How about millions of people, young especially, who are struggling with who they are and feel like they have no one to look up to or follow. The same people that look to YouTube videos to talk themselves out of committing suicide because society tells them they are different. Perhaps one of these kids would have rethought their decision by having someone to look up to who came out of the closet in the most masculine career possible and did it successfully with the support of many peers (TBD).
I care that its an important step, it's an important step for him to make in that they are many 14, 15, 16 year olds that are afraid to step forward and some choose to end their lives just to get some peace. I know I have a 16 year step teen who faces this dilemma but chooses at this time to live as most other boys do. He hangs out with girls and has barely any male friends, the girls are so comfortable with him. So for now he lives his life in secret and JC's step forward will help many others who have to live their lives in secret.
There was a time where interracial relationships was forbidden and even illegal in some states. It took probably some star celebrity to break this ridiculous culture we once had. Now today many don't bat an eye in seeing a interracial couple and I hope one day the same will come to people who are gay.

But I do agree with you to a point that of course individually it is a very big deal
on a personal level. I was glad it was not made a super big deal in the news or that he
got any guff for it. Sounds like support was all around as it should be
and that encourages more to do the same.

My feelings about this are in both camps - one side, I can see how others living a life of secrecy may be inspired to be comfortable in being, living as, who they are...other side, most people worth their salt won't and don't give a shit. I don't disagree and we'll likely never know how much of an impact it does play, if any. But today I would say there is a 100% chance Jason Collins has an NBA roster spot when next season begins. A week ago I would have said no better than 50%. He is just in that age bracket when the opportunities start drying up for middle of the pack veterans.
The guy is garbage as a player but now he's definitely getting another NBA deal. Some owner wants to be the groundbreaking owner who hired the first openly gay player. It's a good PR move for teams.
Hopefully after this though stars won't have to announce it and we won't have to act like we care and blow it up. Honestly it's no one's business and it shouldn't be news after this. Be comfortable and live your life. Let others live their lives and everyone wins.
