People actually thought they would be touring the US before the album is released?
Why would people think this?
I've gotta agree, I just don't see why they'd do an East Coast or West Coast tour this year with no album to promote. A handful of festivals makes perfect sense from their point of view
2005 they had the avocado album written already and went out and played canada and south america and didn't play 1 new song, do you really think they would haul all their equipment to florida to play 1 or 2 shows?
I saw them play gone in 05-although it was written the night before.
If I were promoting a festival I would say one of the bigger bands in the US is only playing two shows as well. Especially the day tickets go on sale for full price!

 I don't see why they would do a Europe tour with no albulm to promote
Maybe they feel they didn't enough dates on last Euro tour, maybe they enjoy playing Europe but most likely, as someone else said, its down to money. As Metallica's manager admitted they brought forward their European tour this year by 12 months for money reasons.

Pearl Jam not touring the Northeast this year would be a surprise, new album or no new album. Their pattern has been to hit this region at least every other year for almost their entire career. I fully expect, assuming everyone is healthy, that pattern will continue in 2012.
I was reading a story about Delunafest, and noticed this interesting quote from the festival's booking manager:
"Pearl Jam is a band that doesn't do anything that they don't want to do," DeLuna Fest booking manager Gus Brandt said. "I think they're only doing two shows in America this year, so for DeLuna Fest to be one of them is a big deal."
Now this guy might not know what the hell he's talking about, but with Ed's injury and nothing else announced, or even rumored (except the 2nd of those shows, in ATL), so maybe he does. Against my better judgment, I was hoping that September might be some sort of mini-US tour.
Oh well. Very happy for everyone in FL/GA who are or may be getting some shows!
I bet he is wrong.. I bet he meant they are only playing 2 festivals this year.. there is NO WAY they take all their stuff across country to play 2 festivals... I bet they play Alpine again and work their way south during the month of Sept

I think you are right on this. The only time that trend stopped was between 2000 and 2003.

MONEY.
Well, yeah. Also to play the songs from the new album. They've always done that too... I just don't think their schedules for the year (especially now with Ed's injury and rescheduled solo tour) point towards any US tour (maybe a couple more festivals). Btw, I wonder if this summer's Euro tour means they won't go back to Europe during their album tour?

A fair point, presuming they tour the new album next year maybe they would hit Oz and USA. Maybe they would skip Europe for a year? Obviously I hope not!!

I think it's fair to say that they expected the album out by late summer/fall. I'm sure Ed's injury really is the main factor for the new album being pushed to sometime in 2013.
