    this was a brilliant thread love it.... how are people on welfare scary and why should they be shamed? if a guy who was my neighbor has an arsenal of weapons next door I would want to know so I could move... who knows what would happen if he/she had a bad day...

    Would you feel ashamed if you were on welfare and it was public knowledge?
    Would you want people to know you are poor and struggling?
    Would you be able to look anybody in the eye?
    Do you think people on welfare are happy about it?

    Given the amount of identity theft in this electronic age, I don't think anyone should be posting names and addresses of anyone else online. Only exceptions being pedophiles and the Dutch. (Small hands, smell like cheese.)

    Wow! You can say that about anyone though. There are also many law abiding gun owners who never become criminals.

    Certainly that can be said about anybody, but a man armed with a gun is far more dangerous than a person who is not.

    I don't like the way people who aren't poor try to BULLY and mistreat poor people! It's probably difficult enough to be struggling to buy food without other people trying to pile extra shame on top! As if everyone who is poor is BAD or unworthy somehow.

    As I said, I don't think any names should be posted, but I don't like this bleeding heart stuff either. A little shame wouldn't hurt some folks. (And by some I mean some, not all, so don't take this the way you'd like to).

    To the OP: I really don't see the connection between someone receiving a welfare check and someone having an arsenenal in their bedroom. The first is a tragedy, the other one is dangerous. Or are you implying that people on welfare are a "danger"? In that sense, I think you are strecthing and holding a very narrow minded view of people on welfare.

    I btw rather fight with someone holding a welfare check than someone with a semi-automatic...

    So, I don't see the connection. In the same way I don't see the connection between pedophiles and Dutch people, but hey, that is just me...

    Well, I'm not sure if you read the news lately but there is this thing - for five years now - called an "economic crisis". People lose their jobs even if they a) want to keep it, b) have the talents to keep it and c) are well equiped to keep it, but they can't for the business they work for went bankrupt. Enhances the words "recession", "economic crisis" and "rise in unemployment". Or are you one of those people who believes that all people on welfare are in welfare because they choose to be there? In that case, check the facts.

    Welfare is a personal tragedy for everyone who has a family, a mortgage and just try to make a day-to-day living. Comparing welfare with guns is plain silly and, to be honest, narrow minded.

    Oh, no kidding. I'm not a gun advocate. I'm not a gun "opponent" or whatever folks want to call it. I would never own a gun. I think they are silly. But, I do believe in the Constitution, its Amendments, its processees and freedom. But, comparing the 2 is outlandish.

    That being said - Hurricane Sandy was a tragedy. Newtown was a tragedy. Having to pick yourself up off the mat while terrible is not a tragedy. It's what you make of it. Can you TURN it into a tragedy? I guess so. But, Welfare is a safety net meant to help people get back on their feet (at least that was the initial intent). That is not a tragedy. If anything, it could be seen as a triumph. What it's turned into by individuals is up to them for a majority (again, of course, not ALL). But, I find it hard to say Welfare is a tragedy.

    I see Help Wanteds all the time around me while folks collect 3 years of unemployment. It does make me scratch my head.

    Why can't it be 'Community Assistance' paid employment. A real job. People on welfare put 4 hours in daily in jobs designed at bettering their communities in one way or another?

    Time and some support afforded to these employees to find an occupation they are suited or trained for.

    This already is happening to different degrees, depending on the state, when someone is on cash public assistance (tanf).

    This was a very, very feeble attempt to downplay the story about the news outlet that published gun owners names. To say that since someone published gun owners names, they should publish names of people on govt assistance, is very immature.

    Not 12 million, but yes, I think there are a lot of folks not making the effort. Dinkins-Giuliani. You can either rationalize or take a job you think is "beneath you." Extending unemployment was a mistake. They should also shut down the gov't when the time comes. As I said - I see plenty of job openings. Maybe, not enough. But, it would be amazing if you cut the baby from the teat what would happen.
