As others have said, Al's Beef or Portillo's are great options. Definitely get it "dragged through the river".VespertineSun wrote:Okay, it's not really a hotdog or Italian beef place but you have to check out Kuma's Corner.1998: East Troy 2000: East Troy, Rosemont 2003: Champaign 2006: Chicago (UC), Milwaukee 2007: Chicago (Lolla) 2009: Chicago (UC), Chicago (UC) 2010: Noblesville 2011: East Troy (PJ20), East Troy (PJ20) 2013: Chicago (WF), Seattle 2014: St. Louis 2016: Chicago (WF), Chicago (WF) 2018: Chicago (WF), Chicago (WF) 2022: St. Louis 2023: Chicago (UC), Chicago (UC) 2024: Chicago (WF), Chicago (WF)2025: Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh0

Portillo's for both. Done and Done. BTW this is the place that is opening a store in Scottsdale, AZ because it ships so much product out to Arizona from ChicagoChicago 6/29/98, Alpine Valley(EV) 6/13/99, Alpine Valley 10/08/00, Chicago 10/09/00, Phoenix 10/20/00, Orlando 4/12/03, Tampa 4/13/03, San Diego 6/05/03, Vegas 6/06/03, Phoenix 6/07/03, Chicago 6/18/03, Alpine Valley 6/21/03, Orlando 10/08/04, D.C. 10/11/04, Chicago 5/16/06, Chicago 5/17/06, LA 7/12/08, Chicago 8/23/09, Chicago 8/24/09, LA 10/07/09, San Diego 10/09/09 (Front Row Center, Finally), Phoenix(EV) 11/4/11, Wrigley 7/19/13, Phoenix 11/19/13, Denver 10/22/14, Wrigley 8/20/16, Wrigley 8/22/160

Take a Prilosec and go to the nearest Dirty Water stand. It's all the same. Unless it's Hebrew National....
Those are tasty. I ate airport food, so I'm not a judge. I watched the food channel, I ate a Chicago pizza this year for my first time. I needed to take a nap, after one slice. Food induced Coma.....0 -

It's hard to screw up hot dogs or italian beefs in chicago. and the "best" is super subjective. what i feel is the best(on the southside) may not mean shit to a guy that lives up north.
even ballpark/stadium italians are solid, and you KNOW the quality is lesser at a venue of that size. Hell, when I went to yankee stadium, I had what I felt was the best ever pastrami sandwhich in my life, but I'm not stupid and realize that to a New Yorker, there's a 1000 places that serve pastramis ten times better than what the Steinbernners gave me....0 -

The vast majority of hot dog stands(either carts or brick and mortar stores) sell these bad boys:

And you can find palces that sell them here:

They are currently booked on all tours until 2014, but you can stop by the factory store(not super far from wrigley) and get pretty much anything they sell to eat in their cafe:

For hot dogs my top three are gene's and Jude's, portillos, and superdawg. Can't go wrong with any of them and they're all different from each other. Hot Doug's is good but more gourmet than a standard place.
Burgers- bad apple is a really great place, great beer variety, smaller burger selection but great. Kumas Corner or their second location closer to wrigley opening next week, kumas too. Best burger in Chicago and great beer selection.
Johnnies beef in Elmwood park is probably my favorite in the city followed closely by portillos.0 -
Man, both of mine have already been mentioned, but it can't be said enough: Portillos. Kumas. And a second nod to the new Kumas (Kumas Too) opening a block from me!!! If you find someplace with a pork chop sandwich, those are good, too.0

Superdawg is the best. Gene & Jude's is damn good too....love the fries wrapped up with the dog. We had Gene & Jude's as the late night food at my wedding in October...it was a huge hit.
Bad Apple is great. Great burgers and I love their poutine. And of course Kuma's is awesome. Happy they are opening up a second location...hopefully it will be easier to get a seat now.0 -

Portillo's is solid at any location... Dipped is the way to go. Al's is good too. But my personal favorite is "Johnnie's Beef" in Elmwood Park (near O'hare airport).
WOOO HOOO!!!!
Best beef on the planet!!!!
I live 5 minutes from this joint.Take me piece by piece.....
Till there aint nothing left worth taking away from me.....0 -
