I love our tip justifications :P

All this tip talk made me think of the Seinfeld when George was trying to replace an answering machine tape, and his desist code to Jerry was "tippy toe!"

I don't think Canada has the same waiters and waitresses make less than minimum wage thing. I've never been a waiter or waitress, so I can't confirm this, but they should make minimum wage like everyone else and in push me's territory that's about $10 an hour. Throw in tips and they're possibly making around $15 an hour.
  • no one by law in canada can make less than minimum. so the wait staff doesn't deserve more money by default just by profession in my opinion. the tip is a bonus if they are exceptional.

If someone wants to make their own personal statement by not tipping, that's their right. There is no law mandating tipping and there is no law punishing non tippers. The server can find another job if they don't like it. If someone chooses to try and make a living based off of gratuities they need to realize not everyone will subscribe to that. Also, they need to be prepared that as the government tries to tighten the noose around it's citizen's financial necks, especially the citizen's with the disposable income to eat out regularly, this may become more common place. For me, if it gets to the point where I really need to monitor my spending the first place I will cut spending is tipping. I still get the same goods I want, but I have also spent less of my money at the same time.

I see where you're coming from, but morally I just couldn't do it. I'd cut something else before cutting out tips.

    That's just me though

And that's your right to do so.

I find it ironic that liberal thinkers fully supported the Occupy Wall Street movement trying to take away people's rights to earn a living but when one individual here makes a statement it's a tragedy and they are a scumbag. Interesting. :?

Occupy had a lot of potential but was just fucked in the end... I did enjoy some of the quarrels between anarchist occupiers and the liberal occupiers.

Twitter was a really fun time last year.
  • All this tipping business made me put on Reservoir Dogs. Great scene at the restaurant. I'm with Mr. Pink on this one.

it depends on where i am, if i was in the states i would always tip because i know most of the wait staff aren't earning under minimum wage, however if im back in Ireland i would only tip if the service was good because they earn at minimum €8:50 an hour, unless im in the states or somewhere where tipping is expected i would never tip someone just for doing their job competently

why not get the fucking $25 steak and have some money left over, you know, just in case the server deserved a tip?

I agree with this. Moreover, I would never leave a note espousing my political or moral beliefs on a 3rd party who has absolutely nothing to do with my personal grievance. It's arrogant and speaks very poorly of the individual. Honestly, I've always held to the notion that a tip is for good service. If I'm treated well I'll leave a reasonable tip. If I'm treated poorly; I won't. Anything beyond that is simply rude.
