My family has always reffered to Alpine as our backyard. I learned how to ski there at the age of two. Began tailgating for concerts at 16. Monsters of Rock, Grateful Dead, Motley Crue, Rolling Stones, Guns n Roses, Lollapalozza, DMB, many many more, and of course Pearl Jam.
IMO, nothing beats warm summer breezes, cold beer and good music!
i prefer indoor, seems more intimate. And with that being said, looking forward to Wrigley

How dare you start a whole thread about the topic and not include all the facts! :P
For the record, I'm the individual he's arguing with about venues in Houston. and for the record, I love both indoor and outdoor venues, however the outdoor ampitheater in Houston, called The Woodlands pavilion is an exception to that rule.
The venue is located 40 minutes outside of the city (if no traffic, I've had it take over 3 hours to drive there in traffic), and has some of the worst acoustics I've ever heard. I blame it on the oddly shaped tent they chose to install:
if you're not sitting in the lower bowl seats the sound is terrible... forget about the lawn.
In Houston I'm an advocate of our indoor venue: the Toyota Center. The sound is much, much better, and the location is actually centralized in downtown, instead of being way out in a suburb...
If this was the outdoor theater in Houston, I'd be all over. Such an awesome venue. The sound there is absolutely impeccable, and guess what - the venues located in civilization! I love the amp... I've seen so many shows there... tool, PJ, edgefests, etc... my bro and one of my best friends actually worked there during the 09 show... the friend actually got to meet Ed and the whole band backstage while he was working...
Anyway, to conclude my rant.... outdoor venues everywhere but Houston,... outdoor venue in Houston.......
and for the record the only reason he's repping the woodlands, is cause the venue's in his backyard!
Shep:
This wasn't directed at you just made me wonder if there was a preference. Reading replies shows preferences for both.
I much prefer outdoors....makes the shows unique and if there is bad weather, no biggy adds to the memory. Now some indooe venues are great like MSG but I'd take The Gorge any day.

exactly, always liked outdoor shows much more than indoor ones

Shep you know... The Toyota center is not nearly big enough.
The Woodlands is total shit..... Way too far away and Montgomery Cty PIGs are terrible. They ruined that place after Hurricane Ike by expanding it, typical greed on the account of Live Nation.
The shed concert concept has outlived its usefulness. All those venues around the country are old and crappy. More and more arstists are prefering indoors it seems, including Pearl Jam.
Indoor for sure. I like the rock club feel, not the festival thingy so indoors it is. And if you're outdoors there are so many things to distract you and draw your attention from the stage.
Kool Kat Club 1992, Moderna museet 1992, Globen 2012, Friends arena 2014

Well the noise of the crowd just floats away outdoors (along with the music), so I can totally understand why bands who feed off crowds would prefer indoors.

ah yea soz old son ...it can get absolutely packed but its so huge [the field] that you can just sit down stretch out and enjoy a beer theres no chairs but if your not bothered about being to close to the stage then you just take your own chair and chill.
ill be ther in 28 days and cant wait my greatest wish is to see pearl jam on the pyramid stage ....maybe one day ah .

Considering they pretty much play only festivals now, Id say the odds are good.
For me the sound is far better outdoors. I've come to think the reason is all the fan club seating. It seems the entire crowd knows the words to all of the songs and the singing makes it harder to hear the band. I am not knocking the fans, i too sing a whole lot at shows and so i didnt really notice until i brought first timers. I started to listen for their perspective. Twice i thought there was something really wrong with the sound or with my ears. those were indoor shows. Ive since been to a few outdoor shows and one more indoor. The outdoor shows sounded great which ruled out my hearing loss, and the next indoor i couldn't hear as well. Anyone else experience this?
I personally cannot stand outdoor shows. I don't like warm weather, and outdoor shows are always in the summer. Too hot. And they usually have portapotties instead of real washrooms. Yucky for women. Also, I prefer it dark for shows, and most outdoor shows start while it's still light out. Indoor shows all the way for me!

I really only like the indoors.
However, the Woodlands is a magical place.

Some of my favorite shows have been outside, but as a fan and somebody who works in the touring industry I prefer indoors.

Cool looking but is it all GA? I dont think I could take that.
Lol, standing in the grass at PJ20 I vowed never to go unless I have a seat or it is GA close to the stage. Too old for that shit I guess.
