I've found the only way to make sure you get what you want on ebay is snipe yourself at the last 5 seconds your max amount you are willing to pay.

Sniping has always been the way to go on eBay. Never bother with the petty bidding wars throughout the duration of the auction - all that does is raise the final price. Just watch it and snipe it when the time comes.
  • yah what exactly is the problem here?? thats just good strategy... my problem is with the people who jack the prices up to $200+ with 3 days left... you just DO NOT bid on something until atleast the last hour... its dumb to do otherwise...

getting sniped is so annoying, i understand what people are saying here re the whats your problem? questions, but when you've been watching for 7 days, and lose out by 50cents at the very end its hard to take, of course its the way it goes, but it sure does get on your tits, hence the frustration in the first poster, been there so many times, its heart breaking, especially when youn really really want it and hardly ever see it (whiskey set and basketball set - mother fucking pain in my ass)!!!!
  • That does suck. My wife has bought some stuff from Yahoo! online auctions here in Japan, and there system will reset the clock to 10 minutes if there is a bid within the last 2 minutes. If you are watching, then you always have a chance to bid again.

that only serves the seller by pushing the price higher.

    AGREED
Bid the amount you are willing to pay within the last few minutes of the auction's end
  • pjtradekingpjtradeking Posts: 4,045
That is one of the biggest probs with people on the bay...People see something they want and IMMEADIATELY place a bid....All this does is drive YOUR OWN price up...You dont need to bid until the end...Decide what you are willing to pay for it, wait til the LAST possible few seconds and place your bid. Someone will do it to you, so why even be mad about it? I look at it as a sport...:)...If you cant be there at auctions end, then you are at the mercy of your bid, but if you can be around, play the game!! :)

There are several "snipe" services that will snipe for you if you can't be around. Ebay even has their own. Just put in your max bid and that's that. I love it because I don't get pressured into bidding higher than I might if I was bidding at the last second. :)

problem with the ebay one is that it bids straight away when you set it up..and if someone else has one set up it up-bids until one has reached the max bid.. you need to do it less than 1 min before the auction end for it to work really..
  • One of my favorite software tools is Auction Sniper. It's an automated program that bids at the last second for you with your max bid. That way you don't have to actually be at your computer sweating it out. This software is especially helpful for auction's that end in the middle of the night.

To the people who complain about sniping--if you can't beat em, join em.

No, I have mine set to bid 6 seconds before the auction ends. You can set it for any time you want. :)

Nope, sniping services have always been that way. We've used one for years. :)
