finsbury 92 has to be the most intense, closely followed by atlanta 94. and lo2l solo is incredible. but my two favourites are - and i swear this is not bias talking - are dublin 2000 and 2006. 2000 is incredible slows down and spaces out like lo2l - until ed dives into the crowd and the band erupts into a fantastic climax. i was almost hoping they wouldn't play it this time around because I knew they couldn't top that... but they did. hugely extended solo because of the crowd singing the doo-doo-doo-doos, that the band just went with forever, and ed's "we belong together" has rarely been more moving and heartbreaking.

hey man, how are you? :D
Dublin was a pretty great version
I will have to check out some of the others people mentioned
y la banda de Guille... cuando toca?
  • Dublin's was awesome listening to the boot....so was indifference & better man...BUT my vote would have to go to Zurich, 1992. Really tight in the begining & emotional at the end...

I admit to being biased and... I agree :)

I think we managed to get the best version of Black EVER!!!!!

See my signature, that's what Ed said at the end... well I think, lol.
    The Astoria??? Orgazmic!
    Verona??? it's all surmountable
Dublin 23.08.06 "The beauty of Ireland, right there!"

SERIOUSLY, THIS IS THE BEST ONE

11 minutes of Black, the crowd is insane.

    PERFECT.
  • Out of the shows I've been to I like Black from St. Paul 27 June 06. It has the we belong together tag and some nice Mcready guitar work.

  • after reading all this, i guess it's pretty hard to find a fucked up version of black...
perhaps we all should agree that every version of black is just bloody brilliant
don't let the sun go down on your grievances...
  • Yeah, I've never seen a thread titled "Worst version of Black".

If you're trying to "convert" someone, I think the version you show them should depend on the person. If it's a guitar freak, you're gonna want a version with one of Mike's best solos (San Jose, definitely). If it's one of those people who thinks Ed can't sing, just play them the second verse of Unplugged. If it's someone who's used to extended live jams, pick a version with a long outro and lots of crowd interaction. But most people these days have a shorter attention span, so Unplugged or one of the shorter versions might work better.

Or you could just show them this thread. It must be a pretty good song to generate this many replies, right?
*Does not include encore of Garden and Leash.

Hamburg 2000! this was one of my first 'shiver' moments upon listening to bootlegs. i dont rate this version of Black as my fave, maybe not even top 10 but Hamburg 2000 does have i think my fave block of consecutive songs on any bootleg i have, and i have a fair collection :)

grievance, present tense, daughter/(i believe in miracles), porch, black, insignificance, rvm, crazy mary. specially from present tense to black its amazing on the boot

I can't believe no one mentioned St. Louis 2003. What Mike pulls off in the solo is really amazing, his best use of a delay pedal in his entire career. Listen closely to the song at around 6:10 till 6:35, it's really amazing.

I'm with you on that one!...I still listen to the boot constantly and think to myself I was lucky to see it live....I always played it for my ex-girlfriend and always jokes that you can hear me screaming and cheering on the boot...lol

  • I love TOKYO 2003, b/c ed throws in the F bomb on the "i know you'll be a f**kin star, in somebody else's...." just love that part.

I was at Ottawa 2005 and I didn't remember it being a huge standout over the other shows I have attended, but tonight I am def going to have a close listen. Love tokyo 03 & live on two legs, and of course mtv unplugged is #1

Although Eddie mess up the lyrics a little bit, the unplugged version is really cool,
I mean the "We belong toghether" part,... well it seems like he is singing with his heart in his hand
I agree this is the best version I've heard. Could possibly send it to you if you IM me.
