This is why gun control will fail

This is filled with inaccuracies and mistruths. It's one thing to make an informed argument but this is ridiculous. It makes the gun control side a laughingstock, not that I mind that, but unfortunately there are people that are emotional thinkers and will believe these lies.

No matter the subject, one should know what they are talking about before attempting to make an argument as to why their thoughts are correct.

  • I'm not even going to watch the video- I'll take your word for it.

Now should I post a video from, say, oh, off the top of my head, Wayne LaPierre or maybe the disgraced sheriff with his youtube rants, to do the exact thing for the other side of the argument?

Think of your tactic here: you post a video and state, with the title of your thread, that it definitively proves why gun control won't work?

    C'mon, man.

I haven't watched the video either but I'm just glad to hear that someone agrees that emotion should not be a part of thinking. You cannot be a good droid when you have emotion. Compassion is the worst. How can you get anything done when you are all wrapped up in your mushy compassionate thinking? Why do you whimps cry and moan just because someone gets shot to death every few hours? Get over it. Toughen up you pencil neck flower hippy freaks.

You almost had me believing you wanted a real conversation Brian, while compassion should have a part I prefer to make decisions based on logic.

Thirty, my entire point was that his argument is so easy to pick apart that I'm surprised he was allowed to go forward with his presentation. He states that 'ghost guns' are undetectable with metal detectors but he displays AR-15's that have NOTHING to do with his argument. It's quite clearly another attempt at making the AR more evil and has no real intention at doing anything productive. I could go on and pick apart more of his argument that the engine doesn't have a serial number when actually that engine is THE serial numbered part on that firearm.

Either way thanks for the replies.

Please don't anyone post a video of LaPierre.... watching him and hearing him literally makes me nauseous.
The decision to own a gun is usually based on fear and the perceived need for protection, right? Yet statistically, households with guns are at greater risk for gun violence. Doesn't that make gun ownership more of an emotional decision than a logical one?

Is it possible to be totally serious while posting on yet another gun thread? Should we change the name of this segment of the form to A Moving Bullet?

Ok, here's a more serious non-rhetorical: As a result of all of these threads and discussions about guns, has anyone changed their opinion on the subject?

Great question. My opinions haven't changed. I guess I've wanted stricter gun control laws for so long it's just part of me. I honestly am trying to get some insight into how gun rights activists think, and I just can't get there. I don't understand how increased background checks and magazine size limits hurt anyone, for example. It's funny, I'm just as strongly pro-choice, and have never wavered, but I can at least see where pro-lifers are coming from,, even though it's so different than the way I think. But on the gun control issue, I just can't get there....can't even see it. And I try, I swear I do.

As a result of these threads, and the crap I hear in the news every single day, I can say that yes my opinion has changed on the subject. A tiny bit. I have nearly given up hope...thats all that has changed with me...

This video isnt why gun control wont work. Gun control wont work because we're simply past the threshold. This is where i've given up... We have too many guns and there's no turning back. Its our culture. Its sad, but true. I was sarcastic a few days ago in another thread saying we should all give up/give in, and buy a gun becuase everyone will have one and we will have no choice if we want to survive and protect our jewelry, microwaves, playstations, and of course our arsenals of AR-15s.

Wait, your argument is this isa bad presentation because he's talking about plastic guns and how they might be undetectable, but there's an AR-15 on the table too? Are you suggesting that he's trying to confuse pepole into thinking that AR-15s could go undetected or something? Im lost.

I've had some very good conversations and seen more of the side of having guns, more perspective if you will. The fact remains for me is that there are still little kids getting their hands on guns, school shootings every day, and nothing is being done about it. I agree with all your rights to own guns, but too many innocent people are dying because of them.
Wouldn't it be funny if the world ended in 2010, with lots of fire?

why bow to the nra? politicians should be able to tell them to fuck off and not take their cash.

eventually, being endorsed by the nra is going to be a political liability. especially in blue states..

  • In total agreement with the last 3 posts. But I still can't accept that it's too late... I get it that gun rights run so deep in American culture, I get it that people will argue more laws won't change anything. But how easy do we need to make it? School shootings for example... why no conversation about raising the minimum age requirement to buy a shotgun (from 18)? What parent (even a hunting parent) wouldn't feel better about at least requiring parental consent for an 18 year old high school senior to buy a gun? Why is it okay that it's easier to buy a gun than a beer? Who (except the NRA for obvious$ reasons) would oppose stricter minimum age/parental consent requirements?

I agree, JonnyP although I have a hard time accepting that we are past any kind of threshold be it gun control, stemming the CO2 build up in the atmosphere which is cause global warming/climate change, overpopulating ourselves into oblivion, polluting the planet, killing off all the large mammals, turning ourselves into cyborgs, lowering our species intelligence, ending war and having hope. Sometimes I think we should just party until the lights go out and the last curtain comes down. But it's that last one- hope- that has no threshold. Logic and passion can inspire us to keep doing what make sense- to keep working to make things better.

And in some ways I wish I could say, like Henry Rollins has, that I won't waste time partying because partying makes you dull and takes you away from working toward the goal but I allow the hedonist in me time off from the fray. I can't argue that one. image

No, he is talking about one thing (which I can agree with) but he is using an AR for his show and tell. It would be impossible to build an AR out of plastic, plus the size of it would sort of defeat the purpose.

It's another politician talking out of his ass trying to blame the AR for all of the world's maladies.

Yeah... I don't know why anyone would want to regulate anything like this. Because now, if you want, you can make guns at home and don't have to steal them and waste all that time filing down serial numbers, like in the olden days.
Background checks? We don't need no stinking background checks! Vamanos!

Make guns at home... now there's an idea! Plus that would help solve the population problem in a very Darwinian manner. I once knew a kid who made a pipe bomb and blew he blew his hand off. Probably not the smartest kid in school. On the other hand, many years ago (WHEN I WAS A MINOR, ahem), some friends and I made a cannon that could shoot nails through 1/2 inch plywood. No one ever got hurt. Darwinian success or luck? Well... take your pick. :))

  • isn't it just typical of these left-wing legislators - I swear they wanna ban everything!
don't we want to make sure there's plenty of "good guys with homemade plastic guns" when we board our next flight?

You do understand that the bullets would be found in an X-ray, right?

You are right unsung, conventional bullets wouldn't pass xray, thanks so much for the peace of mind for my next flight at least. But isn't American ingenuity and Darwinism hard at work finding other objects and materials to shoot from these guns? Coins for example, or home-made plastic and lead combinations that might eventually be perfected enough to pass through?

And your original disgust with de Leon's presentation is what? That he mixes up the technical terms? Or that he puts your beloved ARs in a bad light? That he's just another liberal lawmaker trying to take away our American rights? Do you disagree with the intent behind banning 3D printed firearms?

I don't know about that... but, I DO know that advanced research is working on drone clusters for military and police work.
How it works is a cluster of relatively cheap, small drones fly as one unit, using one power source. When it encounters a bad guy, it can dispatch one drone to disable (kill) him, while the rest continue on their mission.
If it encounters several bad guys, it will dispatch the number needed to neutralize (kill) all of them. Even if they split up into multiple directions, each target wil be chased down by one drone. Think of it like heat seeking anti-personel hand grenades that will lock on to you and explode when it gets withing leathal range.
If you run into a building, it will follow you by breaking through a window or blowing up a door so another one can continue the pursuit.
If you hop into a vehicle and try to escape, the mother ship can fire an ordinance that can easily catch any surface vehicle.
    ...
For police work, they can chase you and report your position to nearby squad cars. If you can defeat one, you will need to defeat the entire cluster in order to get away. If you pose a threat, a tear gas drone can disable you. Got a gas mask, no problem, a stun grenade will take you down and a taser armed drone will keep you where you are til the cops show up to pound the life out of you with their night sticks.
    ...
Also, these can be flown manually or programmed to operate autonomously. All of this comes about because of the asymetrical tactics being used by smaller bands of opponents, rather than conventional forces utilizing conventional tactics... although these types of weapons will find their way to large theater operations.

I can build a gun at home, but won't...Having said that (and as I've mentioned in other threads) I'm sorta entertaining the idea of building a bazooka for Jason P (at his request).

Don't worry, the Bazooka will only be able to fire off Strawberries, buuut if he wants it to turn deadly no problem, a small modification will have it able to fire High Fructose Corn Syrup mixed with Fluoride. (Yikes)
