I can hear something getting smaller and it ain't the waste lines of the obese (hint: it's their wallet)...god damn this is stupid.

I can't believe the cure for obesity was right there in front of our eyes this whole time...make people pay more for the same amount of soda...it is Genius!!! But I guess if you believe that gov't can solve every problem, why would obesity be any different. Glad I don't live in New York...where they charge you 15.00 for a pack of smokes and don't let you smoke them anywhere...

I love the guy who wouldn't vote for it because it doesn't do enough...jesus christ...he may want to do more, but at least he realizes this asinine measure is pointless.

    Fast Food Nation

We are a grossly unhealthy nation, and it sickens me that some people wear this as a badge of honor that shows off their "Americanism" or "Freedom" or "anti-government" stance. The sad reality is that there is a percentage of the population that would be wise to heed the advice of people like Bloomberg and Michelle Obama. That said, we can't force good health on individuals. So, let 'em die.

Don't get me wrong Im all for people eating well and exercising, but who is she or anybody for that matter to tell another person what they should or shouldn't to eat ? They think we as americans are too damn stupid to make our own decisions whether it be us or our children. Thats why I think she is a jerk.. Not to mention That her and her husband have been seen on many ocasions eating what some would consider un healthy. Its always the same with people like her that have power. They want us subjects to live how they dictate while they live another..

Question: If it is up to the parents to oversee what kids are eating... and there are a lot of obese children in America. Then, doesn't that mean the parents aren't overseeing what their kids are eating? Maybe, parents ARE too stupid to make their own decisions.
So, the next time someone taxes our healthcare system because they are unhealthy... we shouldn't complain because it is their free will to be obese. Or, should we just let them die?

I don't think it will help combat obesity with so much else available to keep people fat.

But I do support overall portion control. I would support regulations on calorie-to-size ratio on what you can consume.

I try to avoid fast food but ate at Arbys the other day. I got a "medium" size meal and they handed me a cup the size of a thermos. I forgot that today's "small" was yesterday's "large".

So true... I went to wendy's yesterday, and got a small chicken sandwich meal. The soda was like a standard 16oz cup. I'm guessing the large would be a 2 liter bottle?

  • I don't mind cracking down on school lunches. Those should be more nutritious than they are. Unfortunately for some kids, that will be the most complete meal that they have all day.

But I don't get this soda ban, it accomplishes nothing. If someone wants a lot of soda, they can get a refil... or buy two... On any street corner, you can buy cigarettes by the carton or 40oz of malt liquor, but you can't buy a 20oz soda...

    But, they have great influence.

What should we do about this?:
I was just at the grocery store and was in line behind two 20/30 something individuals who paid for their purchase with food stamps.

    Here is what they bought:
2 bags of Lay's potato chips
    2 2-liters of Coke
    1 2-liter of Sprite
A 64 oz (I guess) tub of ranch dip

As long as they have the essentials!!!!

if you really want to know my answer it will be the same as it is with most of these types of situations: stop worrying about the food someone else eats. It is certainly much easier than worrying about it. If someone doesn't care enough to change their life for the better, why should I?
More than that...someone might know what doing this will do to them and continue to do it because they like it... If that is what they want than so be it. Who am I to tell them how they should live? who am I to tell them differently? If this was the case, why should we stop at simply the container a soda can be sold in? that is such an arbitrary non-factor meant to get publicity

They bought the food with food stamps. That was the point I was trying to make; but, I will admit it was a bit off topic.

Bottom line: I think we should worry about what people eat when taxpayer money is sued, whether it be through food stamps or healthcare. If people want to continue to be unhealthy and eat garbage, then they should be required to pay for their own healthcare....like with a mandate or something :D

but how does cutting down a size at restaurants only doing anything?

It isn't a step in any direction, much less the right one.

in better news, some restaurants that had some of the laws provisions in place are going ahead with the law on a voluntary basis. Maybe that will spark something for others.

The one positive thing about any action by Bloomberg is that the discussion around the issue is usually much better. He's an independent, not a democrat or republican. He's pretty socially liberal, and no one could doubt his credentials in the business world. With that description he almost sounds like a libertarian, but he's definitely not. I disagree with a lot of his policies, but I'm happy to see people actually debating the issue and not simply reaching for their party pom poms.

As for the soda issue, and any other issues about what people ingest, people should decide for themselves. If you do not own your own body, what do you actually own?
