months ago the gop tried to stop the military cuts. even after the supercommittee agreed to them.

  • An emergency unemployment-compensation program is expiring, which would save $26 billion but end payments to millions of Americans who remain jobless and have exhausted state benefits. Medicare payments to doctors would be reduced 27 percent, or $11 billion, because this year Congress has not passed the usual so-called “doc fix” to block the cuts, which otherwise are required by a 1990s cost-control law.

    No more unemployment checks.

doctors will stop taking medicare eventually with those reimbursement cuts. i know the docs i work with have stated they will consider cutting back on the amount of medicare they see.

    Ok gimme.

YOU are one of the FEW people here, who I truly trust. I enjoy reading your posts. I DO NOT always agree with you, but I believe you speak "the truth" as far as YOU see it.

Tell me what you see happening in the next couple of weeks.
How is this situation going to be addressed?
I can not claim to be an expert here, and I am quite sure YOU know more of this situation than I do.
So please educate me here. What can I expect to read/hear in the next couple of weeks?
    Thank you.

i am not sure what you are asking. are you talking about medical specifically or are you asking about everything? for the sake of brevity here i will tell you what is going to happen for sure if no agreement is reached. the tax increases and closed tax loopholes that you mentioned are going to happen for sure. the cuts to programs and the military are going to happen for sure. the things that the supercommittee agreed to are going to happen for sure.

regarding taxes, what i see happening is we go over the cliff, everyone gets a tax increase, everyone is going to be fucking pissed and congress will eventually reach a short term scaled back agreement to re-set tax rates to bush levels for those making under $400,000. i think everything else is going to be addressed as individual bills. that way both parties can save a little bit of face by being able to claim that they compromised on some things and blame the other party for not compromising. it is politically expedient.

as far as healthcare goes, doctors on the whole really like medicare. they know that even though they will not get paid very much, they will get paid eventually. with private insurance, collecting money is like pulling teeth. private insurance companies will try to escape with paying for as little as they can and pass the remainder on to the patients. and most of our patients can not afford the remainder so they end up in collections and we never see that money. medicare patients are generally old or disabled and they are not easy patients to care for because they have chronic health conditions that makes standard treatment options less likely to be as effective. for us, an orthopedic practice, it makes them more difficult to treat, more time is required to treat them, more headaches with medicare approval to treat them, and many specialists are going to conclude that treating them with a 27% cut in reimbursement is not worth the effort to treat them.

do you have any specific questions or will that suffice for now?

by no means am i an authority on any of this. but given this congress' historical inability to work together, i do not see a huge fiscal cliff deal happening. i see a few minor temporary stopgap measures happening only after the new year, but it is still going to damage our economy. tax increases, unemployment benefits being cut, food costs going up, and no jobs bill being passed is going to hurt us in a big way. if jobs bill had been passed we would not need to pay so much in unemployment, but now that that is going away it is going to hurt a lot of families out there. it is really sad. the american people want compromise, but congress won't.

    my prediction

during the 11th hour democratic and republican circle jerk, a simple but temporary tax law will be enacted that restores some of the set to expire tax increases, the who and what specifics will be masturbated over whereby "both" sides will be able to claim "victories"...as a side show personal "entiltements" will be cut...there will be no mention or action taken against corporate "entitlements" or "war" spending

not sure what will be done about underwater homes
not sure what will be done about real unemployment
not sure what will be done about stagnant wages
not sure what will be done about rising costs of living

how is it big government when sequestration is going to cut a lot of spending? especially on "entitlements"..

You do realize that these so called cuts are nothing but a reduction to a spending increase, right? There are NO cuts being made.

    and again.

What will take place the next few days/weeks?

On Sunday night, the increased taxes on folks making $1 million or more will be passed, everything else will be put off for the new session, and we will see the battle begin anew in February as we approach the debt ceiling again (though I can also see the concession that this round of debt ceiling raising gets through, so Obama can claim somewhat victory, and the can can be kicked until next December).

And, while everyone will claim victory, they are all the cause of this. It's a big game of chicken, and unfortunately, we are the ultimate losers. I won't cut spending. I won't raise taxes. Let's stare each other in the eye and do the minimal to effect each of our constituencies, so we can all get re-elected and continue with our own largese.

As I'm sure is no surprise to anyone that reads my post - we need to cut spending, or you can raise taxes all you want and we're still in deep doo-doo. The Republicans are more (not totally by any stretch) in the right here. It can't just be reductions in future spending which can easily be undone by tack ons to future bills. It has to be immediate cuts that reduced spending across the board. Without that, I agree with them - why spit in the ocean? Thus, going over the cliff is the right thing to do. Every expense reviewed. Every tax reviewed. Every person effected. Not pick and choose which pimple to pop.
Sorry. The world doesn't work the way you tell it to.

what im most impressed with is how mobilized we americans are...i mean whats worse than going over a cliff. this will have long lasting effects on us all, black white, brown, green yellow, rich, poor, freeloader, etc. so many are taking to the streets as one, so many are gathering to discuss resolutions as one, the entire country has united to stop the car from going over the cliff. we truly believe that this is real and we truly believe that it will be even worse than it already is so much so that we are moved to act. its great to be an american, its times like these that make me be proud to be american.

Gimme, I can't walk out of a Ferrari dealership without a car and claim I saved $300k. Same logic applies here.

Sarcasm duly noted. Though, you have proved the genius of the framers once again. And one of our great faults in trying to create other democracies around they world. The difference b/w them and us is that they don't have any Jeffersons, Franklins, et. al. like we were lucky enough to have.

what about cutting the pentagon budget equates to saving money by not increasing spending, when the pentagon and military budgets are going back to less than what they are now?

    it is simple math.

i don't think we are counting the money the gop wants to give the military that is over and above what the military is asking for as savings.... :fp:

It's not up to the "U.S. Government"

its the U.S. House of Representatives that are holding things up
actually to be more specific its the teabaggers in the house that are holding things up

    it will get done
just not as timely or as easily as we average Americans would like
