any award for art is a joke, totally disrespectful to all other artists in my opinion, especially when you have an award voted on by industry insiders who obviously have allegiances and are influenced, so the grammy's are a joke, a total waste of money and resources when there are people hungry and starving, just a big hypocritical bunch of nothingness, so glad Pearl Jam doesn't lower themselves to be part of the charade

I didn't know where to post this, but Dave put this on his Facebook page from this year's Grammys.

I'm not sure if anyone notices, but it looks to me like Paul is trying to grab Dave's Love Gun.

  • I guess i'll be the first one to say that this is one moment in PJ history that embarrasses me as a fan. If he felt so strongly about it, he should have stayed in his seat and kept his mouth shut. All that tortured artist shit back then was BS.

Just curious, why do you think that the Grammy's are such a bad thing? Besides that Eddie says so? It's a bunch of people reaching the pinnacle of recognition for their craft. Why be a hater, when you can just let other people have their fun at zero expense to you?

I could care less about the Grammys, the Oscars, the S.A.G awards, the I have been an actor a long time awards, the ESPYS, Individual sports awards shows, Country Music Awards, the World Music Awards, MTV awards. You get my point. It's all ego stroking bullshit.

Black Keys over Jack White and fun. over Alabama Shakes? The big award shows always play it safe thus making themselves irrelevant. I've been nominated for an Emmy 5 times and never won (lost to the same guy every year). But its honor just to nominated right? Yeah sure.

Unless everyone in the band felt the same way he did, he ruined the evening for his bandmates.
I cringe thinking about it. And I'd bet that if Ed had a flux capacitor, he'd go back in time and tell himself to chill.

glad to see Jack White show how rock still reigns supreme amongst all the crap there.
Beavis: All my friends are brown and red? What does that mean?
Butthead: It means that his friends are like turds and that they like suck.
Beavis: Heh heh. Oh yeah. Yeah! Get those spoons out of my face before I shove them up your butt!
    Butthead: Huh huh.

No doubt that JW stole the show for me. Saw him in LA last year with the Buzzards (boys) and loved it so much went the second night and saw the Peacocks (girls) from the 4th row. Saw almost 20 different concerts last year (including Missoula) and the Peacocks rock the most! Rest of the Grammy's was pretty vanilla in comparison.

Jeff -- yeah. I dont remember Stone saying anything about it aside from "Look! A Grammy!" :D
Ed explained he was agitated because he couldn't get out to smoke; that's why I feel he regrets it.

I am sure the band doesn't care they were making a move post Ten & Vs to be less commercial anyway, I have a feeling they booted Dave Abruzzese because of that, it seemed to me that he was trying to be the next Tommy Lee and I don't think that jived with the rest of the band who cared more about the music, but I could be wrong

Y'ou're probably right. And his message was right. I just questioned his timing.
Funny thing is the Music Video Channel, Grammys etc are 5x worse now than they were then.

watching this video, it seems like the rest of the band is jamming, and Dave seems more concerned with his rockstar image

And how things have changed....I bet they chuckle at those moments..Something tells me ed wouldnt mind going to some of those awards shows now...the podium..the celebs..the outlet..pretty sure he would do it with class and its all good... but he pretty much blackballed himself tho..

His Father would have liked it, I agree.
That is a huge part of an award, someone somewhere is proud,
even more than they thought possible.
And then someone gets to say thank you, thank you for all you have done, all you have been.
  • i think its interesting to note how culture has changed in those 17 years. Grunge was dead, and the world had moved on. The idea that mainstream culture had embraced grunge was laughable. Nowadays, the same indie culture that felt any success or fame or promotion was selling out, routinely hypes bands who have songs appear in tv shows, movies, and do press for major corporations. Justin Vernon essentially said what Ed did, last year, in a much less succint manner, but he does press for Bushmills, and few if any other than the Avalanches view him as a sell out.

I think since the 2000's those of us who love indie music have become more used to, and grown used to, bands we love becoming huge, winning awards, and still having integrity. Modest Mouse did a budweiser and minivan commercial, and The Shins did one for mcdonalds. If people dislike these bands it isnt because of those things.

I think the culture at large has changed, and become way more tolerant, and accepting of indie bands.

I'm sorry I'm not sorry, but Dave Grohl is such a sell out. The FF have some solid material, but I feel like they're so limited. Most of their stuff is just radio happy, written to be on the radio crap. They're much close to Nickelback than anything that's genuine rock n roll, say for instance Jack White. Maybe that's the consensus on here, maybe not. But, I feel like Dave Grohl gets a pass because he was in Nirvana. He's overrated.

  • I get why Ed said what he said but it was extreme and I think he has grown up since then. I get his point but he shit on everyone there and all the hard work that went into creating the show. It was.. too much. After all...Everything is art.

Movies are art.. so no Oscars
plays are art... so no tonys
TV shows are art... so no Emmys

Not allowed to have ice chainsaw sculpting competions or sand castle building competions because.. can't judge art.

snowman buildoffs are out. Can't give awards for art.

highschool homecomings will all be cancelled since we can't give an award to the best float. Its art.

Not to mention the Rock in Roll hall of fame which Ed seems to put a lot of stock in since he has inducted several people without ever once saying.. "this doesn't mean anything".

I guess that leaves strictly awards for math, science, and sports statistics. What a boring and shitty world that is.

Ed is smart enough to realize this in his old age as well. If he had won when he was nominated for into the wild.. he would of been much more gracious.
