I dont know.
If I worked at Walmart, and they told me I had no choice but to work Thanksgiving Day...
I might have to tell the Boss to go to Hell.

Walmart is now going to be open Thanksgiving Day?
Seriously?
They cant wait till Friday to start the Holiday Shopping?
Why the fuck would they ruin their employees Thanksgiving Day by opening?

I dont know...

    I thought the same thing.
But I see and hear the BIG news that Walmart will start Black Friday early this year, by opening on Thanksgiving Day.

    Either way.
Forcing Americans to work Thanksgiving Day is just wrong in my eyes.

Hopefully it is volunteer with holiday double time
that's the way it has been at our shop when we have been swamped.

I wonder if Thanksgiving is changing with it not being as much of a family day.

I've never done Black Friday and shopping on our Thanksgiving will never happen
but both my kids have gone to the after midnight sales and JB is an early riser
on Friday for the sales. I don't buy much and rely a lot on the web.

Shopping doesn't appeal as much to me since I've gotten older.

I would hope they earn golden time at the very least.

I would also hope that Americans are spending time with there families, getting fat on Turkey, and watching football. I don't know if this speaks worse of Walmart, or our society.

  • I never have gotten the whole "Black Friday" thing.
    I just dont get it.
Doesnt look like something I would enjoy.

Actually it looks like nothing but torture!

A store has 10 TV's marked down half price.
So 3,485 people line up in front of the store, waiting for the doors to open Friday at 3am.
Just so they can all run into that store, and beat the living hell out of each other, and walk away with one of those 10 TV's.

    Wait a second..
Black Friday might be one hell of a good time!

    it keeps the masses distracted
  • Black Friday?

    My Friday after Thanksgiving?

Go back to Mom's, Dad and I drag all the leftovers out, we make plates of food that believe it or not, are bigger than the plates of food we ate the day before. Then dad sits in his lazy boy, I sit on the couch, we grab the TV remote and say, "There has to be a college game on somewhere", eat our food, and pass out 15 minutes later.

    1. because they can
    2. because people want "stuff"
  • Yeah I think it's fucked. Enjoy the holiday. You know I love to shop Speedy, but not on Black Friday unless it's an online sale. Black Friday is for relaxing, eating leftovers, going to the town's tree lighting and putting up the Christmas decorations :) A lot of my students work retail and working Black Friday is a requirement, not an option.

A lot of us back in High School worked retail, and I am sure there are others here, who still work retail. Working the day after Thanksgiving, working Christmas Eve, and maybe working New Years Eve, is just a given. It is part of working retail, right? But Thanksgiving Day is Thanksgiving Day! Give those workers the day off.

I hear you Dimi...I've had to do this too and Tim will also because the group homes never close...there are some jobs where it really is necessary, but I don't think shopping till you drop on a holiday is a necessity.

Best retailers to work for are suppose to be Costco and Apple...thats from people I've spoken who work at these places. I try to do as much shopping at Costco...here in Canada the employees are treated well...so i'm told and they never open holidays...anyone worked at these place? is it true?

It breaks down to supply and demand. The companies can sell 100's of TV's or 10 and the latter will have more people pushing to get them early and while they are there and dispondent they will spend money to feel better about themselves and get passed the feeling of let down when they dont get that TV.

I love Thanksgiving more than any other Holiday because for me it is about family. I think that all stores, gas stations, and any other business should be closed for the celebration of the country and our families. But it only takes 1 person to stay open to make everyone else do.

    HAPPY THANKSGIVING! :D

A poster mentioned if this speaks to our society,
I believe it does much more than the business who chooses to be open.
Black Friday has started earlier each year really not surprising it's starting
the evening before. Where there is demand there is an answer for it.

Thanksgiving in the future generations may not have the importance
but I will hang onto tradition

sadly people are squeezed so tightly they feel the need to run out to save money they dont have. its an endless cycle.
example of the squeeze: decreased wages (work more for less $), food, transportation costs, healthcare costs (pay more get less)

    "Black Friday" is racist!

I worked retail in the 80s and was there for the holidays...people were like fucking animals just trying to get IN the store, let alone how they acted once they entered. Totally turned me off to the whole "shopping" experience - online's the way I roll now!

I wonder how much business they'll actually do on that day? Hope the folks working get some nice OT.

I don't see the big deal. I mean it is not like walmart is the only store open. People who work at say Denny's or 7-11 have to work. Gas station employees probably do to, and google tells me that some McDonald's are open. Why should walmart be any different.

Not sure if that is sarcasm.

My wife works there. She gets a good wage, good health insurance, paid holidays and vacation, bonuses and the company gives her stock.

She volunteered to work late on Thanksgiving.

Ever been to a walmart? There is a special place in hell for the people that work there.

Honestly, I don;t really have a problem with it. My wife and I disagree about this type of thing often. Black Friday can be family time too.

Nothing is sacred anymore. Not even a national holiday.

A truly disgusting example of greed and intimidation by Wal-Mart towards their employees.

In 2011 six members of the Walton family have the same net worth as the bottom 30% of American families combined.
    Nice shirt.
