    Pen has been brutal...just brutal!
  • bbiggsbbiggs Posts: 6,950
As much as we've been critical of the pen (deservedly so), they did a great job tonight and allowed us to get a huge 1-0 win after getting blanked offensively for most of the game.  Big win right there!

When Hector gives you a 14-pitch 1-2-3 inning, better damn get the W and not waste that performance!  That was a huge win last night!

Big win last night, that was much needed. I'll be in town next weekend for the series with the Cardinals. Then two weeks later I'll be back for the Let's Play Two showing at the Metro followed by the Friday game against the Reds on the 29th. Can't wait!

Exactly.  I have this weird feeling that we're fine.....then I think of the 14 remaining games against the Birds and the Beer makers.  This one could go down to the last day of the season.  Good thing we're up by 4 in the loss column.

The Cubs were awful this weekend.  Only 3 runs in the entire series?  The team looked tired and lost.  Where is the "We never quit!" from last year?  Hopefully, the day off tomorrow brings back some of their energy.

I really don't understand some of Joe's decisions this today?
    - No Schwarber against a right?  Why have Avila PH in the 9th instead of Kyle?
    - Why replace Bryant at 3rd with La Stella and put KB in LF?  If you really wanted La Stella in the lineup, put him at 2B and play Happ in CF.  Happ has been playing the outfield consistently for the past couple months.  When was the last time KB played left?
  • Take out the 8-run game against the Buccos and we've scored 8 runs in the other 6 games combined last week. Pathetic.

Anyone else really dislike Tim McCarver? Jeeeez...

Don't even get me started on when he and Buck were doing games together.

What a weekend for our Cubs! 3-0 sweep over the Redbirds. Love it!
  • Cards are done! Now just need to get those pesky Brewers out of the way officially.

Had a great time at Wrigley yesterday and today. It was awesome being there while Ed was in attendance too. Our bullpen has been fantastic lately. Keep it up Cubs!!

Hoping we clinch tonight in St. Louis. The Cardinals are officially out of the division race, which is a nice bonus no matter what, but let's go ahead and close this thing out.
  • I agree. I heard Pham was all bitchy because Zobrist said they intend to clinch in STL. Ben iridemybicycleinuniformwithmykidonthebacktotheballpark Zobrist! Some dudes you just can't get mad at because they are good people. Sounds like Pham has a sore tush about not leading his team to a division title.

Yeah.  I mean, I get wanting to defend your turf and fire up your team and all that, but if the Cards were 6 games ahead and they were playing in Wrigley, I'm sure they'd want to clinch there, too.  Who in their right mind wouldn't want to clinch as soon as possible, regardless of what field the game is played?  I'm sure Zobrist would have said the same thing had we been playing at PNC or Great American or Petco or Yankee Stadium.  Pham took it to a personal level when he said "I hope he doesn't ask me how I'm doing, I don't want to be his friend now."   Get inside your head much, Tommy?

Heck yeah, the sooner the better.  Jake vs Martinez tonight.  We beat up on Carlos last time we faced him, but he's posted a 2.85 since then.  We need patience at the plate, get Martinez' pitch count up and then hit their bullpen. He can strike a lot of guys out and we're susceptible to swinging at every damn thing, so our guys need to work on him. I wonder if Jake has a pitch limit tonight?

NL Central Champs.  First step done.  Now we have some tough playoff games ahead of us.
Got to see us clinch in the new plaza outside of the Wrigley.
  • Oh how sweet it felt to clinch in that ballpark last night.  To see the dirty bird fans sulking, walking out of the park to the sound of "let's go Cubbies!"  It was almost as good as the SchwarBomb that iced the 2015 NLDS.

Yeah I shiver a bit thinking about how Daniel Murphy knocked us around with the Mets

I'll agree with that.  Murphy has had our number.  Don't underestimate the Dusty Baker factor here, though.  He's bound to blow at least one game due to just being stubborn.  The Nats don't exactly have a real scary bullpen, and the prospects of playing against a less than 100% Bryce Harper shift the series in our favor, I believe.  Whatever happens, its been a pretty fun year of baseball on the north side.  I could really get used to making the playoffs every year.
