A million times this! And now corporations are making it worse so they can show how 'bad' Obamacare is by pulling the plug on health insurance for their employees. When we got back from vacation, my husbands very large, very profitable, very well-known company announced plans to eliminate spousal health coverage - too expensive. Of course, I find that hard to believe after the tens of millions that were paid out in bonuses and stock options to the 6 heads of the various divisions within the company. Oh, and lets not forget the healthy quarterly dividends that are paid out to shareholders. Republican ploys to destroy a system of health coverage that they fought tooth and nail against.

"Conservative commentator Erick Erickson referred to Texas Sen. Wendy Davis (D) as an “Abortion Barbie” in a tweet on Tuesday afternoon, sparking outrage over the sexist implications of linking the female lawmaker with the famous Mattel product.
Davis recently rose to national prominence after filibustering an anti-abortion bill for more than 11 hours. Although Texas ultimately ended up enacting those sweeping abortion clinic restrictions, she has continued to advocate for reproductive rights in the state. Recently asked about Kermit Gosnell — an illegal Philadelphia-area abortion provider whose crimes are typically invoked in fights over additional abortion restrictions — Davis incorrectly said that his unsanitary clinic was already licensed as an ambulatory surgical center.
Erickson mocked Davis for mixing up her facts on Gosnell:
Davis was attempting to make the point that Gosnell’s crimes don’t apply to the new abortion restrictions in Texas, which require clinics to adhere to the same standards as ambulatory surgical facilities — an unnecessary rule that often forces clinics to make expensive updates, like widening their hallways. Abortion care in Texas’ clinics is already incredibly safe. The current regulations don’t allow clinics to commit the types of crimes that Gosnell did in his “house of horrors,” so his case is somewhat of a red herring.
This is hardly the first time that Erickson has incited controversy over a sexist statement. When he was a contributor for CNN last year, he said he liked the idea of excluding women from the Masters golf tournament because “I don’t want to be hanging out at some women’s event!” He also referred to the 2012 Democratic National Convention’s line-up of female speakers as “the Vagina Monologues” — prompting over 100,000 people to sign a petition calling on CNN to fire him. Nevertheless, Erickson went on to work for Fox, where he landed in the headlines again after saying that women should stick to raising children.
And more recently, Erickson has had plenty to say about Texas’ abortion battle. While Davis was engaged in her filibuster and her supporters tweeted under the “stand with Wendy” hashtag, Erickson started a “sit down, Wendy” hashtag in response. And after the legislature successfully passed the anti-abortion proposal — which threatens to close 90 percent of the abortion clinics in the state — he tweeted out a site selling coat hangers, telling liberals they should “bookmark” it."
Also in the news today, Republican leaders bemoan their inability to recruit republican women to run for office. They are about to make that term an oxymoron with this kind of crap!
Fox News appealing to their base about some punky kid on food stamps and you can't pick up on the obvious manipulation? I'm sure soon they'll have a story about one of their many viewers who receives unemployment, food stamps, gets paid cash under the table, and accuses immigrants of stealing from him.
I'm not sure calling this situation the 'Liberal dream' is fair. This amounts to abuse of a program that has good intentions. Does the 'Republican dream' include elders living on the streets foraging in dumpsters, out of work people kicked out of their homes, and troubled veterans left to their own devices?
I'm not sure if there are any programs that serve a strong purpose and do not exhibit characteristics of misuse. White collar abuse is rampant as well and has a much more profound effect on the integrity of society (look at the last Republican presidential candidate and his unethical and unpatriotic business exploits for example). Don't blame policy makers trying to do something positive... blame the people that abuse the programs.
I don't know what is out of touch of making an abled bodied person have to show they are at least trying to find work every three months to qualify for food stamps? Is that really out of touch?
Do you ever wonder why conservative news wants you to focus on the guy who is getting $2,400/year in assistance over the white collar criminals who are pocketing millions/year? Or the white collar tax cheats who are bilking the system out of millions/year?

The people working in the unemployment insurance offices are overworked as is.
The 'checks' and 'balances' you describe would demand an entireyly new branch of government for that purpose. The costs associated with such would far outweigh the costs attached to abuse.
I get frustrated with these types of scenarios as well, but let's be honest... these programs have value and are necessary. Let's place the blame where the blame should sit- on the losers that abuse them. And, while we're at it... let's feel good about the people who need assistance and are able to get it.

You do understand that saying implies the man is capable of fishing?
But even if he is not, does that man not have any other skill or value? Does he not have friends or family to help? Government assistance should be the option of last resort.

Friends and family financially supporting someone shouldn't really be the next best solution (especially not friends) ... If a citizen needs aid, then the government should have options available to them, not only to help the individual, but to help that family who probably already does try to help (or not... many people do not have such a support system; it's should not be an assumption of the government that they do).

I find it funny that I heard that some Republicans are kind of mad at Gov. Christie lately for doing what the people wanted instead of following the GOP agenda. He signed a medical marijuana legalization bill, an anti gay conversion bill, and a gun control bill, all of which goes against what the GOP believe.
Sorry that he is doing is job and listening to his people.
However, this also could just be a political push towards the white house, but regardless he is standing up to his party in a way. So good for you Gov. Christie.

Regardless of party, I wish more politicians would act on behalf of their constituents vs. their party's supposed pushes. Granted - and again, regardless of party - just about everyone jumps the shark when trying to get elected or re-elected but I do hope Christie's sincere in his expansion of current MM laws. If so, he's on the right track (plus the dude seems like he's hit several bongloads over the course of his life).
If people would just go the common-sense approach, most everything would fall quite nicely into place.
(although this, from a quick search, makes NO sense - "Christie told the Legislature that he would sign the bill if it stipulated that edible forms of marijuana would be dispensed only to minors, not to patients of all ages." Why the limit, Chris, WHY?)
[quote="gimmesometruth27"][quote="unsung"]Abortion kills more life than any so-called assault weapon.

I'm making a valid comparison on how much life is lost as compared to what the left perceives as the real issue. If you can't take honest debate don't create threads. Or at least state that you only want those that agree with you to reply.
Here are more stats.
In 2011 there were 2,513,171 documented deaths in the US.
.34% were gun related, about 8500. .012% were related to so-called assault weapons, about 300.
By comparison 1,210,000 abortions were performed in the US in 2008.
Keep telling me that guns are the problem. You always say that a person is a law-abiding citizen until they use a gun in a crime. By that logic a dr is law abiding until he performs an abortion, now he is a murderer.

Government assistance should be the option of last resort.
Do you have a problem with the fact that approx 50% of taxes are spent on the military? Or is it just tax money spent on the poor that makes you angry?
And how about the $6 trillion spent on two bullshit wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? Are you fine with that?
we have to spend that money on defense. we will never change our foreign policy, which is actually making us less safe, so we have to have the most badass military. you know, for defense.

You, a ___ year old, worked full time as a ____ while living with your girlfriend and child. One night you get in a car accident and sustain a traumatic brain injury. After recovery and rehab, you break up with your girlfriend and are forced to live with your daughter and your mother, who is now assisting with childcare. You are also now collecting SSDI ($1200/month) and Medicaid.
Fast forward one year – making progress and preparing for getting your own place and return to work. The $1200 that you learned to live off of is proving to be just enough to live and your medical assistance is needed for medications and doctors.
Options:
a. Get a part time/full time job that disqualifies you from benefits. (Also while dealing with symptoms). You may be able to make enough to gain independence but are basically forced to start fresh but with responsibilities of a child, bills, and other grownup things (that can't just be refreshed). b. Stay on the systems that you’ve gotten comfortable with living with “for now”.
Option A is usually the more respectable “American Way” but puts your finances, health, and living situation in jeopardy. Option B ends up feeling like a safer bet.
