Since taking a toddler to the show is the new "thing"

Since some of you have decided that taking a 3-5 year old to the show is your best way to meet Mr. Vedder. Since you have decided to make stalking a "family outing". I have decided that for the next tour I am going to rent this young lady and her toddlers. No way can Mr. Vedder not sign my poster!

I was just kidding with my wife the other day after going to Jax 1 that we need to take our 7-yr-old son to the next EV show and have him hold up a sign that says "Mr. Vedder, can I get Olivia's digits?"

Think "Eddie: My daughter was at a Pearl Jam show in utero and shares your birthday. Coincicidence? I think not." would fit on a cute hand written sign and get results? I could write the R's in capital and backwards for better effect.

  • I saw this line of comments in the other thread (about guy who waited outside in ORL and got mad he didn't get to touch E.V.) and now here. As a father of a 5 and 3 year old, I actually toyed with the idea of bringing my 5 y.o. daughter to a show in JAX and ORL last night, not to use as a tool to meet E.V. or anything, but to bring her to something cool she would remember forever and we could share together. Ultimately I decided it was too late for her and that some of the logistics would be odd (i.e. if she had to go to bathroom, or she got bored, etc.). My 3 y.o. would last 5 minutes then start looking for his dinosaurs, so that would be a horrible decision. If people truly are using their kids to try to get close to E.V. or whatever selfish reasons, then there is something disturbing there, but if they are just trying to really bring their kid into something special and share important memories with them, I don't see anything wrong with bringing kids of appropriate ages.

Bringing a 3-5 year old is just not appropriate. Right? Thats why you made that decision not to bring them. At an Eddie Vedder show ADULTS will be acting like Adults (well so to speak..I guess that can be argued...hehehe). There will be booze served, there will be marijuana lit up, there will be harsh language(Direct from Eddie Vedders mouth). There is NO REASON at all to bring a toddler to these shows. The ONLY reason I see people doing it, is so that Ed may notice the child, and the ADULT can meet Ed.

  • I would agree, that's the conclusion I reached and the pot was burning close by last night and several stories totally inappropriate for toddlers told last night with curse words, quite a few stories about pot from E.V. last night were humorous though, of course there were a few assholes that yelled from the crowd when E.V. said anything quasi-political (seems there always are in Florida at any PJ show I see).

It's amusing to see parents hoist their kids onto their shoulders just as the band starts playing RITFW. I mean, it absolutely works because it gets Ed's attention when he's scanning the crowd up front.

Despite my quasi-agreement with your sentiment, I'd argue with you.

On my run of shows this tour, I saw a number of toddlers (probably in the 5-9 range) at the shows, and the kids were genuinely interested in the music... and not the pearl jam music, the ITW and Uke Songs music. Usually the only Pearl Jam song that they responded to was Just Breathe.... which I also get... My theory is that the kids are probably subjected to the music at bed time.... but anyway...

I'm sure, when I have my kids, I'd probably take them to an Ed solo show... probably not a PJ show until they're older (teens), if the band still exists by then... but anyway, for the most part, I found the atmosphere to be very controlled, versus stadiums.... yes there were people drinking and there was swearing, but to be quite honest, I'm sure I'm going to do that shit at home so what difference does that make? as for the minute amount of pot that i did get a whiff of, well, that's another story. If it was coming from the seat next to me, yea, that would be a problem... but i'd like to hope that if someone saw me there with my toddler they'd have some resect, or i'd just call over security... when i used to smoke pot, if someone asked me to stop while I was at a show for whatever reason i would... if I saw a young kind in a seat next to me, i'd just not bother to smoke it, or go outside to the smoking section...

All that being said, using your kids to try and meet eddie... that's just low, and a complete different situation. if the kid didn't want to go see the music, I wouldn't take them... and they'd certainly be going straight home and to bed afterwards... not waiting around to be used as a tool to get an autograph....

  • taking your kid to an acoustic show with seats is ok...
taking your kid after the show waiting hours and use it for eddie see you..its lame and bad parenting..

as for cursing...well,isnt bad if you think u can take your kid to a sport game and the guy next to u will yell for 2 hours the word asshole.same the next driver to a parking lot..or even worst go to a movie and a fuckin lunitic will get a machine gun and start shooting..
you need to protect your children but the same time not to make the kid to fear his/her shadow..
common sense..and all will be ok..

I disagree. A 5 year old should not be at an Eddie Vedder concert.
Adults will be drinking, adults will be smoking dope, adults will be loud, and Eddie himself, will be talking like a truck driver.

Not a place for a 5 year old.

So are you going to tell Eddie he shouldn't be taking his own kids to his show? As it seems the last few nights they've been handing him his guitars...

I don't know if there's a particular age cut off but kids just shouldn't be at concerts when they're that young. A sit down acoustic show might be good for kids a little older... 7, 9, 11 etc... Don's kid sure seemed to enjoy himself in ABQ that's for sure. :) He was not 5 though. He was mature enough to handle an almost 4 hour concert. That's the cut off I guess!

Besides the fact that LITTLE kids get bored easily, it's also rude to the people around you to have a toddler at a concert. They're going to be asking to get something to drink, go to the bathroom, playing with dinosaurs like someone said etc... I don't care how much they might enjoy the music, they can listen to it at home. I plan on taking my kid to concerts when he is much, much older. Full on Pearl Jam show... maybe when he's 8. :)
