listened to the first half of the disc again today and I am really digging it. some really good playing on this disc. thanks for the recommendation, never heard of these guys before. i love the black crowes and tedeschi trucks band, they have a great southern rock vibe.
It's not too bad, but not great either. I don't feel like this one ever takes off musically. The Black Crowes comparison is fair. I just don't this this has as much personality, in the music or vocally.
Probably a little too much generic country rock to enter the the permanent rotation for me, but I'll keep it around for the occasional listen for a bit.
My assessment was a couple of pages ago. I have read some of your reviews and those are fair and accurate. I don't think it will enter my permanant rotation but I will listen to their follow up album whenever that follows. I like the country aspects a little bit. I can see how it would be too much for some people though. I agree with the less personality than the Black Crowes statement. I am glad that nobody hated it at least.
So...what's next? I have been waiting for something I haven't heard before...

Before the next selection comes up can we agree on some guidelines for the review? I was pretty detailed with mine. Some of you just had a couple of lines. If this is a discussion group sort of thing shouldn't we be trying to go a little deeper so we can discuss? Maybe I'm wrong.

Cool by me. I'll probably opt for a track by track format for future albums, unless it something unbearable.
Now if we can just learn what we'll be reviewing...

I found the album and listened to the first two songs so far. Will keep going through it this week and post my review soon. My initial reaction to the first two songs is that his voice is very similar to Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros...which isn't a bad thing. I like the voice and songwriting so far.

His voice kind of sounds like Tom Waits. Ok, so here I go We No Who U R: I like the flute in the song and the tempo. Wide Lovely Eyes: It’s an ok song. Not really digging it Water’s Edge: I really like it. The songwriting is really interesting and it is very intense. Jubilee Street: I really like the different layers of sound and the lyric “She had a history, but no past” really jumped out at me. The whole story that he tells is cool. Mermaids: I like the comparison of myth with religion, at least I think that’s what he’s saying. We Real Cool: I like the guitar and the lyrics “And the heartbeats and tears and nervous laughter spilling down all over you, girl”. Finishing Jubilee Street: I really like how he talks some of the lyrics and how it is based on a previous song on the album. Higgs Boson Blues: My favorite song hands down. I am really digging his growl and his songwriting. “Hannah Montana does the African Savannah” lol Push the Sky Away: I like the message of the song that even if life is difficult, you still have to hold on and make the most of your life.

After two dramamine and a shot of whiskey this is what I came up with:
We No Who U R: There is a almost sort of after the fact quality to the song. A nice female backing voice with a somber reflective keyboard loop is included here. Liked the use of the flute in this song too.
Wide Lovely Eyes: Starts out with an upbeat guitar and organ. Talks about taking a ride to the sea, using waves goodbye and waives goodbye interchangeably. There is hint of going somewhere but not knowing where.
Water’s Edge: A really dark song. Almost sinister. I feel it's about prostitution, he is restless in this song.Looking for his fix. The last phrase uttered, "There is no love people."
Jubilee Street: I think this is the main song on the album, And my interpretation is this he has love for hooker that has "history with no past."
Mermaids: Has a nice shimmmery guitar, and counties to employ the use of water in his imagery. He also is believing in things he cannot see.
We Real Cool: Definitely talking about the devil. Who is the "Good Shepard.", You know. And we real cool. A dark bass line throughout.
Finishing Jubilee Street: "See that girl coming on down, coming on down." I am not sure if he killed the girl in the story or if he was referencing drugs/heroin. Could be both.
Higgs Boson Blues: A journey through hell. Very vivid imagery, saw Robert Johnson, Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana and flame trees. Scary. Would not want to be trapped here for eternity.
Push the Sky Away: A good way to close out the album. It seems like he wants to forget the prior occurrences and explains how he will "Keep on pushing the sky away."
This is a very good album. I would probably give it 3.5 out of 5 stars. I am not sure if it is worthy of all of the critical acclaim it has received. I suppose that was one of the main reasons I choose this as an "Album of the Week." I will say the musicianship is good and the story telling is excellent. I am not familiar with Nick Cave's prior work. I will not be exploring his back catalogue as this album was a little bit dark for my taste. Who's next to pick?
His voice sounds like Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros to me but I also hear the Tom Waits comparison too. I like the songwriting as a whole. I am not familiar with any of his back catalog either so I was curious to try it out. Track by track breakdown: We No Who U R - Very brooding & atmospheric. I like the backing vocals. Wide Lovely Eyes - Pretty good but the music just never took off. It just felt like it was building to something that it never achieved. Water's Edge - Vocals and lyrics had an urgency but the music did nothing for me. I am not a fan of Indian influenced stuff. Also at times it seemed like were too many syllables in the lines. Jubilee Street - The line "she has a history but no past" stood out to me. I really like the guitar in this song. The music takes off like I have been waiting for from this album. My favorite song on the album to this point. Mermaids - Again, very atmospheric with the background noises/vocals. I like the warmth the organ adds. We Real Cool - A little too slow. Nothing really jumping out at me about this song. Finishing Jubilee Street - Nice little ditty. The spoken word parts actually made sense. I like the storytelling feel of this one and the link to Jubilee Street being my favorite song on the record was nice. Higgs Boson Blues - Another song that I really like. Another great guitar sound and the reference to Robert Johnson and the Devil was pretty cool. I like the build of this song. Push the Sky Away - Very churchy vibe musically. Vocally and lyrically, not so much. I like it. Seems like it has a Pearl Jam album closer feel to it.
I would give the album 3 out of 5 stars. Only 4 songs I would probably listen to again (Jubilee St, Finishing Jubilee St, Higgs Boson Blues & Push the Sky Away). I probably won't be getting into the back catalog but it was a good listen.
What's next?

First time to ever really sit and listen to Nick Cave. His voice reminds me of Jim Morrison in a way, and somebody else that I can't quite place. Gonna just review this as I listen.
We Know Who U R-like the vibe, doesn't build like I hoped thought(b/c of a few certain parts) it would, but some cool parts none the less...flute is cool and there's a guitar that repeats a certain note a few times that is cool and made me think it was gonna start it's ascent
Wide Lovely Eyes-nice transition into this track, like how it adds or maybe just changes the harmony each time through, several cool little background noises...2/2 on tracks that seem like they're gonna crescendo, but never really do
Water's Edge-if nothing else, dude can grab your attention with the beginning of a track, wild(literally) vibe on this one, love the final lyric stanza(will of love)
Jubilee Street-this one starts out pretty, like the subtly cool guitar part, favorite so far...love the background sounds quite a bit, feel like this one finally has some payoff to the buildup
Mermaids-Yet another cool musical beginning, like to find out exactly what he's doing there....Hehe, he said snatch...seems like this one could be epic on headphones, much like the rest of them
We Real Cool-ooo, this ones pretty dark, but I like how the violin brings in some light for the chorus(?), turns into quite a gorgeous track for how ugly it starts....dig how it never looses that dark underlying(sometimes up front) groove, but the song escapes from that with the other musical additions
Finishing Jubilee Street- where do I start with this one..has me where I can't quite get comfortable in my seat, kinda menacing in a way, like how the music helps serve as the vocal harmony, kinda repetitive but doesn't wear out its welcome
Higgs Boson Blues-not sure what to think of this one, kinda cool chord progression, nice how it gets a little bigger each time through, could really do without the Hannah Montana mentions
Push The Sky Away-obvious closer, least interesting track to me but I think that can kinda help the wind down vibe that can make it a true closing track
Like quite a bit of the music, but I don't think there's payoff to the tension often enough. Pretty great flow to the album as a whole. Cave's vocal style doesn't work for me. Too spoken wordy. Seems like a great album for people who are into more subtle stuff, but not something I'll return to very often, as a whole.
Dewie, you and I felt about the same about the Nick Cave record it seems. I have heard a lot of Dr. Dog and they are really good. Haven't heard Fate yet so I am cool with it for sure. Review to come soon.
