I'd specify a certain year... or at best a certain PJ "era" if I were you...... they've been playing the song for 15 years. I'm sure it's impossible to pinpoint the best version out of pretty much 20,000 times of playing it through the years :)

...... but just to help you out, I'd go with one from '92 to '94.
  • Although Eddie mess up the lyrics a little bit, the unplugged version is really cool,
I mean the "We belong toghether" part,... well it seems like he is singing with his heart in his hand

Completely agree. I have said this many times before on a number of posts, but of all the live versions of Black that I have heard, this is by far the most unique solo by McReady.

Try & find the bootleg titled "Anxiety" or look for the date of 11/4/95 & you will not be dissapointed. The entire show rocked!

If I had my bootlegs here at work I'd hook you up. That's been one of my favorite versions ever since I had it on tape probably 9 years ago. The version of Blood from that show, even though Ed's voice is beyond strained, is mind blowing.

Yes! Yes! Finsbury Park '92! Thank you! Someone else who agrees! Amazingly raw, strong & passionate version of the song. Eddie's voice at it's greatest in my opinion . . .

even if you were at the shows.. whatever.. there's no way a newer version of black can compare to when they used to play it around the time it was written.. i'd say quality wise mixed with the best performance of it you'll find is unplugged 92... also a nice way to convert i've found is Why Go from New Orleans '93.. its one of the best things ive ever heard

My vote is for Ottawa 05. As for the version from Nov 95, I have the bootleg as well. Does anyone notice that the entire boot is Mike "heavy". The way it was recorded, you can barely hear Stone at all. Listen to "Brain of J" during the solo, you don't hear anything except Mike playing the riff.
