San Jose, Ca. I dare anyone to find a better Black guitar solo than what mcready pulled off that day...
This cat is dead on. There are plenty of great versions, but this one is THE one.
If you had to apply to be a guitar god, this Black would be his submission for consideration. And, of course, his ticket in.

Ive not come across this version so cheers guys - was at the two BA shows so they'd have to get my nod.
But vocally the one on the Dissident single from Atlanta in 94 beats them all - shits on the MTV Unplugged version Id say.
As for the worst version - that'd be the one I sing round my mate's house at 4 in the morning after about 10 pints.

Anyone who thinks San Jose 95 is better than Melbourne 95 is kidding themselves. They're both at pearljamlive.com...go listen!
Since you are from Australia, I would assume you were at this show so maybe you feel this is a better version. I was at the San Jose show (but I have seen Black performed live many times before & after) & in my opinion, this is the best version I have heard either live or from bootlegs.
There are many great versions of this song and people have posted many from those shows, so it boils down to a matter of personal preferance.
I have stated why I think the San Jose 95' version is the best & until I hear Mike play the solo this way again, I will stick with this as my favorite version.
All of the ones listed are excellent, but as far as converting goes... you really can't go wrong with Benaroya. Hearing the crownd singing along with Eddie, then Mike busting out into the solo, it's some powerful stuff. It just slowly builds and builds from when Eddie lets the crowd sing. Eddie fading back in, awesome! Might not be the most complex or technical guitar solo, but damn you feel it.
Good thing with Benaroya is that sound quality isn't going to be an issue, where older bootlegs might be.
I can't believe that nobody's mentioned the version of Black on Rearviewmirror! That has to be the absolute best, especially considering that ur talking abt trying to convert someone to PJ. They have to hear the studio version first to really get a feel of the actual song before they sink their teeth into all the great live versions out there. Mike's solo on the live versions is always great but this particular studio version of the song is just outstanding coz of the almost inhuman growls by eddie at the end, which aren't as prominent on the Ten version. The guitar is also a little louder on the RVM version and eddie's voice is the best I've ever heard it. Nowhere else does he bring this level of emotion to the fore, it's almost as if he's crying at the end. It's the fadeout ending with the growls and guitar with piano in the background and the soulful "doo doo doo doo doo doo doo's" that combine to make this version Pearl Jam's finest musical moment IMO.

Hello to my namesake! And i completely agree, the RVM version of Black can't be beaten. The piano is also clearer in this version and it takes the song to new emotional heights. It's just perfect.
But, i'm off to listen to San Hose '95 because everyone keeps talking about it!
"This town deserves a better class of criminal... and I'm gonna give it to them."
I don't really know if it's the best, but the one at Bs As 1 was great! And the energy coming from the crowd makes it more intense...You should hear it at least!!
Uno es dueño de lo que calla
y esclavo de lo que habla.
Although Eddie mess up the lyrics a little bit, the unplugged version is really cool,
I mean the "We belong toghether" part,... well it seems like he is singing with his heart in his hand
I second this. And if your friend can get to WATCH the version its even better!
The benaroya one is gorgeous too.

What does the harvest moon sound like on that show? I was looking at the setlist and I never knew they covered that song. Its one of my favourite neil young songs.

Black from 6-18-92 is one of my favorites. i bout that boot for 50 bucks back in 97. it was the one that changed it all for me. the whole concert is amazing. thats just my opinion.
ok just listened to San Jose - yeah the solo is amazing, but the song isnt long enough, no crowd extension with do do doo's, and eddie's vocals arent up to scratch, not as intense as the 'top' versions of black, and he misses lyrics a couple of times. great version, but we're talking about the very best here.
that top ten list someone put up looked fine. if u wanted some from the binaural/riot act tours id listen to Dublin 00, Katowice II 00, Las Vegas 00, Philly 03 - solo to rival San Jose 95?, St.Paul 03,
but for top versions -
Unplugged
pretty much any version from late 93/early 94
Benaroya
LOTL
Melbourne 95 - one of a few versions with the 'hey oh's' at the end after the 'we belong together' tag
finsbury 92 has to be the most intense, closely followed by atlanta 94. and lo2l solo is incredible. but my two favourites are - and i swear this is not bias talking - are dublin 2000 and 2006. 2000 is incredible slows down and spaces out like lo2l - until ed dives into the crowd and the band erupts into a fantastic climax. i was almost hoping they wouldn't play it this time around because I knew they couldn't top that... but they did. hugely extended solo because of the crowd singing the doo-doo-doo-doos, that the band just went with forever, and ed's "we belong together" has rarely been more moving and heartbreaking.
