I thought this would be a good subject here on the Train. Tickets for the event via attending the convention are $2,395. A client of Oracle just happens to be Monsanto. Definitely not the band they once were...

I don't know much about Oracle and obviously need to do some reading up...but $2,395 tickets?

    Yeesh!

I've been thinking lately about where (or do we even) draw the line in terms of companies, their stances, who supports them, who doesn't - and our resulting judgments and actions.

This should make for an interesting discussion!

I'm not as surprised as I was with the whole Target deal and privately playing for that company party, once you start, I suppose private corporate gigs become common place as long as the pay is big, I suppose.

But, boy has the band gone 180 degrees on their corporate values of yesteryear! And Monsanto being a client.... I just have no words for that...

i read all 7 pages to date on the other thread you linked to ...

i gotta say myself ... i'm disappointed ... i understand the economics and the times we live in ... but the reality is they have certainly changed ... i'm still very much an idealist ... so, it kinda sucks to me ...

i will rethink this in february when my membership expires ... if i had a shitty number - it would be a no brainer ... but hard to give up the one i have ...

it's a kick in the face for their fans I think.. also I hate that corporate America has bought this band. SF area needs a couple of REAL PJ shows.

Good thing I've never idolized the band and thought the sun shone from their arse. Just bloody good musicians putting out great music (most of the time) and great live gigs.

They have a job - one they seem to really like, mind you - they do their job. They can see how certain gigs may benefit them. What the hell - they are people like you and me (but more talented, richer, etc.). I'm thinking that most here wouldn't bat an eyelid if their job required them to do a presentation at some greedy corporation if it could further their career.

That doesn't stop them from 'doing good' and that shouldn't be discounted. Too many people getting their nose put out by these things (such as target...).

I am not understanding how monsanto applies here?

They are getting paid to play a show that is an appreciation show for their customers. Tom Petty and Sting played last year.

I see absolutely nothing wrong with this decision. As far as I know they haven't come out in support of Monsanto's business practices...when that happens...maybe then it would be ok to complain about the band...

oracle supports many different types of businesses...they are a networking company...

I'm more upset that they'll play a show like this and not a regular show. Disappointing.

If people are upset, that is the best reason. If this was on the tail end of a 30+ US tour, I don't think it would be a big deal (although everyone would still complain :ugeek: ).

As for Oracle and who they provide services to, I'll bet this website has Oracle components and technology associated with it. They are one of the Big 3 along with Microsoft and IBM and they provide methods for us to magically trash them on the web. :)

I like the music, I couldn't care less about the politics. It's entertainment to me. Just like sports, and I'm sure 99% of my favorite athletes have completely opposite political views of me considering the amount of money they make.

I get why people are upset and I understand that music is inherently more political than sports, but I just don't have the energy to get worked up about something like this.

I would like a full blown tour next year though. If not, then I would start getting upset.

    thing is ...

there was an idealism to pearl jam ... i am not part of any other fan club nor do i respect any other celebrity / athlete / etc as much as i did pearl jam ... that idealism is in their songs through and through ... if anyone is gonna stick to an idealism - i would think it's a rock and roll band that has already made a small fortune ...

i know that these guys give a lot of their money to groups and i don't discount the amount of charity work they do as a band or personally ... but there is a part of me that believes that whatever money they are getting for this concert whether it be pure fee or to charity isn't worth the association with a corporate entity ...

Hmm ... I wonder if there is any way I can convince my boss to send me to this event

It's not really my field, but with Oracle being so massive, there must be someway to spin it.

I have to say, I take much of what they say (actually, what most folks nowadays say, I suppose) with a grain of salt. We saw them in San Diego in 2002 or 2003. Great show - understatement! - as always. But I felt like something was...off...when Ed gave the singer Jewel shit for her Intuition razor commercial, yet he's had no problem with the Who providing their music to commercials and television.

Like inlet said, we ARE all hypocrites. Maybe some more than others, or some more consistently than others, but we all are to some degree. We choose which politics we want to pay attention to, which companies we want to boycott. (edit - and the ones we decide aren't worth our attention)

    Cherry-picking.

(btw, I wonder if Oracle will have the concert streamed?)

I don't know if they have the technology to pull it off. ;)

It would be a slap to the face if they didn't.

I think people may not like to admit this...they have a lot of money, they like money, they are addicted to money...they have a certain lifestyle to maintain...in order to maintain that lifestyle they need money...a big difference between them and a lot of other bands is that they now seem to want to do less work and still continue to be handsomely paid.

Yeah, right. Especially seeing that in the past two years they will have played a total of 7 shows in the U.S., 3 of them being festival shows, 1 being a political benefit concert, and 1 being a corporate gig. Makes me wonder where the future is heading...
