There's a reason for the vests, they're members of clubs. It's also for some protection while riding. The guys I know are mostly veterans and are members of military, firefighters etc.. clubs. Most of them only wear the gear when they go on mandatory runs. A lot of times it's for charities etc.
The yuppie bikers are another story...
Most of the bikers I've met so far are pretty nice guys.
The original question was about if guys really want an honest answer when they ask a question about themselves. Thanks to everyone for their responses.

I think it's best to be honest (as tactfully as possible) whether they want to hear the truth or not. They ask the question, they deserve the truth, whatever the answer might be. I think it's disrespectful not to tell the truth when someone asks you something (and completely useless) ... and if they're asking just to fish for compliment but get the opposite, good. It should be a good learning experience for them.
