I don't think you could dodge Tom Sawyer or Limelight without really trying.

Or Freewill, or The Spirit Of Radio, or Subdivisions, or Working Man, or Fly By Night, or Dreamline, or A Passage To Bangkok, or Closer To The Heart, or The Trees.

Wondered how long it would take for someone to tar us all as heathens because we don't like the beatles  I dislike them because they are boring to listen to, over hyped as geniuses and over idolised for allegedly changing the history of music.

Fine if you think they're boring, but they are both genius and the single most influential act on modern music pretty much since they started. When 9 out of 10 modern bands cite you as an influence 40 or 50 years later, whether they say it with their words or in their music, that's a feat worthy of the hype. Even with all the overhyping their still overlooked as musicians.
It's cool with me if people don't like the Beatles, especially if you've always heard that you've got to appreciate them. But as a kid who grew up in the 60s (and watched the Beatles on their Ed Sullivan appearances!), I can tell you that their impact on popular music was huge, in ways that are completely taken for granted nowadays:
They wrote their own songs. This was unheard of. Performers covered the works of professional songwriters who rarely sang or played their own music. They played their own instruments, which was equally unheard of. Most singers worked with studio musicians on their recordings and performed with back up bands. They popularized the guitar as the instrument of choice for aspiring musicians. I'm not sure how many boys would have received guitars for their 13th birthday if the Beatles hadn't come along. They completely altered the record industry by re-creating the lp. Young people bought singles, not albums. Until the mid 60s albums featured a lead off hit single and the rest of the songs were covers of the latest pop tunes. That changed with the double whammy of Rubber Soul and Revolver. They wrote songs on the standard fare of popular music--love songs, ballads, brokenhearted laments--but they also wrote about other concepts like social commentary and popular culture.
None of these things seem remarkable because now they are the norm that we expect from performers. I'm not sure all of them were for the better--for one, I think there are plenty of musicians who have no business writing their own material. But the Beatles created the template for how we now expect popular music to be made.

The Beatles didn't start out as innovative as they ultimately became. They took their musical style from American influences like Buddy Holly and Motown. They wrote their share of crappy songs. But there was something about those harmonies and catchy tunes that was pretty hard to resist. Music was ready for a change and they got the ball rolling.

That is it exactly. This force from others to like them with no exception. One of the most important bands in my life are Rush. But I am not blinkered or arrogant enough to rage when I hear or read people express their dislike.
But say that about the fucking beatles and we have the music control police on our backs which just makes me even less likely to ever listen to them.

I really don't get The Beatles. Just sounds dated and tired.

The Rolling Stones are better, but I still don't really dig them.

Led Zep and Pink Floyd, on the other hand... 8-)

I've never been able to get into either ZZ Top or Stevie Ray Vaughn. I understand they're very talented musicians (especially SRV) but the music has never done anything for me.
