Indoor, without question. Sounds better, better vibe usually, and in the summer, I find it too fucking hot outdoors to be in a tight crowd of people. Yuck (still looking forward to Wrigley though ).
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~ Desiderata
Indoor and a good part of that is because being from the Philly area our outdoor experience (other than MIA last year) is in freaking Camden. just dislike that venue (sound on the sides suck), parking lot and area in general. hope I never go there again

How dare you start a whole thread about the topic and not include all the facts! :P
For the record, I'm the individual he's arguing with about venues in Houston. and for the record, I love both indoor and outdoor venues, however the outdoor ampitheater in Houston, called The Woodlands pavilion is an exception to that rule.
The venue is located 40 minutes outside of the city (if no traffic, I've had it take over 3 hours to drive there in traffic), and has some of the worst acoustics I've ever heard. I blame it on the oddly shaped tent they chose to install:
if you're not sitting in the lower bowl seats the sound is terrible... forget about the lawn.
In Houston I'm an advocate of our indoor venue: the Toyota Center. The sound is much, much better, and the location is actually centralized in downtown, instead of being way out in a suburb...
If this was the outdoor theater in Houston, I'd be all over. Such an awesome venue. The sound there is absolutely impeccable, and guess what - the venues located in civilization! I love the amp... I've seen so many shows there... tool, PJ, edgefests, etc... my bro and one of my best friends actually worked there during the 09 show... the friend actually got to meet Ed and the whole band backstage while he was working...
Anyway, to conclude my rant.... outdoor venues everywhere but Houston,... outdoor venue in Houston.......
and for the record the only reason he's repping the woodlands, is cause the venue's in his backyard!
Houston, Texas... Believe it or not, there are 7 million people here... must be a couple of fans who'd love to see you play.
I think it totally depends on the band. I may see certain bands only because they are playing a rad outdoor venue such as the Santa Barbara Bowl, Hollywood Bowl or Greek Theater in Los Angeles.
I usually shy away from the generic Live Nation outdoor amphitheaters because of all the extra marketing hoopla to which you are subjected when you walk from the front gate to your seat.....allthey want to do is get every possible dime out of you.
Indoor, especially after getting back to Fairmont Hotel in Chicago with mud all the way up my legs.

i vote for indoor. My first 4 PJ gigs were all outdoor shows; one baseball stadium, one amphitheatre and two festivals. It wasnt until 2010 until I saw an arena show. Better sound in a room.
Unforgetable experiences in outdoors venues like Wuhlheide and Gorge or Costanza Zur, Buenos Aires unfortunately seem to be the exception, not the rule.
I would say indoor for:
1-)the crowd factor. Outdoors, the crowd doesnt hear each other and so does not unite in singalongs. That is partly what sperates Buenos Aires 2011 from 2013.
2-) As someone said, outdoors crowds can get so jam packed, you start to confuse your body parts with those of others around you. Not bad if an attractive girl is standing beside you like in my case in San Paulo but I wouldnt count on that for each show.

And I think the darker the better, and it's never dark for a good portion of the show during the summer when it's outside.
Great point and one of the main reasons I prefer indoor shows. There's nothing quite like the band opening with Release in the pitch black of an indoor venue.

Outdoor all the way, but I need a seat. I will not sit in the lawn anywhere. Give me open air on a nice summer night with some cold beers and life is good.
This, assuming the weather is good. Luckily I was under the cover for PJ20 night 1. Arena shows can echo pretty bad. Every venue is different though.
Outdoor shows just have a better vibe. People are tailgating and the open air just makes for a happier experience imo. When I was younger I loved the lawn seats. I had a ton of friends around and it was easier to smoke. Now I am older have less friends at shows and bad back so I vowed to never sit in the lawn again after PJ20.
I would just like to see the band play again in Houston. I would like to see them play toyota center though. I'd be ok with them playing woodlands, but I think Toyota would be a better venue to see them in. so to answer the question, i prefer indoor venues.
My family has always reffered to Alpine as our backyard. I learned how to ski there at the age of two. Began tailgating for concerts at 16. Monsters of Rock, Grateful Dead, Motley Crue, Rolling Stones, Guns n Roses, Lollapalozza, DMB, many many more, and of course Pearl Jam.
IMO, nothing beats warm summer breezes, cold beer and good music!
