Good Bands that Hit the Crapper.

I revisited my Radiohead discography (all studio albums) on my Ipod at work today.

Man...they made three good albums and then went to shit.

No offense Radiohead lovers, but I had trouble salvaging any tracks post OK Computer.

What other bands have fallen from grace (of all but the niche super fans) as evidently as them?

I think I'm Rainbows is a masterpiece and absolutely love Hail To the Thief. I think Pablo honey gets quite a bit of undue hate, but I'd say the rest of thei albums are a step up from that, except for that last hunk o crap they put out.

I think most of the replies here will be pretty predictable. I'm expecting, though I don't necessarily agree.....Weezer, RHCP, Smashing Pumpkins

Ummmm, you realize that one of their albums post OK Computer was named album of the decade by several publications, right? Radiohead is still making amazing music. It's just more experimental now which some rock fans may not appreciate.

Really? I couldn't get into those. I made it a point to try and save at least one song on my Ipod for historical purposes, and I struggled. I chose #9 on Rainbows (Jigsaw) and did save three from Hail (2+2=5, There There, and Wolf). Pablo honey I had previously edited down years ago to 6 tracks (Creep is still there best song ever). I saved one song from King of Limbs but that was a super stretch (Lotus Flower). The Bends and OK Computer were the only two records that escaped unscathed.

I haven't heard recent RHCP and SP is kind of blah compared to their old stuff. I'm still loving me all the Weezer records though! I saw them live in San Diego this year and they were great.

I assume you mean Kid A. Years ago I whittled that down to two tracks (National Anthem and Optimistic), so I haven't listened to it in it's entiretey for a while...but I trust my past judgement. Same with Amnesiac...saved only two (I Might Be Wrong, Morning Bell/Amnesiac).

Got to clear out real estate on the Ipod for some new/better music!

Yeah...NIN is about as experimental as I get with music. Glad you enjoy it though. Hope I didn't offend.

  • Kid A and Amnesiac to me were trash. fuck the bleeps and bloops. give me actual instruments.

I thought the Pumpkins' Zeitgeist was one of their best ever. I know I'm in the minority on that, but I loved it, I listened to it today as a matter of fact. Oceania? ok, but kinda boring. Just one long song to me. But the live show to go along with it was good. A bit too pumped up though. It was billed as "visually stunning effects from the same guy who brought you Roger Waters The Wall Live". SP had a spinning globe with some images on it. It was bizarre that they pumped it up the way they did. Maybe Billy expected everyone to be on shrooms.

Chili Peppers are a great example of your original question. I find their music a complete bore now. I bought their last one for $5, listened to it, and gave it away. it's really too bad, because their output is 10x the quantity of PJ. Seriously, 18 b sides from one album? that's insane. good for RHCP fans.

Hey, I skimmed through Rainbows again because of the rave review(s) (and because I'm bored out of my mind at work), and the only change I made was I'm keeping Bodysnatchers and dumping Jigsaw.

I hear you about the blips and beeps! lol

Not that familiar with Amnesiac b/c I've never cared for it, but Kid A doesn't really have a lot of " bleeps and bloops". I think that was the beginning of the sampling, but it's mostly made of you're standard rock instrumentation.

Zeitgeist is really spotty, but has some good stuff. Oceania feels like a more complete package to me.

I was thinking the same thing. Seems like after both of their second records they just said F it.

This one might surprise but I feel Soundgarden peaked at Superunkown the last two albums have been okay at best.

I like the first 3 STP albums, but not much after that.

With Bush, I didn't care for The Science Of Things too much, but I liked Golden State. I'm not into the New Bush.

Some more for me, not necessarily The Crapper, but I have very little use for after a certain point...

Some seriously crazy shit in this tread so far...Radiohead going downhill after 'OK Computer', 'Creep' Radiohead best song??? I can't imagine someone who has actually spent any amount of time listening to Radiohead saying these things with a straight face.

As for an answer to your thread, I think a lot of people could make a pretty strong argument for Pearl Jam. Not necessarily my opnion, but I'd have a hard time arguing against it. Don't get me wrong, they're incredible live and I do enjoy every album they release, but if I try to look at their latest releases from a critical, non biased stand point....well let's just say it's not too pretty.

I know people who don't think Radiohead even went uphill far enough to go down it. For every band somebody loves, there's somebody who thinks they suck. Different strokes for different folks.

But to answer your question, the one that first comes to mind is 'Band of Horses'. They put out two incredible albums and everything post 'Cease to Begin' is utterly worthless...not to mention that every original member of the band has left except the frontman.

I usually don't either, but when many publications list the same album as #1, you start to think that it may be accurate

And most of those lists had The Strokes, Arcade Fire and other rock bands near the top- not pop garbage

I'd go back one more album personally, because I thought Binaural was pretty disappointing. I like it more now than I did then, but my Pearl Jam "golden era" ends with Yield.

And if you do a Google search on this topic you will find similar lists on other forums, and Pearl Jam is usually on them, but the topics I saw don't even give them credit for No Code and Yield. Post-Vitalogy seems to be the "Crapper" from what I see.

will add my morning jacket to the list. they went downhill with the last few. u2 used to be an amazing band too, but not since the 80s

Agreed on most counts here. Violent Femmes were a major let down after seeing live them early on and having such high hopes for them dashes. Moby Grape is a sad story in light of Skip Spence losing his way then losing his mind and finally losing his life. A very sad story.

Good call...TOTBL is nothing short of a masterpiece...Antics was a drop off but still very good...OLTA has a few very good tracks but is a clear downgrade from Antics...and their latest release has one decent moment (Lights) and the rest is pretty much a joke.

Yes, they are pretty much THE cautionary tale for rock musicians. Not just because of Skip (I wouldn't have included them just for that) but they also made a bunch of poor decisions, let themselves get screwed around by managers and producers, got charged though not convicted for having sex with underage girls, and other issues. They were probably doomed before Skip ever took to attacking people's doors with axes. They had a lot of promise, but petered out very quickly.

I hear you, but my thought on the PJ topic is that the majority of people out there aren't real music fans...not like everyone who is reading this right now. They aren't in any fan clubs, they don't spend time on fan forums, they don't go to many concerts, they don't buy much music, and they only listen to what the radio gods say is worth listening to. There are unfortunatley a lot more sheeple on this planet than people.

Granted...PJ could've done a better job promoting themselves post Vs., but it is what it is.

That being said...you all get a big  for mentioning PJ being anywhere near 'Crapper' status!!!
