Gun crime has plunged in the United States since its peak in the middle of the 1990s, including gun killings, assaults, robberies and other crimes, two new studies of government data show.

Yet few Americans are aware of the dramatic drop, and more than half believe gun crime has risen, according to a newly released survey by the Pew Research Center.

obviously we need to factor in the source ... but you're not in good company ...

certainly didn't mean for that to say that we are fine, I just think it is interesting that most of America thinks gun crime is up when it looks like gun crime is down.

Was replying to those talking about that culture of fear that the NRA/right and those on the left perpetuate to further their cause. Interesting that both sides take the same approach to fear mongering and suggest a VERY different path for a solution, however the statistics would show that in fact, gun crime is down...

Sorry, that's just not true. Can't even make that statement universally about the handful of outspoken folks on this board.

well, if I'm incorrect, then I stand corrected, but I have never seen anyone on this board say they want a complete ban on guns. a complete ban on "assault" gun, yes, but not all guns.

I, personally, have said that in a perfect world that I'd like that guns didn't exist, but I don't disagree with someone wanting to protect their family/home.

The Gun Report: June 12, 2013

Here’s something you don’t see every day: the wounds left by bullets after a shooting. Debra Fine, who was shot four times in Friday’s shooting rampage on the streets of Santa Monica, showed hers on Piers Morgan Live Monday night. Sitting next to her husband, she calmly pointed out the hole in her left shoulder. She held up her bloody shirt – what was left of it – and the yellow bruises all over her arms were clearly visible. Her right ear was bandaged, having been grazed by a bullet that whizzed uncomfortably close to her head.

When asked whether she could have stopped the rampage with a gun of her own, she said, “Anybody who goes out to buy a gun thinking that they could defend themselves against somebody like this? Is crazy.”

Joe will be tackling the physical and emotional aftermath of a shooting in his next column. Here is today’s report.

    —Jennifer Mascia

Five days after a shooting spree at Santa Monica College claimed five lives, two people were shot, one fatally, in an alley near the college Tuesday morning. The incident marked the third shooting in Santa Monica in five days. In addition to the rampage at the college, a cyclist was shot and wounded in what police believe is a gang-related attack.

    —The Los Angeles Times

Four people were found shot to death in Downers Grove Township, Ill., in an apparent murder suicide Tuesday. Police were called to the residence, where they found the bodies. The crime scene is a block away from the home in which a couple and their son were shot to death in 2010 in an attack sparked by a custody battle.

    —CBS Chicago

17 people were shot in seven separate shootings in St. Louis, Mo., Monday night into Tuesday morning. Four teenagers, ages 17, 15, 14 and 13, were struck by flying bullets while standing outside a home at around 10:30 p.m. Twenty minutes later, three young adults were targeted by gunfire while they were standing near a car and a man with an assault rifle approached and began shooting. Forty minutes after that, a 40-year-old man was walking in south St. Louis when he was robbed and shot in the knee. Just past midnight, a 26-year-old man was shot in the lower leg outside a business.

    —KSDK.com

Two men were found shot to death in a basement hallway and another man was injured in Kansas City, Kan., Tuesday morning. Neighbors said they heard as many as 10 shots fired. One of the victims was 17, a family member said. No arrests have been made and police have not released the names of the victims.

    —KMBC.com

A woman was shot in the chest and killed by her stepfather in a home in the West End of Louisville, Ky., early Tuesday morning. The victim’s twin cousins were also shot and have been hospitalized. Fred Leach, 55, lived at the home and was taken in to custody after he admitted to his involvement in the shootings. Police described the situation as “an ongoing domestic argument over living arrangements.”

April McDaniel, 18, was shot multiple times and killed Monday afternoon as she sat on a porch in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago, Ill. Four others were wounded, including a 16-year-old, when a Jeep carrying four men pulled up and asked McDaniel’s group if they were selling drugs. When they replied no, a masked driver opened fire. The Jeep used in the shooting was found burning in an alley a few hours later. At least 11 other people were shot in Chicago Monday.

    —WLS-TV

Ollison Wheeler, 19, was shot in the backside late Monday while walking outside his Pleasant Grove, Tex., apartment. Wheeler and an unidentified woman were walking in front Wheeler’s apartment at about 11:30 p.m. when three suspects exited a red Dodge and began talking to the girl. Wheeler confronted the suspects and one of them pulled out a pistol and shot him. The suspects fled.

    —The Dallas Morning News

A simmering neighborhood feud erupted in Roswell, N.M., Tuesday morning, putting one man in the hospital. At around midnight, an unidentified 35-year-old man was shot in his chest and arm outside a home; he is now hospitalized. Michael Farmer, 54, with whom the victim had been drinking earlier in the day, was arrested for the shooting. The victim’s mother said her son had previously gotten into a fight with the shooter’s son because he allegedly hit the victim’s sister.

    —KRQE.com

A man in his 20s was shot multiple times and killed in a targeted attack in the parking lot of a southwest Houston, Tex., shopping center. The victim was found lying between two parked cars. Police have an idea of who the suspect is.

    —Houston Chronicle

The 14-year-old girl who claimed she was injured by a drive-by shooter while selling candy in Jonesboro, Ga., Monday afternoon was actually shot by her 18-year-old brother while he was playing with a gun, police say. The teen had said she was shot by a man traveling in a car with other men, but the shooting actually occurred at the victim’s house. Both siblings could face charges.

    —AJC.com

A man was arrested in Tucumcari, N.M., for allegedly shooting his son at a northeast Albuquerque, N.M., church Monday night. The pastor of New Beginnings church was presiding over a funeral when William Chavez walked in. Chavez began arguing with his two sons, and after one of them pushed his father, Chavez pulled a gun out of his pants and shot his son in the shoulder. The victim will survive.

    —KRQE.com

A 38-year-old man was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after he was shot multiple times at an intersection in Vallejo, Calif., Tuesday morning. Police saw a small black Nissan speed away, and police gave chase but ultimately lost it.

    —CBS SF Bay Area

A 19-year-old was found shot in the leg at a train station following an altercation with two young men on the streets of San Jose, Calif., Tuesday afternoon. The suspects fled on foot. Police said they do not know a motive at this time, or if the shooting was gang-related.

    —MercuryNews.com

According to Slate’s gun-death tracker, an estimated 4,924 people have died as a result of gun violence in America since the Newtown massacre on December 14, 2012.

    Godfather.

What I get from the post is that the more guns that are out there the more stupid crimes like the ones listed above will happen. When people are in a grave situation and are angry, that gun is a tool to unleash anger. That is why I am against the "more guns = less crime" solution.

Also, many of the major shootings in the last few years would NOT have been stopped if there were no gun free zones. (sorry to go a bit offtopic, just thought I'd add this on). Why? Because people who are mentally ill and want to kill do not expect to live. The Newtown shooter would have been fine with two people dead. He just wanted to kill as many as possible. Yeah he wanted to outdo the Norway guy (I believe that was his goal), but he did not expect to live through that. It doesn't matter if someone was armed. Sure he would have been stopped earlier and that would have been great, but he would have done the shooting regardless.

Guns should not be taken away (although I believe assault weapons should be in military only), we need to get this mentally ill people checked out and make sure they cannot get a gun and end it at that and see how that goes.

A Senate Judiciary committee in Raleigh, North Carolina, approved a proposal Tuesday to eliminate a law that requires that people receive a permit from their county sheriff before they can buy a handgun. The bill also expands the places that weapons can be taken: all educational property, including private schools, and parades and funeral processions – unless, of course, they’re expressly prohibited.

“We’re here to enhance our Second Amendment rights, which have been too long restricted by the previous majority,” said Sen. Buck Newton, a Republican. But Gail Neely of North Carolinians Against Gun Violence told the Senate judiciary committee that fewer than 3 percent of people in the state have concealed-carry permits and that 90 percent of the state favors tougher restrictions.

“This is ridiculous,” she said. “There is no credible evidence this bill will make us safer in North Carolina.”

North Carolina would join more than 30 states that don’t require a permit to purchase a gun; a handful of states also allow concealed carry without a permit. Here is today’s report.

A 16-year-old girl is recovering after being shot in the face while on her way to a Sweet 16 party in the Ezra Street neighborhood of Bridgeport, Conn. Kemoune Thomas, a sophomore at Central High School, was shot while standing with one of her friends. Police have strong leads on who may have shot her, but so far no arrests have been made.

    —NBC 14

Two teens were found shot to death Wednesday morning in a Gary, Ind., home. Fredrick Stubbs, 19, was shot in the back and Dontrell Wilson, 19, was shot in the head. Police are investigating.

    —Chicago Tribune

Two teens were shot outside a Brooklyn, N.Y., housing project early Wednesday. The victims, both 17, were talking in front of the Howard Houses in Brownsville around 12:30 a.m. when a gunman approached the pair and opened fire, striking each teen in the leg. They are in stable condition. The shooter is at large.

    —New York Daily News

29-year-old Terrell Gerard Owens was shot and killed near a convenience store in Hampton, Va., Tuesday afternoon. Officers were called to Roy’s Quick Service II convenience store shortly after 1 p.m. and found the victim suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper body. Zachary Lamont Batts, 29, was charged with murder and possession of firearm by a convicted felon. Owens’s death is the 11th homicide in Hampton this year.

    —Daily Press

Elijah Carraway, 19, was shot and killed during an altercation that began as an argument over drugs in Pottsville, Pa., Tuesday night. A witness said Carraway stood up for himself and his friends; he was later found dead behind a fence. The suspects were tracked down at their home in Philadelphia. The shooting happened on the same block where the last homicide happened in Pottsville, about a year and a half ago.

    —WNEP

A woman is in critical condition and her husband is charged with attempted homicide after a shooting at a home in northeast Bakersfield, Calif., early Wednesday. 58-year-old Mark Joseph Madrigali, a local attorney, was detained.

It is ridiculous. Asinine and backward thinking at play. I haven't been as enthusiastic as I have been in the past speaking for gun reform because it seems that the US seems hell bent on preserving mayhem with their love of weapons. It's frustrating talking to people so determined to ignore common sense or exercise good judgement.

I feel sorry for the US people blessed with common sense and the security they need to not feel threatened by noises in the night, sensational stories, or conspiracies. The less blessed and overly scared citizens rule the roost and because this is so... the status quo will maintain itself with the 'inmates running the asylum'.

Looking at it from another angle, I'm pretty sure if Canadian law makers wished to solicit support from the Canadian citizens to ease up on current gun control measures that an overwhelming majority of my fellow citizens would strongly oppose such a move. We don't want our neighbours possessing AR-15s or handguns that might fall into the wrong hands because these 'wrong hands' would be the true threat to our security- not our government, nor our military, nor an invading force.

ANAHEIM (CBSLA.com) — A 72-year-old woman fired a gun at a would-be home invasion robber over the weekend in an unincorporated area of Anaheim.

Jan Cooper said she was home with her 86-year-old husband, a decorated World War II veteran, in the 10000 block of Gilbert Street around 12:30 a.m. Sunday when she heard an intruder at her front door.

The suspect, however, couldn’t get through the locked door, so he attempted to enter through a sliding glass door at the back of the home. The grandmother, while on the phone with a 911 dispatcher, said that’s when she warned the prowler that she had a gun.

The man ignored her threats and the resident opened fire with her .357-magnum revolver. The bullet missed the man by mere inches.

he Gun Report is not the only Web site sounding the drumbeat on gun violence. Daily Kos has a feature, “Another Day in the (Gun Crazy) U.S.A.,” which was also started at the end of January. Penned by Tom Begnal, the blog tracks gun deaths via news clips and lists them by city, minus biographical details. There’s the interactive list that we quote at the end of each report, curated by Slate and @GunDeaths. And there’s the Huffington Post, which has launched an entire vertical dedicated to cataloging the stories of gun violence victims and survivors.

Entitled “Guns in America,” the page features a testimonial from a Columbine survivor, the tale of a grandfather’s suicide, and voice mail messages from relatives mourning the loss of family members to gun violence.

But a disturbing element keeps popping up in the coverage: the feeling of power people derive from being armed. Dorene Macias, a former gang member who was shot four times and still has a bullet lodged in her head, nevertheless admitted the rush she felt upon owning her first gun, a .22. “I can remember the thrill, the adrenaline of it – knowing that I had a gun, that I was going to shoot somebody,” she said. “My gun made me feel bigger than God. It made me feel invincible, like nothing could get through me.”

One perpetrator of gun violence, who accidentally shot his girlfriend and served 10 years in prison, describes the same feeling of omnipotence that carrying a gun gave him.

“It felt like, you know, I don’t know how to describe it,” he said. “You walk around the street and you have this sense that you are stronger than you actually are, tougher than you actually are.”

As long as guns are so readily available, that lure may be hard to diminish. Here is today’s report.

    —Jennifer Mascia

What exactly are you worried about, Godfather? I'm aware of the privacy issues that has people in a tizzy right now... but even if someone, somewhere in a cubicle was listening to Godfather try and pull of a fantasy football deal over his cell phone... what could possibly come of this?

I'm not saying I'm supporting access to the privacy of your homes... but I am saying that it's not likely they'll be monitoring your boring conversations about which beer tastes better a Heineken or a Corona. I'm pretty sure they wish to keep tabs on persons of interest and if that means a building doesn't get blown up as they do so... More stringent gun policies are long overdue. Stop opposing them because you are freaking out that there is something bigger coming down the pipeline.

Are the gang-bangers responsible for the majority of gun deaths going to suddenly put down their guns once new legislation is passed? You know they want to be on the right side of the law. The truth is, the laws won't help. What we need is a culture that doesn't tolerate violent acts of any kind. That's a long way off. Humans need to evolve beyond violence and into universal respect for life and that won't happen in a courtroom.

These questions as well as the frustrations expressed regarding your economy's slow turnaround since Bush ran it into the ground have me wonder about the lack of 'big picture awareness' some Americans possess.

There's no immediate fix for your problem. You need to stop- or at a very minimum limit- the introduction of more assault rifles and handguns into your society. You need to limit the sale of ammunition to carded (approved) people. These would be two steps I can think of to begin to move your country towards a safer place.

Or you can continue with the status quo if you are happy with it.

The "big picture" is that the violence won't stop until people stop wanting to commit violent acts. Simple as that. Until then, I don't find it unreasonable for individuals to arm themselves in order to protect themselves and their loved ones.

There seems to be some notion that just anyone can walk into a gun shop and buy a machine gun. That is not the case. "Assault weapons" are already illegal.

Also, please don't confuse me with some gun loving, right wing Republican.

    Well...

Then let's hear how we're going to solve the big picture you speak of? Sounds great, but hardly practical dontcha think? Since the beginning of man... we have gone to great lengths to demonstrate our propensity to commit violent acts.

So... we can stick our head up our asses and speak about philosophy and such... or we can take measures to curb the amount of violence some of us can inflict on others.

If you are not a gun loving, right wing Republican, why talk like one?

And assault rifles are not illegal. You can go buy one at the Big 5 Sporting Goods store for fuks sakes.

Yes...tougher gun laws would definitely help. I mean, Chicago has THE TOUGHEST gun laws in the country, and their gun related violence is almost non-existent. Oh wait...this just in...  ...nope never mind.

Chicago's gun laws are the equivalent of posting a "No Sharks" sign up in shark infested waters.

So are you saying criminals don't pay any mind to the laws? Shocking.
