I wouldn't say "ya, what a dick" i'd say he was spacing off in deep thoughts. thoughts on probably 470 other things besides boarding the president's marine helicopter. he did walk back down the little stairs there & he did shake the marine's hand & he did speak to him for a short moment. i see a simple mistake caused by overloaded thought.

I agree Chadwick. Technically the President, a civilian, doesn't return the salute. Returning the salute was really started by Reagan. But Pres. Obama did salute the pilots, and probably just at that point realized that he hadn't done so for the marine outside. And knowing the cameras were rolling and knowing the flack he got about the umbrella thing, he turned to address the marine guarding the door. During a Presidential detail like that the marines or soldiers are "At Attention" and are to keep their eyes straight ahead and not look at the President. The marine did really well until the President was right in his face and talking to him and then he couldn't hold back the smile.
And the sun it may be shining . . . but there's an ocean in my eyes

Sorry, my post was meant as sarcasm. I'm trying, although apparently not very well, to make fun of this thread.
I thought it was very thoughtful for him to come back and shake his hand when he didn't have to.

Comical. I took it as completely serious.
We should have seen the sarcasm... but there are actual people who suggest, promote and believe such things. There are no limits to the nonsense we are sometimes subjected to on this forum and as such, it's really tough to discern foolishness from light-hearted humour.
