An Open Letter to Ann Coulter

Dear Ann Coulter,

Come on Ms. Coulter, you aren’t dumb and you aren’t shallow. So why are you continually using a word like the R-word as an insult?

I’m a 30 year old man with Down syndrome who has struggled with the public’s perception that an intellectual disability means that I am dumb and shallow. I am not either of those things, but I do process information more slowly than the rest of you. In fact it has taken me all day to figure out how to respond to your use of the R-word last night.

I thought first of asking whether you meant to describe the President as someone who was bullied as a child by people like you, but rose above it to find a way to succeed in life as many of my fellow Special Olympians have.

Then I wondered if you meant to describe him as someone who has to struggle to be thoughtful about everything he says, as everyone else races from one snarkey sound bite to the next.

Finally, I wondered if you meant to degrade him as someone who is likely to receive bad health care, live in low grade housing with very little income and still manages to see life as a wonderful gift.

Because, Ms. Coulter, that is who we are – and much, much more.

After I saw your tweet, I realized you just wanted to belittle the President by linking him to people like me. You assumed that people would understand and accept that being linked to someone like me is an insult and you assumed you could get away with it and still appear on TV.

I have to wonder if you considered other hateful words but recoiled from the backlash.

Well, Ms. Coulter, you, and society, need to learn that being compared to people like me should be considered a badge of honor.

No one overcomes more than we do and still loves life so much.

Come join us someday at Special Olympics. See if you can walk away with your heart unchanged.

This is an excellent letter only I would disagree with the very first sentence.

I pointed this out on what she said in another thread, however at least she didn't say he was a useless piece of shit. ;) I think she just doesn't care other than to prop herself above the frey in her mind.

Ann Coulter is a caricature. She is not a real person... she is more of a persona.
Sure, her right leaning tendencies may be true, but her over the top antics are just a means for her to earn a living... a very lucrative living.
Her real job... selling books to morons that actually buy into what she is selling.
She just jumped on the same gravy train that Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh ride towards the 1%. Book Sales=$$$ Ratings=$$$ Sponsors=$$$
    ...
    It really is... that simple.

so ... someone who apologizes for his comment and basically calls it the lowest he's ever felt about himself is the same as someone who fails to recognize the offensiveness of her comments?

Schultz acted like an ass when he said that. That said, I doubt Coulter will offer anyone anywhere such an apology.

I saw this on another site. Love it. What a mature, articulate and brave young man. My daughter has DS she's an incredible gift not only to me, but to this world.

The Ann Coulters of the world are looking for one thing - publicity. It doesn't matter if it's good or bad, as long as they get attention to make up for the lack of self love and self-esteem they don't have in their lives.

I teach fitness classes to the developmentally disabled. I wonder if Ann has ever met anyone with a developmental disability? Her remark was offensive to me, as I picture the dear faces of those I work with. Those who tell me they're already excited about camping next year, the savant who can tell me what day of the week ANY date in any month falls, instantly; the girl with Down's who likes doing the kickboxing routines, the girl on hand canes who ALWAYS is excited about the next holiday, the woman in a wheelchair, with the use of one arm, who excitedly talks about reading, and going to bingo, or a Randy Travis concert. The class gives me way more than I give them. What has Ann ever contributed to help someone? I can't tolerate a derogatory word like this used for my friends.
