i apologize in advance for the profane thread title, but i thought it was a fitting start to this discussion, i hope the mods will allow me a little creative space on that one lol... lets talk about Pearl Jam agreeing to play a festival curated by the artist known as jay-z, who during his career has consistently degraded women, glorified guns and violence, bragged about his wealth, and constantly brags and raps about material possessions (bentleys, diamonds, champagne, you name it)
i am 33 years old, and have grown up in the hip-hop generation, and i happen to like hip-hop quite a bit. good hip-hop that is. i am familiar with jay-z and pretty much his entire catalog. he has a few songs i like, but he is definitely not the type of artist i would have assumed Pearl Jam would align themselves with, considering he has taken the exact opposite side of the spectrum of PJ on most artistic ideals they have held for 2 decades.
i know a lot of people wont, and dont, give a shit... but i know there are some people that actually still care about these things and i was hoping to foster a little conversation about their choice to sign on as headliner of jay-z's festival?
here is an example of jay-z the artist, on his 3rd studio album, Vol.2 hard Knock Life, which sold 5 million copies... the title of the song should be a pretty good indicator of whats to follow lyrically... this is the artist pearl Jam has aligned with and agreed to be co-headliner with on HIS festival... waddya think?
"Money, Cash, Hoes"

Alpine Valley Resort is etched in my brain!!!
"Big Pimpin"
You know I, thug 'em, fuck 'em, love 'em, leave 'em
Cause I don't fuckin' need 'em
Take 'em out the hood, keep 'em looking good
But I don't fuckin feed 'em
First time they fuss I'm breezing
Talking 'bout, "What's the reasons?"
I'm a pimp in every sense of the word, bitch
Better trust and believe 'em
In the cut where I keep 'em
'til I need a nutt, 'til I need to beat the guts
Then it's "beep beep" and I'm picking them up
Let 'em play with the dick in the truck
Many chicks wanna put Jigga's fists in cuffs
Divorce him and split his bucks
Just because you got good head, I'mma break bread
So you can be living it up?
Shit, I part with nothing, y'all be fronting
Me give my heart to a woman?
Not for nothing, never happen
I'll be forever macking
Heart cold as assassins, I got no passion
I got no patience
And I hate waiting
Ho get your ass in and let's ride
[Hook]
We doing: big pimpin, we spending cheese (Check 'em out now)
Big pimpin on B.L.A.D.'s
We doing big pimpin up in N.Y.C
It's just that Jigga Man, Pimp C, and B-U-N B
[Verse 2: Bun B]
Nigga it's the big Southern rap impresario
Coming straight up out the black barrio
Makes a mill' up off a sorry ho
Then sit back and peep my sce-nahr-i-o
Oops, my bad, that's my scenario
No I can't fuck a scary ho
Now every time, every place, everywhere we go
Hoes start pointing - they say, "There he go!"
Now these motherfuckers know we carry more heat than a little bit
We don't pull it out over little shit
And if you catch a lick when I spit, then it won't be a little hit
Go read a book you illiterate son of a bitch and step up your vocab
Don't be surprised if your ho stab out with me
And you see us coming down on your SLAB
Living ghetto-fabulous, so mad, you just can't take it
But nigga if you hating I
Then you wait while I get your bitch butt-naked. Just break it
You gotta pay like you weigh: wet with two pairs of clothes on
Now get yo' ass to the back as I'm flying to the track
Timbaland let me spit my prose on
Pump it up in the pro-zone
That's the track that we breaking these hoes on
Ain't the track that we flow's on
But when shit get hot, then the Glock start popping like ozone
We keep hoes crunk like Trigger-man
For real, it don't get no bigger man
Don't trip, let's flip, getting throwed on the flip
Getting blowed with the motherfuckin' Jigga Man, fool
[Hook]
[Verse 3: Pimp C]
Smoking out, pouring up, keeping lean up in my cup
All my car got leather and wood, in my hood we call it buck
Everybody wanna ball, holla at broads at the mall
If he up, watch him fall, nigga I can't fuck witch'all
If I wasn't rapping baby, I would still be riding Mercedes
Chroming, shining, sipping daily, no rest until whitey pay me
Uhhh, now what y'all know bout them Texas boys
Coming down in candied toys, smoking weed and talking noise
[Hook]
On the canopy, my stamina be, enough for Pamela Anderson Lee
MTV jam of the week
Made my money quick then back to the streets but
Still sitting on blades... sipping that ray
Standing on the corner of my block hustling
Still getting that cane
Half what I paid slipping right through customs
It'll sell by night its egg shell white
I got so many grams if the man find out
It will land me in jail for life
But I'm still big pimping, spending chesse
With B.U.N. B, Pimp C, and Timothy
We got bitches in the back of the truck, laughing it up
Jigga Man: that's what's
i agree with the op
f**k jay-z
i'm not a big rap/hip-hop fan
but i can tolerate them if they can sing as well
which jay-z cannot
"what a long, strange trip it's been"

i will read that when i get a chance, and i'm glad he may be seeing the light, but it certainly doesnt change the fact he sold 50 million records being a sexist and materialistic pig of an artist for almost 2 decades... and of course some of it still remains, like on his last album, "watch the throne" with kanye west, with a nice little ditty on the record titled "Thats my bitch"... or the fact that they mention owning and driving "maybachs" about 50 times on the album? among other nauseating materialistic lyrics on the album...
a great rapper, andre 3000 from outkast, once said in a song that seems fitting...
"Bill Gates, dont dangle diamonds in the face
of peasants when he Microsotfin' in the place"
did i mention he copyrighted the name of his daughter?

Some dudes are tools
To act like they don't exist on this planet is funny
It's like people who say Howard Stern makes woman look like skanks
Hello they are skanks
WORD! awesome!
the roots are my hands down favorite of all time, no question... i like talib kweli... mos def is good... always been a fan of krs-one... a tribe called quest was great... beasties were great pioneers... nas is good... wu tang made some good records early on, i would have to say the gza stands out to me from that group... outkast was great... there is so little great hip-hop anymore that its hard to name much more that i enjoy at this point... if you're rapping about bentleys, packing 45's, how many times you've been shot or shot at someone, and slapping bitches than i'm not interested... for me there is a difference between story telling and weaving poems of inner city life, and glorifying, and there is a fine line between them... and to me jay-z clearly has glorified his misogynistic and materialistic attitudes and lifestyle...
with that being said, when i was younger i liked some other shitty hip-hop that i have totally grown out of, jay would would probabaly be a good example of that... i remember liking his 1st album.. and dont get me wrong, he has made some good songs over the years that arent all about bentleys and being rich and using women, but the overall theme he has woven over the years is pretty clear to me
to each his own, i'm just suprised PJ would headline the festival he curated. seems like an odd clash of artistic ideals to me?
I can't believe people are so wound up that Pearl Jam are headlining with Jay-Z. Seriously, go outside and get some air. Its just a festival. Don't like it, don't go!
