I don't hear Matchbox 20 at all... Sorry dood.

I don't love every single song on the record... but this album is much better than Backspacer... I think it's a pretty good Pearl Jam record.

    Best album since Binaural.
That's after 2 listens...and I generally hate most albums until I give them at least 3 go throughs.

Im somewhat with you on this. Ive listened and i have to skip through like at least two maybe three songs each time. Sirens is a good song but it just makes me think too much about my divorce and i cry everytime i hear it. Future days is a love song and i cant listen cuz it reminds me im not in love right now and it doesnt look like thats gonna happen anytime soon. So ya this album is just meh for me. Still a hardcore fan just looking forward to older not newer songs this tour. I long for the days PJ had songs about being pissed off! That would be more fitting for me right now! To each his own i guess.

Maybe still not the best counterpoint song to use since the original poster can literally refer you to 1:39 in the song that is quite "adult contemporary" if not flat out Jimmy Buffett island music.

a buddy of mine shared these same sentiments earlier today.

He basically texted me: "Pearl Jam used to be hard rock... now their soft rock."

I mean I don't want to step on toes here but... I'm not sure this album sets them that far apart than any other work they've released.

    Betterman (1989)
    Black (1991)
    Release (1991)
    Y Led (1991)
    Daughter (1993)
    Indifference (1993)
    Elderly Woman (1993)
    Nothingman (1994)
    Hard to Imagine (1994)
    Who You Are (1996)
    Off He Goes (1996)
    Around the Bend (1996)

and so on and so on....

Since the day of PJ's beginning.. theire have always been melodic... slow jams and love songs infused in an album with hard rock... fast paced songs.

Call it the Pearl Jam recipe if you will. It's how they've made albums and songs for years.

    Just sayin'

People are on here saying that perhaps Sirens doesn't fit with Lightning Bolt or Mind Your Manners.

People likely said the same thing about Black with Even Flow and Why Go.

Ten turned out to be a pretty good record. ;)

I think it's better than Backspacer, but I have trouble saying it's better than anything else. The first half of the album is great, but the second half is just OK, in my opinion.

Ive had this thought too however I have only given it two and a half listens which might play a part in that. However, on those two listens it was very enjoyable. Waiting to really sit down and be able to enjoy it.

I think I have to agree after one and a half listens... I am just not feeling this album. I found myself bored with the album and wanting to put on something else. I just felt that musically there wasn't much going on and nothing exciting... But I have only listened 1.5 times...lol... But we'll see if my opinion changes with more listens...

If anything, this album shows me just how "meh" Backspacer was.

Getaway, Sirens, Infallible, Pendulum, Swallowed Whole, and Yellow Moon are all solid songs. Pendulum is as good as anything they've done in a few albums now.

I'll view Mind Your Manners kind of like I looked at World Wide Suicide. Not a bad song, but not something that I'll put on specifically to listen to. Lightning Bolt is OK. I'm still trying to figure out whether I like My Fathers Son or not. LTRP and SBM I could do without. And Future Days is what it is. A pretty song.

And another thing. These songs tend to take on a new life when played live. I'm sure I'm not alone, but I much prefer listening to bootlegs over albums. There's a good chance that some of these songs will be amazing live, and maybe, hopefully, be more enjoyable for people.

I think the album is good. My only gripe right now is with the last three songs. After Let the Records Play, the album seems to fall flat to me. SBM, YM and FD are decent tunes but I feel like there should be something in between.

Hearing the negative responses to LB makes me think of a quote from Paul McCartney. When the White Album came out people were panning it - it was too long, should have been one record instead of a double album, etc. Paul's response was, "It's great. It sold. It's the bloody Beatles White Album. Shut up."

There are songs on this album that I like more than others, but I'm just so excited to be listening to new music from my favorite band after waiting 4 years I can't complain. Even SBM is sounding better after a few listens.
I escaped it...a life wasted...I'm never going back again

Celine Dion and Michael Buble are Adult Contemporary. How does this remotely sound to anything those two have done?

I think Future Days has similar qualities to several of the Celine Dion songs I was forced to listen to, as a kid.

Yes, it's slow but not cheesy.

But I doubt the average Adult Contemporary listener would ever make it all the way through Lightning Bolt to get to Future Days.
