I think Breath has the most appropriate opening line...
"Oh tonight began with anything..."
Love Boat Captain opening MSG 1 '03 was amazing. And Ed changed the lyrics to "Let the show begin"
Wash opening Gorge 1 '06 was very appropriate with "Oh please let it rain today..."
Release at Vancouver '05 was ridiculously powerful. Blew me away.
Conclusion: I think it depends on the time/place/conditions.
"A compliment for us, is a compliment for you."

Got to agree with this one but has it ever been an opener recently other than St. Louis '03? I used to say Release, but had it as an opener at so many of my shows it's become more ordinary. Big fan of Sometimes or Can't Keep. But despite all this babble, my vote goes to ...
Up the West Coast in 2006 and Hawaii++Santa Barbara, San Fran x 3, Portland, Gorge x2

SF 2000, 2001, 2003--- oh or you can come to terms and realize you're the only one who cannot forgive yourself
Of the Girl was awesome in Lisbon 2000 as the first opener of the tour
Sometimes would be sweet too. ....as would Breakerfall.
Release is always nice.... As is Long Road
For some reason, Animal just popped into my head.....if the band just came out and stood still on stage for a few anxious moments.....then: dun-dun-dun-da-dun-dun-dun-da..................................*!@*(!*$*(!)($!@)_)#$_*
1995: Milwaukee/Summerfest 1; 1998: Indianapolis, Greenville, Knoxville; 2000: Lisbon, London 1 & 2, Detroit, Alpine Valley, Chicago; 2006: Chicago 1 & 2, Summerfest 1 & 2 (w/ Tom Petty), Sydney 1 & 3, Melbourne 1, 2 & 3; 2007: The Vic, Lollapalooza
how about animal? at least at indoor shows the place just goes completely apeshit when that noise comes on and the band is about to come out. If they did that in complete darkness and then all of a sudden laid into animal full bore and cranked the lights on at that moment the building would be destroyed. I cant imagine how intense that would be.
I think they should seriously do the all darkness, cant see a fucking thing thing.....let the crowd go crazy for like 20 seconds, then play the opening part to jeremy before the vocals but then kind of fade it out as the cymbals come on and then go into an opener. place would go crazy. they could do that for most of the tour then not actually play jeremy until like the end of a leg or something

Love Boat Captain - let the show begin...
I truly enjoyed Life Wasted Reprise in Albany, that truly kicked ass!
Albert Einstein (1879-1955)
I saw Hard To Imagine LIVE at MSG!
I wish they'd mix up their openers though... same goes for the closers...
not complaining, just saying there's an element of predictability to their shows when it comes to first, last and encore tunes.
Esther's here and she's sick?
hi Esther, now we are all going to be sick, thanks
