AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — The National Rifle Association has spent much of the past year under siege, ardently defending gun rights following mass shootings in Colorado and Connecticut and fighting back against mounting pressure for stricter laws in Washington and state capitols across the country.
Now, after winning a major victory over President Barack Obama with the defeat of a gun control bill in the U.S. Senate, the powerful gun-rights lobby will gather in Houston this weekend for its annual convention.
Organizers anticipate a rollicking, Texas-sized party — one that celebrates the group's recent victory while stressing the fight against gun control is far from over.
"If you are an NRA member, you deserve to be proud," Wayne LaPierre, the NRA's brash, no-compromises chief executive wrote to the organization's 5 million members last week, telling them they "exemplify everything that's good and right about America."
The NRA couldn't have picked a friendlier place to refresh the troops. More than 70,000 people are expected to attend the three-day "Stand and Fight"-themed event, which includes a gun trade show, political rally and strategy meeting.
Texas, with its frontier image and fierce sense of independence, is one of the strongest gun-rights states in the country. More than 500,000 people are licensed to carry concealed handguns, including Gov. Rick Perry, who once bragged about shooting a coyote on a morning jog.
Concealed handguns are allowed the state Capitol, where simply showing a license allows armed visitors to bypass metal detectors.

That last sentence really tells how scary this organization has become. It's become STRICTLY a business to make money for the various gun companies.

I'm not sure I buy into that stereotype.

Of course there are extremes here (anywhere, really), but I would hope/imagine that the majority of gun owners aren't all about "yee-haw! Got meself a gun! Now DANCE, motherfucker!"

Most folks fall in the realm of common-sense measures, not banning of all arms nor providing them to anyone who wants them.

So I'm drinking my coffee and watching a replay of the NRA Annual Meeting this morning and one of things Wayne LaPierre said led me to do some research... He said that Chicago ranks 90th out of 90 in Federal prosecutions of gun crimes and suggested that Obama doesn't care about gun violence in his hometown, which is absurd and offensive, and also suggests that he either didn't watch the State of the Union this year or is just willing to lie to people who seem overly willing to believe him. According the Syracuse Univ study that LaPierre cited, Northern Illinois does in fact rank 90th out of 90 districts in Federal gun prosecutions, Central California ranks 89th, and Eastern New York is 88th. But why is that? The Feds don't care about those districts? Or it is because local authorities in those districts can prosecute pretty much as well as the Feds can? Unsurprisingly, the districts that rank at the top of the list are in very rural places like Alaska and Kansas that don't have the resources the Feds have. Urban areas don't need as much Federal assistance, and LaPierre certainly understands that... He is deliberately distorting the truth because that's what he's paid a million dollars a year to do. He has no shame.

Kind of cold. No... really cold.

I'm not sure you are capable of understanding so I'm not expecting much of a response outside of a few of these  or these  ... but do you realize that neutral parties (basically everyone from outside your country) look in at this issue and see the NRA and gun enthusiasts as a tragic failure for common sense and good judgement? It's depressing that human beings can become so blinded and stupefied by their passion for a gun that they would place their children and communities at risk so they can continue to fire really cool guns at beer cans.

Nobody with half a brain thinks for a second that the government is waiting to unleash tyranny. This argument is ridiculous and carries no weight. At all. Period.

Nobody cares that your founding fathers etched 'the right to bear arms' on a document 2 centuries ago. They had no idea that the musket would evolve into single user death machines. Most think that the founding fathers would be slapping their foreheads at the failure of future generations to adapt and evolve so that the country they fought for, secured, and envisioned could realize itself.

For that matter, nobody is saying disarm. They are saying limitations. Sound measures to control the type of weaponry a typical citizen should possess- balancing risk with need.

I used to think you were reasonable on this forum. It bothers me that we share the same opinion on the Death Penalty issue. The strongest argument against it- for me- is the company I seem to keep. I might have to revisit my position again.

One of the vendors at the convention is selling these. the-ex-zombie-target.png
It is called "The Ex", a target that bleeds and is supposed to represent your ex-girlfriend. Maybe so you can practice before you actually go after her. Way to promote domestic violence. Here is what the Republican Party SHOULD do:
    1. Stop being crazy.
    2. Go back to core Conservative beliefs.
    ...
What has happened is they've become branded with:
The Christian Coalition. Not Christians or Christian values, but political Christians such as the Pat Robertson types and the Jerry Falwell followers that want a Christian theocracy in the U.S. We know that ANY theocracy is not the best place for individual freedoms... if you are still not sure, please, refer to the theocracies that exist in the Middle East as examples.
The Gun Culture. The ones that use fear to justify personal security of gunfire. They claim the government is evil and wants to take our guns away... yet, hold soldiers and cops up as heroes who use their good guns to neutralize bad gus with their bad guns... but, the ones that will come to take aways our guns will be... cops and soldiers because they are part of the government. And the fear of roaming hoards of bad guys and psychopathic rapist/murderers... yet, don't want any background checks to make it extremely difficult and expensive for these bad guys to get guns to commit their rapes and murders. Come on guys... pick a side.
FOX News. This is nothing more than the mouthpiece of Rupert Murdoch. It is nothing more than a 24 hour Op/Ed station on cable television. This is the spawning ground for lunatic conspiracies fueld by celebrity entertainers such as Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Ann Coulter, Bill O'Rielly, et al to sell their books at the local Wal-Mart. The loonier the conspiracy, the more books are sold.
    ...
Sever these 3 ties and come back to Planet Earth where reason and logic are the best tools we possess to solve our problems. Get back to reasoned debate. Understand that you are NOT the lord of everyone and we should do as you believe and there are complicated entanglements tied to all of our issues... and other ideas and means to fix them.

No. They cut off the waist and hands because if they didn't, instead of shooting it, they'd be fucking it in their trailer.

There's a lot of groups that thrive on the theme where their way of life is always under siege. You see it with groups like the NRA and certain religious groups (which then adds the element of armageddon/end of country/end of world). Who wants to live in a constant state of defense, paranoia, and fear? The Republican party needs to not play these themes into their platform. It just draws in the kooks and extremists.

Is there any doubt that there is not a reasonable, compromising bone in their body? What happened to principled compromise? When did the law of the land become protect me and mine even at the cost of you and yours? I'm not sure why I continue to be stunned by people who *think* they are standing by their morals/values/principles when in actuality they are *imposing* their morals/values/principles onto the rest of us then throwing a tantrum when they are called on it. And usually calling on the Constitution to back up their sometimes erroneous claims.
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

Seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned...
