Her remark was offensive to me, as I picture the dear faces of those I work with. Those who tell me they're already excited about camping next year, the savant who can tell me what day of the week ANY date in any month falls, instantly; the girl with Down's who likes doing the kickboxing routines, the girl on hand canes who ALWAYS is excited about the next holiday, the woman in a wheelchair, with the use of one arm, who excitedly talks about reading, and going to bingo, or a Randy Travis concert. The class gives me way more than I give them. What has Ann ever contributed to help someone? I can't tolerate a derogatory word like this used for my friends.
We have a savant who comes into work once in a while. One day, he told me and my manager that he can tell us what day we were born if we told him our date of birth. So we did. He got my manager's, she checked and he was right. I already knew mine, so I gave him my date of birth. He got it. We were shocked.

Why exactly is it wrong to use the word retard to insult someone but using the term moron, which in the past was a medical term also used to describe someone with developmental disabilities, is acceptable? If both words denote the same thing shouldn't both be considered offensive?
For that matter why is it ok to use the word crazy to insult people. Isn't that insulting to people psychiatric disorders?
