believing in him, he stuck with it and now his dream came true?
And now it seems the nominees are obscure, I haven’t even heard of half the movies. When was the last iconic movie like Braveheart or Saving Private Ryan to win that I’d care to see a second time?
I think that’s why no one watches.
They've always been long. Well maybe not in the 70s. But since this is or was the Super Bowl of awards shows. They're going to cram a lot commercials.
Your last sentence is another reason which I forgot to put that the ratings are down.

Lol. Your post finally made me google "FOMO". I've seen it said so many time, but never got around to figuring out what it means. Okay, well, lucky you this year then. There was finally something to see.

I don't watch it either, because I can read who won the next day so why in the hell would I spend hours watching what I can find out in 1 minute? But I will argue that a lot of truly excellent films that were not at all obscure have won since the 90s: The Departed, The King's Speech, Slumdog Millionaire, No Country for Old Men, Million Dollar Baby, LOTR: The Return of the King, Gladiator, A Beautiful Mind, The Shape of Water, Argo, The Hurt Locker, 12 Years a Slave.... And FWIW, while it was kind of obscure before they won, Parasite is also totally worth watching twice.
I’ve seen most of those and enjoyed them. But how many of those were from the last 10 years? I think 2.
I didn’t remember Argo and Hurt Locker winning.
Looking the list of winners, the last movie I’d care to watch again was Hurt Locker, 2008.

yeah, you're right mace. I was looking it up, and every single movie nominated for best picture in the oughts I knew of. in the 10's, less than half. I think part of it is, starting in 2009, they expanded the number of nominees from 5 to10, so a lot more obscure or foreign films became eligible. I actually liked that, as it introduced me to a lot more films that are amazing but are less than mainstream.

This got me kind of thinking. I’m not saying all the winners are bad movies, and I know no one said I did. They’re just not those iconic movies I care to rewatch. So I was looking at the top 10 grossing movies year by year. For the last 10 years or more, pretty much the only movies that made the top 10 were either Marvel/DC movies, franchises (Star Wars, Hunger games, etc) remakes or sequels. Many of the top 20 fall into those same categories too.
So I’d imagine they are trying to reward originality, which they should. But at the same time it’s probably difficult to get a big budget original film made when they just aren’t money makers anymore. They might not even make Braveheart today with an original script and a big budget.

I watched because I wanted to listen to Wanda Sykes and Amy Schumer.

That link w Kareem's take was great also.  I love when he writes about something.  His thoughtful responses to things always open your eyes to the subject.  What I don't get however is the racism angle about black on black violence.  I have only head that from the black community saying that.  Don't know if FOX news took that view or any biggoted groups going that route?

Chris Rock….he has lost his comedic edge if he has no guts to make any jokes about the Oscars at his comedy shows.

Chappell and Burr would do twenty minutes on it if it happened to them.

I guess he is taking the high road.  Maybe worried about Will Smith’s mental state.  Commendable.

Rich, famous people sure do attract trouble.

Rock mentioned he was still processing what happened. He likely also has his entire set rehearsed down to the word.

Comedians don't work that way, typically.  Before they (big name comics) take their show to the larger arenas, they've already spent months/years perfecting the routine at small clubs.  They have it down the same way a band creates a setlist, they have all of the beats memorized and timed and their physical movements on stage worked out.  They'll oftentimes record the large performances for possible DVD or audio release.  To try to create a new joke just days before a show without trying it out in front of large crowds, and trying to figure out where it fits in the existing set without negatively impacting the existing act is just asking for trouble.  Throw in the fact that people seem to be split on who was right/wrong on this (just look at Twitter), Rock made the absolute best choice to not address it in his show.  To do so would have been taking an unneeded and stupid risk.  It has nothing to do with his 'edge'.

add in the fact that he is most likely still dealing with the trauma...say what you will about the ridiculousness of hollywood and award shows, but being slapped across the face in front of millions and millions of people isn't something to sneeze at. I'm kind of surprised he's still going through with his tour. that's gotta be some heavy anxiety he's dealing with.

Smith has been banned from all Academy events, including The Oscars, for 10 years.

“Put yer good money on the sunrise”

Let's put this in perspective.  A guy slapped a guy.  It was on national tv and totally uncalled for and legally probably assault.  I don't know that we should hold a grudge against Smith if he shows he is trying to right the wrong.   If the worst thing we all did in our lives was slap someone I don't think we'd all be freaking out.

you/we didn't slap someone in front of literally MILLIONS of people. that's the difference. this wasn't just a slap on the street in front of 5 friends.

just imagine the level of humiliation you'd feel after that.

chris rock also has Non Verbal Learning Disorder, which doesn't allow him to understand non-verbal cues, which is probably why he wasn't able to predict the slap that was about to happen.
