How the fuck are these people in power. I'm in utter, utter shock. I'd be fucking embarrassed if this horses ass represented me, but I'm sure some of you will make excuses for him.

I don't care what anyone says the religious right or the fundamentalist republicans are the issue in this country going forward. They have no place leading this country. We need people that are going to be at the very least moderate and able to move on important issues.

What upsets me the most is that these extremists are taking over Christianity. I feel like they're getting regular Christians all up in arms saying the liberals are attacking their beliefs and convincing people that they will go to hell if they don't oppose every single thing liberals believe in - from health care to science to PBS. I grew up in a Christian family in the Bible Belt and I don't recall being taught that science is evil. But these crazy beliefs are being propagated at an alarming rate because a few extremists are preying on the fears of regular people. And those people go out and vote. It's scary. And sad. And not really representative of Christianity, IMO.

    Couple of really worrying things;

    - Broun, a medical doctor
    - running for re-election in November unopposed by Democrats.
    - he believes the Earth is about 9,000 years old and that it was made in six days
    - He sits on the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology.

THE HOUSE COMMITTEE ON SCIENCE SPACE AND TECHNOLOGY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He's running unoppossed for fuck sake.

I agree with "__" and Moonpig. This shit is frightening.
The worst part about it is that faith never has to rest with fact or logic; that's the definition of faith. Also, people's faith simply lies in the luck of where they were born and the family they were born into. Faith is a result of this luck and not a result of investigation. Nobody investigates and studies religions and then chooses one that fits their core beliefs. We are born into a religion and that is it. I know I am not including converts, but what percentage of the religious population do converts represent? 1%? less than 1%?

These same devout Christians--since this is the topic of the thread--if they were born in Calcutta, they would be Hindu; if they were born in Jakarta or Kabul they would be Muslim; if they were born in Cambodia they would be Buddhists.

So, all of these individuals are foaming at the mouth devout for a religion, a set of beliefs, that they did not choose, but instead one that they were born into, and even further, conditioned into.

And, there are many levels of conditioning. This one that the congressman is espousing is another level--a very scary level.

Watch them both get elected. Keep in mind: this is a Christian nation that inconveniently also has Jews, Hindus, Muslims, Buddhists, atheists, and agnostics, to name a few, living in it.

What makes this country so great is everyone gets to vote on who they want to represent them in Washington.

Jesus is about love. People on this earth may not be and some may not represent the Christian faith in that way but for you to post those pictures is racist.

Racist? It is a jab at those who view Jesus in that light. It's in the same vein as "Jesus, save me from your followers."
It is a dig at adherents of Christianity who manipulate the teachings of Jesus to fit their own needs.

It is an attack on delusional people, not on Jesus himself. And, I don't even know if Jesus existed.

    But seriously, RACIST?

Is that really what you think makes America great? Personally, I can think of a lot more things that are great about America than the fact that every four years you get to choose between two different puppets of big business to drive the political wagon.

As for uneducated, or simply delusional, people, being able to lend their support to religious wackjobs, and so further contribute to the dumbing down of American society, I see nothing positive in this at all.

perhaps that congressman should take a tip from the 4th/5th century theologian, Saint Augustine, who basically said, "don't be so censoredn.gifing stupid"...but with more words....

"Usually, even a non-Christian knows something about the earth, the heavens, and the other elements of this world, about the motion and orbit of the stars and even their size and relative positions, about the predictable eclipses of the sun and moon, the cycles of the years and the seasons, about the kinds of animals, shrubs, stones, and so forth, and this knowledge he hold to as being certain from reason and experience. Now, it is a disgraceful and dangerous thing for an infidel to hear a Christian, presumably giving the meaning of Holy Scripture, talking nonsense on these topics; and we should take all means to prevent such an embarrassing situation, in which people show up vast ignorance in a Christian and laugh it to scorn. The shame is not so much that an ignorant individual is derided, but that people outside the household of faith think our sacred writers held such opinions, and, to the great loss of those for whose salvation we toil, the writers of our Scripture are criticized and rejected as unlearned men. If they find a Christian mistaken in a field which they themselves know well and hear him maintaining his foolish opinions about our books, how are they going to believe those books in matters concerning the resurrection of the dead, the hope of eternal life, and the kingdom of heaven, when they think their pages are full of falsehoods and on facts which they themselves have learnt from experience and the light of reason? Reckless and incompetent expounders of Holy Scripture bring untold trouble and sorrow on their wiser brethren when they are caught in one of their mischievous false opinions and are taken to task by those who are not bound by the authority of our sacred books. For then, to defend their utterly foolish and obviously untrue statements, they will try to call upon Holy Scripture for proof and even recite from memory many passages which they think support their position, although they understand neither what they say nor the things about which they make assertion."

--Saint Augustine (A.D. 354-430) in his work The Literal Meaning of Genesis (De Genesi ad litteram libri duodecim) provided excellent advice for all Christians who are faced with the task of interpreting Scripture in the light of scientific knowledge. This translation is by J. H. Taylor in Ancient Christian Writers, Newman Press, 1982, volume 41.

    Here's another guy that says

"“… the institution of slavery that the black race has long believed to be an abomination upon its people may actually have been a blessing in disguise."

Not sure how any asshat thinks that slavery was a blessing in any way, shape, form or fashion. It is terrifying to me that we have so many citizens who a.) don't care about political elections or b.) vote based on one issue (whatever that issue may be). Our country is better educated now than at any time in the past yet we keep making stupid, senseless, and borderline dangerous political choices. It's time for the American populace to WAKE UP!

Here's a link to the entire article where he makes even more stupid assertions:

People do not see eye to eye, they do not agree.
That is the beauty of our world. People can and do believe what they want.

Should they be judged by some because of that?

Are they free from fault or are they clearly at fault for judging?

Pandora, this is someone making assertions that are false, much like the previous fellow making the rape claim. That they represent anyone is insane, let alone the committee that they are a part of.

They are running unopposed so it is certainly suspect around how many they truly represent.
