NYC Mayor Bloomberg On Soda Ban: ‘We’re Simply Forcing You To Understand’ What’s Better For You

New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg appeared on MSNBC on Thursday to explain portions of his controversial proposed ban on soft drinks in containers larger than 16 ounces. “We’re not taking away anybody’s right to do things, we’re simply forcing you to understand that you have to make the conscious decision to go from one cup to another cup,” Bloomberg told MSNBC.

RELATED: NY Mayor Bloomberg Follows Soda Ban With — National Donut Day?!

Bloomberg told MSNBC host Andrea Mitchell that his porposed ban would not limit the sale of soft drinks to individuals, but it would force many vendors to only sell small portions and force consumers to buy two small portions if they wanted more.

“The idea here is, you tend to eat all the food in the container in front of you,” said Bloomberg. “If it’s a bigger container, you eat more. If somebody put it in a smaller glass or plate or bowl in front of you, you would eat less.”

Bloomberg went on to cite the “epidemic” of obesity in America and said that his is a concrete proposal of what to do about this crisis. He stressed, however, that there would be no limits on the sale of beverages – just their portion size.

“We’re not taking away anybody’s right to do things, we’re simply forcing you to understand that you have to make the conscious decision to go from one cup to another cup,” said Bloomberg.

Oh really ? Sounds like it to me..

“It’s not perfect, it’s not the only answer, it’s not the only cause of people being overweight – but we’ve got to do something,” said Bloomberg. “We have an obligation to warn you when things are not good for your health.”

Bloomberg said that there are a variety of activities and substances that are curtailed for public safety. He said that it is illegal for people to enter a room with asbestos, for example. “In New York City, you can smoke,” said Bloomberg. He stressed that one could not do so where they could be endangering anyone that has to work in a given area.

Bloomberg concluded by saying that his administration was hoping to enforce responsibility on consumers. “I would just like to push that from the consumer point of view and force the consumer to hopefully move over to the less fattening drinks and everybody will be better off,” said Bloomberg.

UPDATE:Coca-Cola Refreshments has issued a statement relating to New York City’s anti-obesity initiative targeting soft drinks:

“The people of New York City are much smarter than the New York City Health Department believes. We are transparent with our consumers. They can see exactly how many calories are in every beverage we serve. We have prominently placed calorie counts on the front of our bottles and cans and in New York City, restaurants already post the calorie content of all their offerings and portion sizes — including soft drinks.
New Yorkers expect and deserve better than this. They can make their own choices about the beverages they purchase. We hope New Yorkers loudly voice their disapproval about this arbitrary mandate.”

I agree that people should think for themselves about issues like this. I think Bloomberg makes a good point here but does it in a way that won't work or help.

What does Michele Obama have to do with this and why do you feel the need to refer to her as "a jerk" and what on earth is she doing in your pantry?

Related to your link- the sad truth is that if government doesn't mandate healthier food for schools, kids will get fed crap. That's just the way it is, plain and simple. I don't see how Michele Obama wanting kids to get good nutrition makes her "a jerk". Surely you could hate someone for much worse things than that.

I think she has good intentions...Some kids have parents who dont care. She's trying to be a positive role model I suppose.

this falls into the ... do you legislate for ignorance!??

this is the crux of the problem ... rising health care costs ... costs that are imposed on tax payers ... if someone chooses to live an unhealthy lifestyle - they will likely become a burden to society ... i would say most people are ignorant of nutrition and diet and lifestyle choices ... people think eating salads is healthy meanwhile their salad is comprised of iceberg lettuce (low nutritional value) and load it with salad dressing (not good kind either) ...

I don't think it will help combat obesity with so much else available to keep people fat.

But I do support overall portion control. I would support regulations on calorie-to-size ratio on what you can consume.

I try to avoid fast food but ate at Arbys the other day. I got a "medium" size meal and they handed me a cup the size of a thermos. I forgot that today's "small" was yesterday's "large".

    Ha! Good point.

I think it's wonderful to be educated - to have the facts out there - and folks can choose for themselves, for better or worse. Big Daddy doesn't need to ban or control anything; it's not their place. Never has been and really should never be.

Question: If it is up to the parents to oversee what kids are eating... and there are a lot of obese children in America. Then, doesn't that mean the parents aren't overseeing what their kids are eating? Maybe, parents ARE too stupid to make their own decisions.
So, the next time someone taxes our healthcare system because they are unhealthy... we shouldn't complain because it is their free will to be obese. Or, should we just let them die?

Some people just like to eat...some people like to have a gallon of soda to go along with their bathtub of popcorn at the theater...some people understand it is unhealthy and don't stop...if they pay their premiums they should be taken care of...if they are on medicaid or medicare then MAYBE, as the payer of the bills, the gov't can create certain expectations. But this, like so many other well meaning things will not curb the obesity problem. Until they go all the way, this nickel and dime shit is stupid. Soda can no longer be sold in tubs bigger than 16 ozs...great...that did it, I am sure this will solve the problem. If they limit soda consumption to 16 ozs total per person they might make dent, but buying a 16 oz soda twice is no different than buying one 32oz soda except that it costs you more. Moderation is the key, and limiting portion size isn't going to stop someone from getting two, or three. A government that picks and chooses the vices it allows isn't interested in your health.

I get it. I understand that legislation does not always provide solution.
I was just questioning the rationale that it should be left up to the parents. Which, is has been. and what did we get? Obese children from obese parents. That the parents are a large contributor to the problem.
And if left for all to decide... we end up with obesity related health care issues that place a burden on everyone's health care. What then? They can pay for their own health care... but, if they don't... then, what? Take care of them on our dime or simply let them die?

So this all brings up a couple of bigger question: Hypothetically, if it were universally deemed that government should have no say in what people do with their lives- that is to say- eating tons of junk food, smoking four packs of cigarettes a day, driving a motorcycle without a helmet, or engaging in any other reckless and unhealthy behavior- and these activities lead certain people who do not have adequate health insurance to cover their care to require medical assistance in order to survive, what should be done, if anything for these people? And if mandating healthy or safe behavior is not something you support, what if anything would you do to encourage healthy and safe behavior?

well I suppose those who believe healthcare is a right, yes, we would take care of them on "our dime"...also, why are the choices pay for their healthcare or "let them die"...i am not letting them do anything...if they are slowly killing themselves, who is at fault when they die? I would argue they are...Might sound harsh to some, but if those are the only choices people have, these are the two answers....

And your example is why people don't like the idea of universal healthcare...because they believe that when the gov't pays for it they will regulate our behavior.

This will do nothing to "fight" obesity...it will inconvenience and cost the consumer money in a city that is
    expensive as hell.

What is next? because it won't stop here...so I ask you...what is next? limit beer cans to 7oz ....limit burgers to 1/8th lbs? limit the amount of cheese a human being can buy?...no thanks, I would like to think that local, state, and the federal gov'ts have larger fish to fry...oops...larger fish to grill

Maybe that is the solution. If someone gets obese from eating crap food all their lives and does not pay any health care insurance and they get sick... they should deal with the consequences.

I can hear something getting smaller and it ain't the waste lines of the obese (hint: it's their wallet)...god damn this is stupid.

I can't believe the cure for obesity was right there in front of our eyes this whole time...make people pay more for the same amount of soda...it is Genius!!! But I guess if you believe that gov't can solve every problem, why would obesity be any different. Glad I don't live in New York...where they charge you 15.00 for a pack of smokes and don't let you smoke them anywhere...

I love the guy who wouldn't vote for it because it doesn't do enough...jesus christ...he may want to do more, but at least he realizes this asinine measure is pointless.

    Fast Food Nation

We are a grossly unhealthy nation, and it sickens me that some people wear this as a badge of honor that shows off their "Americanism" or "Freedom" or "anti-government" stance. The sad reality is that there is a percentage of the population that would be wise to heed the advice of people like Bloomberg and Michelle Obama. That said, we can't force good health on individuals. So, let 'em die.

I was just at the grocery store and was in line behind two 20/30 something individuals who paid for their purchase with food stamps.

    Here is what they bought:
2 bags of Lay's potato chips
    2 2-liters of Coke
    1 2-liter of Sprite
A 64 oz (I guess) tub of ranch dip

As long as they have the essentials!!!!

The culture is a failure. And, celebrities that do commercials for McDonalds, soda, whatever, should be ashamed of themselves. But hey, they probably made a pretty penny for those commercials. $$$$ is GOD

the celebrities aren't on there saying to eat mcdonalds and drink soda until you get diabetes.

if you really want to know my answer it will be the same as it is with most of these types of situations: stop worrying about the food someone else eats. It is certainly much easier than worrying about it. If someone doesn't care enough to change their life for the better, why should I?
More than that...someone might know what doing this will do to them and continue to do it because they like it... If that is what they want than so be it. Who am I to tell them how they should live? who am I to tell them differently? If this was the case, why should we stop at simply the container a soda can be sold in? that is such an arbitrary non-factor meant to get publicity

They bought the food with food stamps. That was the point I was trying to make; but, I will admit it was a bit off topic.

Bottom line: I think we should worry about what people eat when taxpayer money is sued, whether it be through food stamps or healthcare. If people want to continue to be unhealthy and eat garbage, then they should be required to pay for their own healthcare....like with a mandate or something :D
