:( I'm sorry to hear this, but on the bright side, there is a lot of good advice in this thread. Samjam is right, depression is horrible, but it is so common and there are so many who can relate, and that you can talk to, including just about everyone on the board. Keep hanging in there, things will improve and get better!

Whenever I feel down, question the path Ive chosen, or feel like engaging in self destructive behavior, I just watch 10 minutes of the Jerry Springer show. It helps me realize just how good my life actually is.
Then I watch some stand up comedy. It forces me to laugh. Trust me it helps.
Thank you all.
Felt better yesterday and most of today.
It's like it comes and goes, Monday was as if I was never down the past few days then this afternoon I felt a bit grumpy.
81, I love your words of advice.

Glad you feel better. When I get down, usually with worry, I always seem to forget
that it will pass. I wish I could remember that at the time, because it is true.
I have found its ok to be down, to lay down, give up, cry, beg, pray ...
succumb
it's ok for me because it's a part of me and how I cope.
I think this may help me to live longer, not fighting it or worrying about it,
there is enough to worry about then how I react to worries.
Hope you have a great day today! Also, try not to worry or dwell on those things that are completely out of your control like financial markets, oil prices, etc., etc. Focus on you and those things that you can control or have sway over. And, be kind to yourself.
I watched "into the wild" for the oh lets say 15th time last night --- i dont know if it would help with being depressed but i think it helps with perspective and appreciation of the things we take for granted on a day to day basis
When I get depressed, I watch the first 45 minutes of Full Metal Jacket and then feel thankful that I never joined the Corp ... or maybe it's that I find Lee Ermey amusing.
On a serious note, runs and walks always help me when I'm in a funk. Getting some old Far Side books is medicine as well.
Thank you.
I feel down again, it is worse on weekends because I have more time to think I suppose.
During the working week I am distracted by work.
I am having a quiet dinner and drinks with a few friends tonight for my birthday. :?

I haven't seen this thread before. So sorry you've hit a rough patch. But there's lots of us who have been there and got through it, and I know you have had rough patches before and you made it through, you can do it again .
Don't give up your plans for a career change, you've wanted it for a long time now. Just take a pause. The weekends can be tough, keep busy with the little things, walk, get some fresh air, play guitar. Come on here and talk inane shit (this particularly helps me ). Try and make sure you eat healthy, cut out caffeine and stimulants. If you smoke don't try and cut that out, you don't need the hassle.
A few years back I went through a tough time and couldn't eat/sleep/do anything. It probably sounds daft, but even though I'd read them all before, I read the Harry Potter trilogy, one after the other. It was easy to read, but interesting enough to hold my attention, but most importantly it gave my mind a rest and time to heal a little from the way I'd been feeling.
Take care of yourself and if you need to chat pm me.
I found that when I was in a really bad place the only thing that helped me through was working and friends to keep me distracted. I had only a handful of friends growing up, not all at one time, spread out through the various cities we lived in. It would usually only be one friend per place but that's okay, I was a solitary type of person to begin with.

I hope things get better for you and that you are able to pull yourself out of this funk.
'This boats not safe
And we're drowning.'
Thank you.
My birthday is actually tomorrow, falls on a Sunday so thought I'd do something to celebrate it on a Saturday night.
P.S: Get out drink some beers and hit on some beautiful Australian girls. I'm sure you're going to feel better plus you may end up with a girlfriend.
