the roots are my hands down favorite of all time, no question... i like talib kweli... mos def is good... always been a fan of krs-one... a tribe called quest was great... beasties were great pioneers... nas is good... wu tang made some good records early on, i would have to say the gza stands out to me from that group... outkast was great... there is so little great hip-hop anymore that its hard to name much more that i enjoy at this point... if you're rapping about bentleys, packing 45's, how many times you've been shot or shot at someone, and slapping bitches than i'm not interested... for me there is a difference between story telling and weaving poems of inner city life, and glorifying, and there is a fine line between them... and to me jay-z clearly has glorified his misogynistic and materialistic attitudes and lifestyle...

with that being said, when i was younger i liked some other shitty hip-hop that i have totally grown out of, jay would would probabaly be a good example of that... i remember liking his 1st album.. and dont get me wrong, he has made some good songs over the years that arent all about bentleys and being rich and using women, but the overall theme he has woven over the years is pretty clear to me

to each his own, i'm just suprised PJ would headline the festival he curated. seems like an odd clash of artistic ideals to me?

Did you forget about the Beastie Boys song "Girls"

    to do the laundry,
    to clean up my room,
to do the dishes.......and so on.....

remember in the 80's you couldn't sing about bitches and gangsta's, they were called girls....but the Beasties meant the same thing Jay Z meant.

I can't believe people are so wound up that Pearl Jam are headlining with Jay-Z. Seriously, go outside and get some air. Its just a festival. Don't like it, don't go!

i'm not wound up... just having a discussion... one of the draws to PJ has always been their artistic ideals and respect for women... seems a little odd to join forces with the exact opposite at this point

god forbid anybody attempt to have an open discussion about pearl jam on their own message board

i'm sure you can go through any artists catalog and cherry pick unfavorable lyrics at some point, i'm sure thats why i was asked who i like so they can scour through and find some unfavorable lines in a song attempting to paint me as a hypocrite... but there is no question the theme throughout pretty much jay-z's entire career has been degrading women and materialism... and to compare the beasties to jay-z is taking that a TAD far, dont you think?

If we really want to talk about lyrics:

    Lyrics:
    Awooh...aye davanita...awooh...awooha...
    Jahooh...jahooh...
    Awooh...aye davanita...awooh...awooha...

    just sayin

A friend made me listen to the Gray Album since I'm a huge Beatles fan. It sounded like such a horrid defacement of Beatles songs. Just terrible. Too bad they sold their song rights to Michael Jackson.

Oh well, he got my cash anyway. Maybe I'll get something for that day's ticket?

I think Paul got them all back.

Some great stuff listed there. KRS, Wu-Tang.... Best from that genre ever IMO. I'd personally add N.W.A. though some of it is legit, Eazy WAS a Crip...

I listened to the same hip hop acts you mentioned and agree that Jay-Z is probably not as good as some were. The Roots in fact made a video about bad rap videos, so funny. Wu-Tang in some ways make Jay-Z look like a saint in my opinion.

But as you mentioned you grew out of a lot those hip hop acts that rapped about 40s, drugs, misogynist ones, which I think was most of them. And rock music, specifically musicicians were particularly misogynists with their treatment of groupies and also used drugs and alcohol.

But even hip hop at its worst is still artistic in some ways as it is a reflection of the community they lived, how they're are stores on every corner that sell 40s and drugs for like 3 dollars a pop or whatever, and the sometimes rampant disrespect for the ladies.

    It's just a different lifestyle.

I think it has shown over the past few years that PJ is now allowing themselves a little latitude and to have some fun. I think their fans should do the same.

this is really getting annoying. you of course picked two of his most basic, radio friendly, sleazy songs.

now read these (and he has plenty at this calibur) and then come talk to me.

    "Beach Chair"

    [Verse One]
Life is but a dream to me
    I don't wanna wake up
Thirty odd years without having my cake up
    So I'm about my paper
    24/7, 365, 366 in a leap year
I don't know why we here
    Since we gotta be here
Life is but a beach chair
    Went from having shabby clothes
    To crossing over Abbey Road
Hear my angels singing to me
    Are you happy HOV?
I just hope I'm hearing right
    Karma's got me fearing life
Colleek are you praying for me?
See I got demons in my past
I got daughters on the way
    If the prophecy's correct
Then the child should have to pay
For the sins of her father
    So I barter my tomorrows
    Against my yesterdays
In hopes that she'll be OK
And when I'm no longer here
To shade her face from the glare
I'll give her my share of Carol's Daughter
    and a new beach chair

    [Verse Two]
Life is but a dream to me
Gun shots sing to these other guys
but lullabies don't mean a thing to me
    I'm not afraid of dying
    I'm afraid of not trying
    Everyday hit every wave
    Like I'm Hawaiian
    I don't surf the net
No I never been on myspace
Too busy letting my voice vibrate
    Carving out my space
In this world of fly girls
Cutthroats & diamond cut ropes I twirls
Benzs round corners where the sun don't shine
I let the wheels give a glimpse of hope of one's grind
Some said HOV, how you get so fly?
I said from not being afraid to fall out the sky
    My physical's a shell
    So when I say farewell
My soul will find an even higher plane to dwell
    So fly you shall
    So have no fear
just know that life is but a beach chair

    [Verse Three]
    Life is but a dream
    Can't mimic my life
    I'm the thinnest cut slice
    Intercut, the winner's cup
With winters rough enough to interrupt life
That's why I'm both the saint & the sinner, nice
    This is Jay everyday
    No compromise
No compass comes with this life, just eyes
    So to map it out
    You must look inside
    Sure books can guide you
But your heart defines you, chica
Your corazon is what brought us home
In great shape like Heidi Klum
    Maricon, I am on
    Permanent Vaca
Life is but a beach chair
This song is like a Hallmark card
    Until you read each here
    So till she's here
    And she declared
    The aire
    I will prepare
A blueprint for you to print
A map for you to get back
    A guide for your eyes
And so you won't lose scent
I'll make a stink for you to think
I ink these verses full of prose
So you won't get conned out of 2 cent
My last will and testament I leave my heir
My share of Roc-AFella Records and a new beach chair

    "Dope Man"

    [Hook:]
They call me Dope Man, Dope Man
I try to tell em I'm where hope, floats man
    Ghetto spokes-man

A broke man, approachin the bench with intent
to bury me under the cell, fingered me as the toast man
    Evidence stemmin from ninety-six
They say the world ain't recovered from his fix
While they was usin cut I was on some other shit
Gave it to you raw and they just discovered it
Nowaday, the jury got they brow raised
Listenin to testimony about my foul ways
    Exhibit A: "Reasonable Doubt"
They say this was the first thing that turned the peoples out

    [MTV]
You can feel the tension building here
as an unprecedented number of people have turned out
for what may be the "Trial of the Century"
    [Hook]

    [Jay-Z]
How come, you label your brand of dope
"Volume 1" and spread it through the slums?
Fed it to the young with total disregard
Your honor, the State seeks the maximum charge
And how could you, turn right around
and release a lethal dosage called "Volume 2"
And is true you operate the criminal enterprise
known as Roc-a-Fella in charge of his meteoric rise?
And do you deny you're responsible for the demise
of record execs, and do you object?
Your distribution's Polygram, and through your connects
Def Jam, you pushed over five million SoundScan
And not to mention, your co-horts and henchmen
Dame, Biggs, Lyor, Kev' and Russell Simmons
And we ain't gon' talk about Murder, Inc.
That just establishes a darker deeper criminal link

    [MTV]
The State is seeking the maximum penalty
and with the overwhelming amount of evidence
the D.A.'s presented, things aren't looking good
    [Hook]
    [MTV]
Despite the grim outlook at this point
the rapper has been known to emerge triumphant
    in the face of adversity
    [Hook]
    [MTV]
    Jay-Z is taking the stand

    [Jay-Z]
Right hand on the Bible, left hand in the air
Before I spoke one word, made sure my throat was clear
    A-hem, I'm a prisoner of circumstance
Frail nigga, I couldn't much work with my hands
But my mind was strong, I grew where you hold your blacks up
Trap us, expect us not to pick gats up
Where you drop your cracks off by the Mack trucks
Destroy our dreams of lawyers and actors
    Keep us spiralin, goin backwards
At age nine, saw my first hate crime
Blindfolded, expected to walk a straight line
Mind molded, taught to love you and hate mine
Climbed over it, at a early age, Jay shined
Fuck the system at Lady Justice I blaze nine
Your Honor, I no longer kill my people, I raise mine
The soul of Mumia in this modern day time

and here's a little segment from the song, "Things That U Do" that describes why he raps how he does perfectly...

    I can't entertain it
    Sometimes I can't explain it
God given, gifts of a soul for hard living
Far be it from me to question Allah's wisdom
Could've been lost in the system
Instead I'm involved with the rhythm
I dodged prison, came out unscathed from car collisions
I know I must be part of some mission
Shit I used take it for granted
Why they placed me on this planet
I would ask myself while writin raps to myself
But right there under my nose
Was the flow of all flows
Not a demon but a rose, in the cement

now if you truly read all that you can see the man has crazy talent. rap involves some violence, flossing, and sleaze...it's a totally different culture and background from where pj came from. but it doesn't make it any worse. Jay has 100 flossy sleazy songs, 100 serious life learning songs, and like 100 violent street depiction songs...that's his life..its a mixed bag. you can't pick out two songs like that. he's a great lyricist and business man. i'm sure pj rightfully respects him as a representative of a different genre of music.

    Amazing. The man is terrific.

    "Beach Chair"

    [Verse One]
Life is but a dream to me
    I don't wanna wake up
Thirty odd years without having my cake up
    So I'm about my paper
    24/7, 365, 366 in a leap year
I don't know why we here
    Since we gotta be here
Life is but a beach chair
    Went from having shabby clothes
    To crossing over Abbey Road
Hear my angels singing to me
    Are you happy HOV?
I just hope I'm hearing right
    Karma's got me fearing life
Colleek are you praying for me?
See I got demons in my past
I got daughters on the way
    If the prophecy's correct
Then the child should have to pay
For the sins of her father
    So I barter my tomorrows
    Against my yesterdays
In hopes that she'll be OK
And when I'm no longer here
To shade her face from the glare
I'll give her my share of Carol's Daughter
    and a new beach chair

    [Verse Two]
Life is but a dream to me
Gun shots sing to these other guys
but lullabies don't mean a thing to me
    I'm not afraid of dying
    I'm afraid of not trying
    Everyday hit every wave
    Like I'm Hawaiian
    I don't surf the net
No I never been on myspace
Too busy letting my voice vibrate
    Carving out my space
In this world of fly girls
Cutthroats & diamond cut ropes I twirls
Benzs round corners where the sun don't shine
I let the wheels give a glimpse of hope of one's grind
Some said HOV, how you get so fly?
I said from not being afraid to fall out the sky
    My physical's a shell
    So when I say farewell
My soul will find an even higher plane to dwell
    So fly you shall
    So have no fear
just know that life is but a beach chair

    [Verse Three]
    Life is but a dream
    Can't mimic my life
    I'm the thinnest cut slice
    Intercut, the winner's cup
With winters rough enough to interrupt life
That's why I'm both the saint & the sinner, nice
    This is Jay everyday
    No compromise
No compass comes with this life, just eyes
    So to map it out
    You must look inside
    Sure books can guide you
But your heart defines you, chica
Your corazon is what brought us home
In great shape like Heidi Klum
    Maricon, I am on
    Permanent Vaca
Life is but a beach chair
This song is like a Hallmark card
    Until you read each here
    So till she's here
    And she declared
    The aire
    I will prepare
A blueprint for you to print
A map for you to get back
    A guide for your eyes
And so you won't lose scent
I'll make a stink for you to think
I ink these verses full of prose
So you won't get conned out of 2 cent
My last will and testament I leave my heir
My share of Roc-AFella Records and a new beach chair

    "Dope Man"

    [Hook:]
They call me Dope Man, Dope Man
I try to tell em I'm where hope, floats man
    Ghetto spokes-man

A broke man, approachin the bench with intent
to bury me under the cell, fingered me as the toast man
    Evidence stemmin from ninety-six
They say the world ain't recovered from his fix
While they was usin cut I was on some other shit
Gave it to you raw and they just discovered it
Nowaday, the jury got they brow raised
Listenin to testimony about my foul ways
    Exhibit A: "Reasonable Doubt"
They say this was the first thing that turned the peoples out

    [MTV]
You can feel the tension building here
as an unprecedented number of people have turned out
for what may be the "Trial of the Century"
    [Hook]

    [Jay-Z]
How come, you label your brand of dope
"Volume 1" and spread it through the slums?
Fed it to the young with total disregard
Your honor, the State seeks the maximum charge
And how could you, turn right around
and release a lethal dosage called "Volume 2"
And is true you operate the criminal enterprise
known as Roc-a-Fella in charge of his meteoric rise?
And do you deny you're responsible for the demise
of record execs, and do you object?
Your distribution's Polygram, and through your connects
Def Jam, you pushed over five million SoundScan
And not to mention, your co-horts and henchmen
Dame, Biggs, Lyor, Kev' and Russell Simmons
And we ain't gon' talk about Murder, Inc.
That just establishes a darker deeper criminal link

    [MTV]
The State is seeking the maximum penalty
and with the overwhelming amount of evidence
the D.A.'s presented, things aren't looking good
    [Hook]
    [MTV]
Despite the grim outlook at this point
the rapper has been known to emerge triumphant
    in the face of adversity
    [Hook]
    [MTV]
    Jay-Z is taking the stand

    [Jay-Z]
Right hand on the Bible, left hand in the air
Before I spoke one word, made sure my throat was clear
    A-hem, I'm a prisoner of circumstance
Frail nigga, I couldn't much work with my hands
But my mind was strong, I grew where you hold your blacks up
Trap us, expect us not to pick gats up
Where you drop your cracks off by the Mack trucks
Destroy our dreams of lawyers and actors
    Keep us spiralin, goin backwards
At age nine, saw my first hate crime
Blindfolded, expected to walk a straight line
Mind molded, taught to love you and hate mine
Climbed over it, at a early age, Jay shined
Fuck the system at Lady Justice I blaze nine
Your Honor, I no longer kill my people, I raise mine
The soul of Mumia in this modern day time

and here's a little segment from the song, "Things That U Do" that describes why he raps how he does perfectly...

    I can't entertain it
    Sometimes I can't explain it
God given, gifts of a soul for hard living
Far be it from me to question Allah's wisdom
Could've been lost in the system
Instead I'm involved with the rhythm
I dodged prison, came out unscathed from car collisions
I know I must be part of some mission
Shit I used take it for granted
Why they placed me on this planet
I would ask myself while writin raps to myself
But right there under my nose
Was the flow of all flows
Not a demon but a rose, in the cement

I enjoy a bunch of Jay-Z. I'm a big rap/hip hop fan, and although he isn't among my favourites, I can admit he's got a lot of good tracks. His black album is probably his best. And I love his collaboration with Linkin Park; I can listen to that album any time, and in any mood.

i'm not wound up... just having a discussion... one of the draws to PJ has always been their artistic ideals and respect for women... seems a little odd to join forces with the exact opposite at this point

god forbid anybody attempt to have an open discussion about pearl jam on their own message board

Except you are not discussing Pearl Jam. You're bitching about Jay-Z. Again. You don't like him or his music. We know. But PJ aren't holier than thou you know.

i know degrading women and bragging about being rich has become quite the norm and acceptable over the past 20 years... but not all of us blindly accept it as normal or acceptable

has jay -z made some good songs. absolutely. do i like some of his songs. absolutely. do i like the overall theme he has weaved for the last 15 years? nope. do i like any rapper that degardes women and raps about maybachs and rolls royces every other verse? absolutely not. do i prefer thought provoking, insightful, intelligent, and positive rappers and lyrics? absaolutely. is jay-z considered maybe the best rapper ever? he sure is. does that mean i have to suck his dick? nope. do i like the fact pearl jam, a champion of womens rights and humbleness, has decided to joine forces with jay-z? nope. does that matter in the least. nope. does that mean i should not have an opinion on it? not a chance

this is dedicated to everyones daughters, sisters, girlfriends, and wives... send them my way so i can "fuck em all day fuck em all night, make the bitch feel my dick, let my whole team hit it, then when the suns up i'm gone... cause we dont love these hoes" real classy shit right there

has jay -z made some good songs. absolutely. do i like some of his songs. absolutely. do i like the overall theme he has weaved for the last 15 years? nope. do i like any rapper that degardes women and raps about maybachs and rolls royces every other verse? absolutely not. do i prefer thought provoking, insightful, intelligent, and positive rappers and lyrics? absaolutely. is jay-z considered maybe the best rapper ever? he sure is. does that mean i have to suck his dick? nope. do i like the fact pearl jam, a champion of womens rights and humbleness, has decided to joine forces with jay-z? nope. does that matter in the least. nope. does that mean i should have an opinion on it? not a chance

this is dedicated to everyones daughters, sisters, girlfriends, and wives... send them my way so i can "fuck em all day fuck em all night, make the bitch feel my dick, let my whole team hit it, then when the suns up i'm gone... cause we dont love these hoes" real classy shit right there

I agree with my2hands. For pretty much all the reasons he stated. So Jay Z has toned his act a bit. So he raps about God and Allah now. Wonderful. I call that perpetuating ancient myths of savage misogynistic deities. Even when he's not rapping violent lyrics, he's still making offenses against the art of making music, like when he recently took a cheesy 80's song (Forever Young), rapped a few silly lines over it, and called it Young Forever. I call that low-grade hackery. And the whole festival is full of low grade pop music acts. It's all a bunch of bullshit, and the two other fests down South aren't much better.

DiRtyFrank38, you say when guys get together, they talk about women like that? Obviously you and your friends do. But I've never been friends with guys who talk about women like that, and I got plenty of male friends, dude. We certainly talk about women, but not like that. You think the guys and Pearl Jam really talk like that? I highly fucking doubt that. I have a much higher opinion of them than that, although my opinion of them has been lowered greatly by them doing this festival.

The "don't like it, then don't go" argument is pretty stale. Obviously, we don't have to go. I won't be going. A lot of you are happy about that, I'm sure. I'm not happy that the band I used to hold in such high esteem has progressively lowered the bar for themselves. The Yield/Binaural/Riot Act era was a high water mark for them. They blew away everyone else, and they displayed ethics you don't see in too many very popular bands. I'm glad I got to see them back then.

I guess some here will think I'm being the bitch that Jay Z raps about so often. I think I'm standing up for something better.

Some of those 2011 shows were really rippin though... so I'm not abandoning my love for this band, at least not yet, and I would still see them if they played their own show, but this really makes me question what they are thinking.

Spend a little bit of time listening to all the acts playing at this Made in America Festival... you can find them all on YouTube... I cannot believe how awful these acts are. I'm okay with Santigold, but the rest is just awful... Pearl Jam has generally played with really good acts... I didn't care for Death Cab for Cutie, but that was much better than what they're playing with now.

Kenny olav...you obviously have a strong opinion, but it seems pretty narrow and ignorant. to say that all the acts are garbage is ridiculous. Apparently you forgot to check out janelle monae who puts on as good a show as anyone who i can remember opening for pj in the past ten years. maybe you don't like it, but it's certainly not garbage.

the whole lyrical content discussion is a joke. don't pass judgement on someone unless you've walked in their shoes. i'm sure jay-z grew up in a completely different environment than you, and it's a culture which you'll probably never understand. that doesn't make you or your ideals any more superior which you seem to be implying.

so yes, it does come down to if you don't like it, don't go. it's clear that urban culture makes you uncomfortable.

Yeah, I do unleash my opinion rather strongly sometimes, and I kinda regret having done that, only because it's pointless. My standards are pretty high... I don't think that makes them narrow, or that they come from a place of ignorance or of being uncomfortable with urban culture... but I prefer music that challenges the mainstream. The festival seems to be riding right in the middle of it.

I did check out Janelle Monae... only one song... Tightrope... I actually didn't think it was bad. It wasn't particularly exciting to me, but totally respectable, unlike some of these other acts. Like Calvin Harris... that's something I'd expect to hear on a pop/hot 100 type station... but if it's being played on modern/alt rock radio, I wouldn't be surprised, because the quality of music has dropped there too.

My definition of quality is based on listening to a shit ton of music of all kinds, and musical taste is of course subjective. If people like these new acts, I am not trying to stop them. But I'd love to time travel back to 70's when even pop music was good. The trends in pop music today don't appeal to me at all.

I guess Pearl Jam is going pop on us. Backspacer isn't a bad record, but it's decisively less badass than any previous PJ album. Is it even badass at all? I guess not. Three Mountains is a very badass album. I'd prefer Pearl Jam be like that. Fuck me if I say something you don't wanna hear.

that's a badass feral cat! the dog in your avatar looks scared of a cat like that!

anyway, i sometimes don't agree with my opinions from the previous day. i wish i hadn't given a fuck about all this. i just think this is festival overload. the tours in the early 00's... those were the days. i'm not anti-festival, but one (good) festival per tour is enough, i think. but pearl jam should do whatever they want. i can't complain. they've given us so much. i just trying trying to agree with my2hands about the decision making that would lead them to playing a festival like this, but he probably wishes i hadnt gone ballistic in his thread. i dont know if i should take back anything i said, because i dont feel like re-reading it, but i do like Backspacer... i just prefer the edgier music they used to make.
