but how does cutting down a size at restaurants only doing anything?

It isn't a step in any direction, much less the right one.

in better news, some restaurants that had some of the laws provisions in place are going ahead with the law on a voluntary basis. Maybe that will spark something for others.

The one positive thing about any action by Bloomberg is that the discussion around the issue is usually much better. He's an independent, not a democrat or republican. He's pretty socially liberal, and no one could doubt his credentials in the business world. With that description he almost sounds like a libertarian, but he's definitely not. I disagree with a lot of his policies, but I'm happy to see people actually debating the issue and not simply reaching for their party pom poms.

As for the soda issue, and any other issues about what people ingest, people should decide for themselves. If you do not own your own body, what do you actually own?

it's a start, it raises awareness, and welcomes better ideas. Maybe it will have a relatively small effect on its own, but maybe some more good thing will grow from the intentions.

ya ... but what about cigarettes ... it can be argued that because people are putting shit into their body - they are directly impacting me through health care costs, insurance premiums and what not ...

    How did this get ignored?
This is a big reason people do not eat healthy. I work in a grocery store and anything healthy cost double.....maybe manufactures should be legislated to stop price gouging?

The prices are that way if, let's say, you buy that salad or burger at Burger King (although why go to BK to get a salad?). You could prepare said salad at home for much less and probably end up with many more servings.

So, time and effort and convenience are a likely factor as well in the choices we make - or don't.

It just stands to reason that common sense (not to mention some other senses) would prevail when weighing the health options of a Big Mac - two greasy burgers, dressing, double cheese, triple bread, etc. - vs. a salad of lettuce, chicken, carrots, tomatoes, light dressing.

Why must it be pointed out? And even if it must be spotlighted, why should anyone dictate awareness (new buzzword I've taken a dislike to :P )? How can anyone NOT be aware of the nutritional disparities?

    What am I missing here?

You can't use horsemeat to make a salad cheaper.

Doesn't he even realize that people are just going to buy 2 drinks and doesn't he realize that this will create more trash ? Of course not.. Statist never think of unintended consequences.. :fp:

To add to this...yes it is my right to bitch about what people eat. Here in Toronto, they seem to have a news story once a month on how people on assistance can't afford to eat properly. Assistance means it is on my working tax dollar. Anyway, I go to the grocery store and get enough fruit for a weeks worth of salads and enough healthy food for lunches and I pay barely $40. But as I'm grabbing that fruit, I see the chocolate covered almonds for 3.99 for a bag. The chips for 3.49 a bag. Sure if you are buying garbage and thinking it is a healthy choice then you are from some other planet and should either get off assistance and get a job and buy your junk, so I don't have to hear the stories. Stop eating at McD's, the colonel, the king where every meal costs at least 20 and change to feed a your family. Pretty easy to make healthy choices for cheap.

I mentioned to a friend the otherd day....remember when you were young and your parents took you for a burger or out for a meal and it was a treat, not a life style.

I'm counting on awareness and education, not laws restricting personal choices.
I heard on our radio news yesterday water has now surpassed soda as the #1 beverage of choice.
    Far out!

ya ... but conversely, you can buy grocery store burgers and pay less as well ...

the reality is that bad food is cheaper ... mainly because it's filled with artificial crap ... the system does not make it easy to eat healthier ...

Let's be real...most of the reason these foods are cheaper is because they are subsidized by the government. The vast majority of the ingredients in processed foods, sodas and fast foods are derived from soy and corn by-products and therefore heavily subsidized by the federal government. Therefore, it only seems like it is cheap because it is not coming directly from your pocket when you shop at the grocery store. If you want people to make healthy choices then we need to make sure that everyone is aware of the actual ingredients in their food.

Seriously, check the label and see how many ingredients you don't recognize. Here's a short sample of typical ingredients in processed foods (including so called "health" foods) that are all made from corn by-products:

modified starch, glucose syrup. HFCS, maltodextrin, ascorbic acid, lactic acid, MSG, caramel color, xantham gum

Peanut butter is healthy? Think again - Jif Peanut Butter: MADE FROM ROASTED PEANUTS AND SUGAR, CONTAINS 2% OR LESS OF: MOLASSES, FULLY HYDROGENATED VEGETABLE OILS (RAPESEED AND SOYBEAN), MONO AND DIGLYCERIDES, SALT.

Most of these ingredients are GMO as well. Peanut butter should be made from peanuts, period. Everything else goes in to keep the oils from separating and as preservatives. These are unnecessary ingredients IMO.

When did it become acceptable to put this shit in our food? If I don't reconize it as food then I don't eat it.
Are we getting something out of this all-encompassing trip?

Seems my preconceptions are what should have been burned...

Yes I think they said bottled water on the news, maybe even flavored water,
    all water.

We used to drink only bottled water and bought filtered water but we drink tap now.
