So having a freindly discussion with one of my Houston neighbors on another thread......and got me wondering if my fellow PJ fans have preference of outdoor to indoor venues.

What do you prefer, outdoor or indoor and why?

Or if it deosn't matter one way or another.

  • indoor, hands down.
really hate the outdoor shows, on the whole. the seating, the atmosphere, and the sound, are all inferior, imho.

i would take the 400 seats in any stadium over the lawn in any amphitheatre.
If I was to smile and I held out my hand
If I opened it now would you not understand?

Indoor because I had tickets to an outdoor venue one year that got cancelled (Cincy).

indoor for all the reasons above

Outdoor all the way, but I need a seat. I will not sit in the lawn anywhere. Give me open air on a nice summer night with some cold beers and life is good.

    Indoor. No weather concerns.

Pearl jam played Hartford indoors for the first time in 2010. Much better in my opinion.

Indoor - better sound and don't have to deal with weather.

  • Outdoor. I enjoy the weather rain or shine. I had some of my best shows in the lawn. The atmosphere is more open.

    It depends on the weather:

    The Gorge:

2005 - Sunny, Warm (maybe just over 20 degrees celcius)
2006 - Too Hot. Over 40 degrees C!! (almost 120 F)... I was so burned out by the time they started playing. There's no shade at the Gorge (or barely any). You cook alive out there if its hot.

Memorial Stadium Seattle '98 - Friggin Awesome!
Grizzy Stadium - Missoula '98 - Friggin Awesome!
Olympic Stadium - Calgary '09 - Horribly laid out venue - Friggin' Great atmosphere.

I guess I really like the outdoor venues as long as the weather was decent. Most of the outdoor shows I've seen were right around 20 degrees outside, perfect concert temp. 40 degrees was too hot :)

It could just be the energy at GA shows (which many outdoor venues tend to be). That Calgary '09 show felt really vintage to me. Lots of older songs in the setlist, the crowd was insanely energetic, and Eddie seemed to be his Old School self. I really enjoyed that show :) (much more so that the two Seattle shows later in the same year).

Edit: One of my favorite non PJ shows was out doors. It was AC/DC in Edmonton about 3 or 4 years ago? A big Thunderstorm blew over during the concert. We had shitloads of rain and lightning while the band played. The crowd toughed it out and the band toughed it out. They had to use the squeegee broom type things to push the water off the stage/walkway between songs.... it was epic. Imagine lightning and thunder everywhere while they are actually playing Thunderstruck :) In my top ten for sure, the weather helped :)

I've only seen them at Alpine(several times), Milwaukee Ampitheatre for Summerfest and at the United Center in Chicago once. My seats were on the second level at the UC on the side. In my opinion the outdoor ampitheatre's sound way better than the UC, but it could be because of where my seats were in the UC. It seemed to echo a lot.

indoors if its small/ theater- not an arena. the key arena has horrible sound- but i would freak to see them at the moore or the paramont or wiltern or the showbox ( like that would ever happen) Benaroya has amazing sound too.
outdoors- if it is the gorge. if you have never been to the gorge- put it on your bucket list.

Depends on the song. I think Given to Fly is better outdoors, for instance.

Outdoors, as long as it's not windy. The 2010 Indy show was pretty spotty sound wise under the pavilion, with the exiting storms. It improved quite a bit when I left my seats to hang with friends on the lawn.

Much better atmosphere, dunno how indoors could ever compete with that for a band like PJ.

In my experience the sound has been much better at amphitheaters, as well. Indoors is loud and echo-y and outdoors the sound can breathe. My only gripe is that it's sometimes not as loud, but I'll take that as long as I can make out the music.

My opinion is outdoors all the way, but that answer comes with an *.

If condtions are great, temp is good, you have a covered seat, etc, etc. I'd always prefer this. I live 30 mins from Alpine Valley and I honestly believe it is a top 5 outdoor place to see a show anywhere based on a lot of things mostly being the sound is always great and if you have a seat you are covered.

Of course, things do not always work out that way, it could rain (ie. PJ20 day one which was a mess...lucky for me that was my night with a seat). It could be freezing (ie Alpine in 2000, the forever dubbed "ice bowl"...that was insane, but I kind of blame the band for schedueing an outdoor show in Wisconsin in Oct).

So all of that said I guess it's a risk/reward thing... do you want an indoor place, where you know exactly what you are going to get no matter what, or do you want an outdoor venue where it could be a magical summer night under the stars or a cold rainy mess? I vote outdoor and I'll take my chances....like scheduling an outdoor wedding...it's either going to be awesome and better than you imagined, or it's going to be a cold rainy day and everyone is going to be pissed off!

  • Indoor has superior sound, crowd noise and rain is not a concern. On the other hand when you're outside it's easier to enjoy the greener (wink) things in life. I enjoy both types of venues.

Indoors all the way!! Though the only outdoor venue I would like would be reserved seating theater settings. Like so ..

I have lawn seats for a show in June by a band I have wanted to see for years and am already regretting the purchase. If it was indoors I would be nothing but excited.

It depends. I've had good and bad.

What I will say is that I can't stand the half in, half out type of venues like Camden and Hartford. They are the worst of both worlds.

The answer is very easy for the ones saw Pearl Jam Live at Wuhlheide Berlin.

Every time, this venue alone wins the argument... :D

If the weather is nice, I love a good outdoor concert. Then again, hard to be the intimacy of a small indoor concert. Hmm... I can't decide.
