is Lost Dogs the best studio album?

It's technically not an album like Ten or Vitalogy so it's difficult to compare. Each album has a certain feel to it and Lost Dogs just mashes it all together. I really enjoy Lost Dogs, but I'd call myself crazy if I ever thought of putting it ahead of Vitalogy or Yield.
It would be kind of like calling a bands 'greatest hits' their best album.

A-Hey, man, what's your favourite Pearl Jam album?
    B-Without a doubt, Rearview Mirror.
A-Oh, great song. I love Vs, too!
B-No, bro, Rearview Mirror is my favourite album.
    A-That doesn't make sense... it's a greatest hits.
B-Don't tell me my business; you're not my dad.
A-Okay, but I'm just saying that a greatest hits is a mix of every album. It doesn't really count.
    B-Blow me. I do what I want.
A-Alright then, this conversation turned real quick.
B-Whatever. Tickets for the upcoming shows are going on sale tomorrow morning so I have to go home, sit at my computer, and constantly click 'refresh' so I can get as many tickets as possible. Seeing Pearl Jam once a tour isn't enough.
A-Don't you think it's a little ridiculous that you're hoarding so many tickets? How can you afford that?
B-I'm skipping on child support and not eating. Oh, I need to by this never Sevens thing they just released. I have no idea what it is, but I need to have it.
    A-What does it cost?
    B-Doesn't matter. I need it.

 I loved that even though I'm turning into a show hoarder. But at least I'm not a merch hoarder :).

well that is where you are wrong, a compilation is a collection of previously or mostly released stuff, like a greatest hits, since Lost Dogs is all stuff not on previous albums, I consider it, it's own album, but it's all studio stuff, so by definition, I think that qualifies it as a studio album

lost dogs is a compilation album.

it has covers on it, a song from a soundtrack on it, and songs from OTHER compilations (music for our mother ocean).

If the recordings of those songs were actually taken from those other sources and just stuck onto the album then it would be a compilation album. But they recorded every song specifically for Lost Dogs, whatever their origin, and therefore it's not a compilation album as far as I'm concerned. A greatest hits compilation, for example, is normally just the original studio album recordings thrown onto an album together. They aren't recorded again for a greatest hits album. Also, what soundtrack song is on it? Dead Man was going to be on a soundtrack, but it wasn't... what song on Lost Dogs was on a soundtrack first? Seriously asking....

Think we're over analyzing and maybe thread could be changed to "is lost dogs better than the studio albums".

And the answer is HELL YES!:mrgreen:

Its a compilation record. No debate here. This is not a "proper" record, its a b-sides and extras record. If you wanna throw it in as a studio album, fine, but its a definite NO on being the best. A few outstanding tracks (HTI, Drifting, Undone, Wash, ect) but just too many b-sides and no cohesive flow to compare it to other records.

That's better. There are 11 of my top songs on Lost Dogs. Best "Non Studio" Album ;)

Not sure why it has to be one or the other. Can't it be neither a studio album nor a compilation album? Because it doesn't fit either way, and definitely not what a compilation album is .... I know it doesn't matter, but I hate when things are mislabeled.

I think Binaural is probably their best album, if considering it from all sides. :D

 I gotcha. Doesn't matter to me. I didn't mean it was really what a "compilation" album usually is. Just like you though, I also hate things being mislabeled, and Lost Dogs is NOT a studio record.

Not that it matters, since we are just arguing semantics here, but wikipedia has definitely made it's mind up on the issue.

Not every song was re-recorded. Leaving Here, Gremmie, and Whale Song are the same versions as their respective compilation albums, I believe, and many of the b-sides from the singles are the same as previously released versions.

Hard To Imagine was first released on the Chicago Cab soundtrack.

Oh riiiight. Thank you, forgot that was from Chicago Cab.... although it was rerecorded for Lost Dogs, no?

I am obviously very knowledgeable about some of these songs. I also didn't know that Leaving Here, Gremmie, and Whale Song had been on other albums. Which one(s)?

    From wikipedia:

"Leaving Here" (Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, Edward Holland, Jr.) – 2:51
Originally from the Home Alive: The Art of Self Defense compilation.

"Gremmie Out of Control" (Jimmy Haskell) – 2:25
Originally from the Music for Our Mother Ocean Vol. 1 compilation.

    "Whale Song" (Irons) – 3:35
Originally from the Music for Our Mother Ocean Vol. 3 compilation.

"Hard to Imagine" (Gossard, Vedder) – 4:35
Originally from the Chicago Cab soundtrack, which is from the Vitalogy sessions. This version is an outtake from the Vs. sessions.

  • This probably puts the debate to bed (for me)....from pearljam.com's description of the album:

"This 2-disc album features 30 tracks compiled from Pearl Jam's extensive b-side archives and from various benefit albums and soundtracks. "

Either way...Lost Dogs is awesome, but No Code is #1 :D

    Yup.

There are others you could have considered for it.

    For example:

    - They included Last Kiss...but not Soldier Of Love (I know it's live, but still)
    - I Got Shit was on RVM. Why not put Long Road on LD?
    - they included a variety of xmas single studio songs (Let Me Sleep, Drifting, Strangest Tribe), so why not: Angel (screw Dave A?), Olympic Platinum (stupid fun song but still), Happy When I'm Crying (this maybe above all others...it's a legit song), I Just Wanna Have Something to Do

    ??

Could've been a three disc album easy.

    As it currently stands- no

If the below B-sides were an album, it would be my favorite ever:

    Wash
    State of Love and Trust
    Alone
    Brother
    Fatal
    Breath
    Sad
    Footsteps
    Hard To Imagine
    Undone
    Hold On
    Yellow Ledbetter

That is a great album. Minus Ledbetter. I used to love it, but i can't stand that song now. a case of the overplay.

I was thinking the same. This is not like any of the actual studioalbums; it is a bunch of songs from different timeperiods and made under very different circumstances, put on an album. There's no real context and overall feelings. And to me it is not even close to being on the same level as any of the studioalbums.
That being said, I enjoy it, and like the fanvalue of it. I think there are some nice songs on it, that shows the band from all angles. It is sort of a kind of RearViewMirror's uncommercial and unorganized twin. :)

Wonder how fans, who has a little more relaxed relationship to Pearl Jam than us TenClubbers, feels about Lost Dogs...
