Liz, if you haven't already tasted it, try the old - simple and healthy - good dessert: Greek yogurt with honey. :P

Been there, done that ;) I like stirring maple syrup in it too.

That rolo cake is almost too much  It fills me up just thinking about it

I shared the s'mores pie recipe with the baker in the family, and I'm hoping that she whips that up for us while we're on the Cape next week.

Probably the best thing I know how to cook is fillo pastry layered with butter and then filled with this amazing cream cheese/ricotta cheese yumminess baked until golden brown. The filling turns into a light cheesecake. After it is baked a simple syrup is drizzled over the top. Don't know what to call this in English except really unhealthy and delicious! Of course, traditional baklava is always good too... These are special desserts and reserved for very special occasions in our house.

    Are you talking about revani?

They are both delicious (revani and baklavas), especially when they are accompanied with one or two balls of ice-cream. FYI, they're more like traditional Turkish desserts than Greek, but of course you can have them in Greece too.

That's not the same that I make though it also looks delicious. That looks like what we call "Basboosa" which is like a semolina cake with a simple syrup. It's more Turkish/Egyptian/Moroccan I think too. My dessert is similar to something called "goolash" in Arabic but I've modified the recipe a bit so it's not really that either. I just know it's good and I can only eat a small sliver of it.

I put mine in a trifle bowl, because it was for a picnic/birthday, and I wanted to put it together in advance, and not risk the thing toppling over. I just used a box cake instead of making it from scratch as the recipe says, because Im lazy, and had a bunch of other stuff to do for the party, but I did make the whipped cream from scratch, which was easy.
That recipe sounds fantabulous. I love the idea of putting it in a trifle bowl. The presentation is great but it's still convenient.

Why did I click on this thread? I'm gaining weight just looking at it.

Mission accomplished! Substituted gluten free graham crackers and gluten free all purpose flour. Turned out perfect! You were right about the top crust being tricky to flip over. I had to piece it together too. It was no doubt the sweetest thing I've eaten in a long time and oh sooo yummy! My kids thank you for sharing the recipe. Now I have to burn it off on the bike...

It's Oreos and cool whip, so it was pretty yummy, but we weren't too impressed...we definitely enjoyed the smores pie waaay more. I'm sure we will still manage to force ourselves to eat it.... ;) but I'm not sure I'd make it again. :|

Anyways, they look like the donuts they have at the Chinese buffet's that I have been to. Just deep fried dough balls with some sugar on them. I never understood why they had them at the Chinese buffet...thinking these tasty treats were just an American intrusion on the Chinese cuisine (Americans like deep fried everything, and we also like to Americanize other culture's foods  ), but now Im even more confused as to why they are in the Chinese buffet in America if they are Greek/Turkish in origin. We've just rationalized them as being donuts, and we apparently like donuts with our Chinese food.

We splurged tonight in an attempt to put a spin of celebration on this end of summer thing that everybody's actually feeling shitty about. Nothing like self medicating with a little chocolate, right? We made gluten free chocolate cupcakes with chocolate raspberry ganache icing filled with real whipped cream. They would rival anything on Cupcake Wars! :D

On a side note...I'm trying not to feel like that 40 min bike ride this afternoon was just blown away by chocolate-raspberry awesomeness.

That sounds amazing! I love raspberries... I had them yesterday too. We went to a ice cream place named Orange Leaf. They have like 8 soft ice machines in there with two kinds of flavours each and you can mix them yourself, swirl them together or just get single strands. Ypu pay per ounce. And after you filled your cup with ice cream / froyo goodness, you can go to a counter full of add on stuff like cookie bites, fruit, nuts etc etc. I went with the flavours wedding cake (absolutely superyummmm!!!), vanilla (meh compared to wedding cake), chocolate cookie batter (drool...), red velvet cake (never again, so boring!) and a pineapple sorbe (oh.my.gawd.) and topped them with a bit of fluid caramel, fresh rapsberries, strawberries and some bites of chocolate fudge brownies.

Yeah, I'm ready for a second visit
